ASSIGNOR TO KEMIWELD CONTAINER-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application iiled December 3, 1906. Serial No. 345,988.
To 1li/Z whfmt t muy concern.:
Beit known that I, Juuvis l. Ilfiunnon, o. citizen oi' the United States, end e. resident et Detroit, in the countyY of l/Vuyne und Stets of Michigan, have invented u new und useful Container-'Fu ol which the following is :i specification.
My invention lconsists in u container top formed from u. llut sheet of metal or iihrous materiel, und having u serios of smell plugs, nearly the whole eireumferenees of which are severed'from the body of the materiel.
It further consists in forming these plugs tapering, with their large end on the inside of the heed so that they muy he pushed ddwn into the container but cannot he pushed out except under great pressure.
It also consists in the novel method ol ormingjhc head with tapering holes which are closed by te. )oring plugs integrally connected to the holly ofthe head.
The object of my invention is to provide o. cheap and ellicient dre-ige or sifter top for containers und is attained by the vconstruetion illustrated in the accompanying drewings, in which Y Figure 1 is s lan of the heed or closure of a container. 1igs. 2 und 3 illustrate the method of punching the holes, on en enlerged seele. Fig. 4 is a (zentral cross section of the head on the line A--A of Fig. i. YFigs. 5 and 6 are end views of punches on greetiy enlarged seules. Fig. I is e pien View of another top.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
To produce dredge Aor sitter tops for conteiners at the lowest possible cost, it is necessary to eut down the labor and materiel to a minimum, and this is etteined when the entire head orelosure is formed et one stroke of the die ivhen but one sheet of material is e111-, ployed.
'e In the drawings, the top 1 is formed with s oove to receive the edge of the cylindrical ody 2 of the container, to which it is soldered, or crimped or cemented according to .the material employed. The srnail disks 3 re out free from the body of the top except at one point where it remains attached by means of tongues 4 whose widths should not be far from one twelfth of the circumference are met by disks tapering outwerdly, and
contents may be' These conditionsY tightly fitting the holes from which they are punched.
To construct this container top I form the puneh 5 considerably smaller than the hole in the die 6. When the hole is punched, the side toward the punch will be the diameter of the punch, while the side toward the die will here its diameter, the resulting disk 3 being tapering as shown in Fig. 2. In
practice, e gang of punches ere employed so that'. ail the-'disks 3 are formed with one stroke, and the punches have grooves 2' so es to avoid shearing the complete circumference, tile tongues 4 being left.
Follower punches 8 are mounted beiow the cutting punches 5 and hold thedsis 3 up to position et the end of the cutting stroke of the punches 5, and afterward press the several disks 3 into their openings es shown in Fig. 3, Figs. Zand 3 show lower und upper limits of theiis't'rokes. The plete 9 serves to hold the head while this thel punches at sst step is accomplished whereupon the followers 8 immediately drop down below the fece of the die, so as to permit the container Y top to be reinoied and another substituted.
The smell closures may be Vof any form desired, depending upon the punch and' die employcd, the heed 10 shown in Fig. 7 neeessif tutes` punches such es plugs l2. If the punehes were made to closel lit the dies, the disks 3 or plugs 12 would be' straight instead of tapering, and if the mate-v rial of the tepwere tinck, the result would be that the end toward the cutting punch would be e trifle the larger.
Hevin now explained my improvements, what I c sim es' my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
11, Fig. 8 to form the V IOO to which tapering, plugs are attached by means of narrow tongues, the taper of the plugs serving to permit them to be easily swungiuward but pre/Venting them from beH 1 In testinmny whereof 1 have signed this ing swuugoutwnrd.
