UNITE .1 CHARLES HEART. or
citizen o'f the United States, residing .at Alexandria, in the'county of'Madison and State ..5 of Indiana, have invented certain new4 and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal` Rims or -F ellies., of which the 'following is aspeciication.
This invention relates to vehicle wheels, and the telly Ilo particularly -to the construction of or rim of such wheels.
The objects of the invention are to provide affelly or rim, preferably constructed of sheet l .Y -1iietal, which -niaybe applied to wheels oli4 I5 usual construction, and over which a tire of the ordinary make may be applied with ease and facility. i
A further Objectis the provision of means for preventing` lateral lrnovement oi the tire 2O on t 1e periphery of the rir'n or felly, and also Ineans are provided for bracing the spokes within the telly and strengthening the felly itself, against collapse. A The constructionas hereinafter deiined 25 provides afelly which is eheap'in first cost and durable, and one which combines strengthv with lightness of material. The invention lconsists essentially in a hollow metallic telly comp-rising strengthening 30 webs which also act to steady and prevent displacement of the ends of the spokes of the wheel, and means in conjunction withvt-he tire of the wheel for ment of the tire.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one example ofthe physical embodiment of my invention. y
Figure l is a view showing a portion of the felly and fragments of spokes, the telly being' 40 broken away at the ond of one spoke for convenience of illustration, and also showing the band-'which covers the joint of the two ends vof the one piece folly. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectionalview of the lelly at a'spoke 45. end. Fig.' v.5 is a top plan view ol' the tire, showing a portion ofthe same broken away to'illiistrate the flat sides of the wires for prel'venting the lateral movement ol the tire, and another portion brokin away on a lower S0 plane 'to show the construction of the lf'elly where the adjacent ends are joined together. Fig. a is a fragmentary sectional View at the joint ol the felly illustrating how the end of y ery of the telly, one at either side of the eenthe joint band is held under the tire.

This space 8O between the -two flanges, ispartly iilled by the wi de rib or projecting ring 1:3orined centrally on' the exterior,periphery.,oapee-` ond, interior tube 14,-which 4is vpresent to reinforce and strengthen-the. ,tubular;ffelly'35 proper. The'interior' tube le.is als.o,approxi mately U-shaped in cross section', butlocated in reverse position to thefellyproper, 'and is provided with annular webs.; ,1-5 and ,1,6fl between which an annular channeli `is formed, 90 and into this channel thegthirnblesfof. the spokes project. Tllesegwebs serve not only' to strengthen the telly, .whenunder radial pressure, lint also brace; and steacly'the,e11ds of the spokes, as will be. readily understood. 95 As is the. ease with the tubular felly the intel rior tube islalso con-stri-ieted of one piece, and
as 'illustrated in` Fig. 3 a metallic block or piece 1 7 is'interposed between the ends of the side walls of thetubeand also the webs of YOO the tube, the block being located at the joint in the exterior ellytube.
As before stated the space. between the two llanges 12 and l2 of the outer tube partially occupied by thewide ring 13 on the 105 innertube, and as indieate d iii"l Fig. two channels or grooves arefori'nedinthe periph-l tral ring 13 and bounded -on their outer sidesby the ilanges 12- and 12.' "Wit-hin these channels I locate the rings 18 and 19. The channels provide a seat for the rings which are semicircular in cross section, havin their flat faces flush with the peripheryof t` ie exterior telly and the ring 13, of the interior tube. on the flat surfaces.
At the joint in the felly the two flanges 12 and 12' are out awajr to provide a seat for the .flat ends 21 of the joint band, and the ends 21 extend inwardly to a line with' the flanges 12 and 12', thus providing a smoothc'ontinuons joint.
surface on the 'peripliery'of the felly'at its The ` loosely in their channels or seats and are c'apableof turning therein, as for instance, if froirrany cause the`tire should tend to Shift or slide sidewise 'on the periphery of the felly, the movement would cause a rotative motion to beinipartedlto the rings, slight' ofiicourse, but sufficient to turnone ofthe corners or points or edges S4 or 19', to
present a sharp ledge tothe inner surface of the tire and prevent tlie'lateral movement, and the greater the pressnre.tlie stronger the i resistance which will be presented by the sharp edge of .the rings to the tire.
Frein the above description taken in con* nectioirwith the drawings it becomes 'obvio us that I have produced a Wheel felly which fulfils'all the. objects set forth as the purpose' of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as neur and desire to secure Letters Patent is:
1. The 'combination in a Whe-el and lWith the spokes1 thereof of a-holloiir metallic felly having openings therein to receive the spokes, annular channels in the periphery. of the felly and rines semi-circular in-cross section Seated in sai channels; and'a tire surrounding said felly and adapted .to be engagedby the edges of said rings.
2..' The combination in axwheel andv with the spokes thereof, ofja telly,- tubular .in cross section and provided with openings to re The tire of usual pattern is pressed its periphery, an inner shell haring a.- projecting ring located 11i said opening` rings two rings 1.8 and 1.9 it comparatively eeive said spokes, 'an inner tube lwithin the felly tube, said inner tubecoinprising means for bracing the ends of the spokes, substantially as described.V
3.V A felly comprising a tubular metallic annular shell, an inner shell, and annular webs formed in said inner shell.
4. A fellycomprising a tubular inetalliiI annular shell having a continuons` openingr in semkcirc' lar in cross section seated on the inner she 1, and a tire surrounding the tire and bearnig on said felly, projecting ring and rings se'inicircula-r-,in cross section, l'or the purpose set forth.-
5. A iellyeonnirising a tubular metallic 'annular shell, -an inner shell having annular Webs formed integral therewith, means for forminga jointon the outer shell, and a liller block located between the adjoining endsof the Walls ofjthe inner shell and the Webs thereof.
6'. The combination in a vijheel and with thespokes thereof, of al1 outer tubular inetallic shell having a continuous opening in its periphery, an inner shell having a ringT projecting through said opening but leasingrl a space at each side thereof, a ring, senii-eircularin erosssectioii' located inea-eh said space', and a tire surrounding ithe folly and adaptedto be engaged bysaidrings; the adjoini'nends of said outer tube or shell beingr turne back. upoirtheniselves and inelosed by a flanged joint piece, substantiall)v as de scribed.
' 7. The combination in a Wheel and with the spokes thereof,`of an outer metallic tnbn lar felljr shell, having openings therein to re oeive the spokes, an inner tubular shell provided With annular webs forming hraees l'or the endsof the spokes, and a tire snrroiniding said felly, substantially as described;
In testimony whereof I allix'nrv signature in presence of Vtwo Witnesses.
