Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HUNT, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in thc county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Calculators 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in calculators, and it has for its object the production of a device whereby a number can be readily ascertained.
``Wliile I have shown in the accompanying drawings and shall describe herein the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes may be made in the form, construction and combination of parts without departure from the nature thereof, as shown, described and claimed.

Like numerals of reference denote similar parts in the several figures.
Upon a suitable support of any desired form or size, I print preferably in vertical arrangement a series of columns of figures 2,
six of such Columns bein illustrated in the drawings, but more may e employed if desired. The figures in these columns are so arranged in the illustration shown that the device may be employed for ascertaining any number between one and sixty-three.
Below the double columns of figures 2, I place the letters 8, W. F. I-I. U. N. T, but as .Will be obvious from the following description of the operation of my device, any other letters of the alphabet may be employed, or numerals or symbols may be employed instead of letters.
Below the letters 3, I provide a series of figures 4, as shown, arranged in circular form, Through the support or back piece l, I provide a slot 5 on one side cf which I place a ssries of tens units 6, running from a cipher (0) to six (6), as shown in Fig. 2. At one side of the center of said back piece, I provide a hole 7 as shown in the same ligure. On the back piece 1 and suitably journaled thereon by a stud 8, I provide a revolving dial 9, having near its odge a series of perforations l() of su'llicient size to admit the point of a pencil or other device for the convenient rotation of the same. At one side of said dial, there is provided a recess 11 through which, as the dial is revolved, will be seen the series of figures 4 on the back piece successively. On the back of the dial 9, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, I arrange a series of figures 12, near the outer edge thereof; a series of figures 13 is so arranged on the back of the dial 9 at different distances with reference to the axis of the dial, so that in the revolution thereof each of said figures will a pear through said slot 5 and at its proper re ation with one of the group of figures 6. As the dial is rotated the series of figures 4 on the back ieee will, as stated, successively appear tlirough the orifice l1 in the dial, and on inverting the structure the series of figures 12 will successively appear through the hole 7 in such back piece, and one of the figures of the series of figures 13 will be seen through the slot 5 in the back piece. Suitable stops 14, l5 are provided in the back piece; these are preferably holes re istering with the holes l0 through the diaIl, so that a pencil point or other instrument employed for the rotation of the dial will drop into such slots when lone of the holes 10 comes opposite thereto or registers therewith, thereby temo'rlarily stopping the further rotation of the It will be obvious that the structure may be made of card board, thin wood, or even of light metal, as may be found most desirable in its manufacture, and the material employed forms no part of my invention, and I do not wish to be considered as being limited to the .use of any particular material. It will b e also understood from the operation of my device that other and various forms or arrangement of the figures may be employed, and the necessary slots or orices in the structure may be changed.
Having described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I will Inow point out the manner of its use, and how the same may be employed to ascertain what may be terr-ned a cencealed number, er any number between 1 and 63. When the successive rotations of the dial have been accomplished, the desired number can be ascertained in any one of three ways first, it is seen through the hole 11, in the face of the dial; second, through the hole 7 in the back of the support or back piece 1 third, through the slit 5 in the back of the support or back piece 1, on the left side of which is printed the tens numeral, the unit numeral being lseen through the slot. As an illustration, the person operating the device is told by another person that his-age being 45 years, he states that the same appears in the columns lettered F. Ii. N. T. The dial being now turned so that the arrow points to the stop 14, a pencil point is placed in the hole 10 of the dial opposite the etter F and the dial turned to the right, as indicated by the arrow under said letter, until it stops at 14. The pencil point is then put in the hole 10 opposite the mark under the letter I-I and the dial is .again turned to The encil is then placed in the h N, and the dial again turned to the right until stopped at 14. The pencil is then placed in the hole 10 opposite the letter T and turned to the left as indicated by the arrow, until'the pencil falls into and is stopped at 15, when the figure 45 will appear on the back piece 1 and can be read through such opening in the face of the dial.. Then by inverting the device the figure 45 is seenthrough the hole 7 on the back thereof and the figure 5 in the slot immediately at the side of the figure 4 printed on the back of the dial 9,' thus making the number 45.
I t will be understood that a fourth method of disclosing the figure sou ht may be employed by the making of a Sit inthe face of the dial, and having the tens units on the opening on the face vof the back iece and being seen through such slit. It wi l also be understood that instead of employing the six columns of figures, as 2, names, designs, or pictures' can be employed in lieu thereof; thus the six columns mi ht be constituted of given names instead. of gures.
While my device Vis particularly adapted for amusement purposes, it is obvious that it can also be utilized as an advertising device by the printing of suitable advertisingmatter thereon. It can be manufactured at a minimum of cost, which fact renders it of practical utility for either of said purposes.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a mechanical calculator the combination with a fixed supporting member having a series of columns of figures arranged thereon and designated by indicatin characters, a series o figures arranged adjacent said first named series, a perforation through said member, a slot therethrough and a series of tens numerals adjacent to said slot, of a movable member pivotally mounted on said first member, and provided with a slot through which the series of figures over which it is rotatably mounted may be read, and provided on its back with a series of figures which successively appear as it is moved through the opening on the back of said first named member, as set forth.
2. In a mechanical calculator, the combination with a fixed supporting member having a series of figures arranged upon its face and rear side, a movable member pivoted thereon and having a series of figures 4on its side adjacent to the fixed member on which it is mounted, openings through the fixed' member through which the numbers on the rear side of the movable member are exposed, and slots in the rotating member through which the figures on the front of the fixed member are exposed, as set forth.
3.
