LAWN-MOWER SHAFIPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed October 31, 1906. Serial No. 341,424.
T0 all whom it TJZ/CZ/y concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. CHENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lawn- Mower Sharpeners, which improvement is fully set forth and described in the follow ing specification, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lawnmower having my newly invented sharpening device attached thereto and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same taken on the line 22 of said Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 I have shown a detached view of the said sharpening device.
The chief object of my present invention is to provide a simple, ineXpensive and effect ive device that may be readily attached to and removed from lawn-mowers as now most I commonly constructed, whereby the knives of such mowers may be quickly trued-up and sharpened.
Referring to the annexed drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the fixed blade of a lawn-mower and 11 denotes the rotary knife adapted to co-act with said fixed blade to produce a shearing cut.
1212 denotes the traction wheels, 18 the handle and 14 the customary metallic bars by means of which the handle is secured to the frame-work of the mower.
The reference numeral 15 indicates a bar, preferably of wood, or the like light and cheap material, the lower face of said bar being coated with emery or other suitable abrading material 16 and said bar, when in service, is
so located that the said abrading face is inthe circular ath described by the rotating knives 11 and it will thus be understood that continued rotation of said knives, in contact with the abrading bar, will grind and polish the cutting edges of said knives until they are sufiiciently trued-up and sharpened.
In order to support the bar 15 in proper relation to the rotary knives, and so that the bar may yield slightly when in abrading contact with the knives, I have connected the said bar with the handle-supporting bars 14 by means of springs 17 and 18 one of which, as here shown is formed of righthand coils and the other of left-hand coils. One end of each spring is extended and threaded, as at 19 and is screwed into the bar 15.
When it is desired to use my described sharpening device the springs 1718 are slipped onto the handle-bars 14 as seen in Fig. l, and said springs are then rotated until the grinding surface 16, is moved into the path of the rotary knives 11, it being of course understood that either end of bar 15 may be adjusted independently of the other end so that said bar will bear with equal pressure throughout the entire length of the knives as the latter rotate.
. In order to prevent the springs from accidental separation from the bars 14 I place pins 20 between said bars and the coils of the springs, at the open sides of the coils; the said pins being simply inserted in holes in bar 15.
Having adjusted the abrading bar as described it is only necessary to run the lawnmower along the floor, either right side uppermost or bottom side uppermost, in order to quickly and effectually true up and sharpen the knives 1 1 or, if preferred, the mower may be turned bottom side up and the knives 11 revolved by hand. Tuis may be very conveniently done by inserting a wire in one of the customary oi l-holes in the traction wheels and then using the said wire as a handle by means of which to rotate the traction wheels and the connected knives 11. After sharpening the knives the bar 15 may be removed from the bars 14 and laid away for further and repeated use.
Having described my invention I cl aim 1. A sharpening device for the rotary knives of a lawn mower, the same comprising an abrading bar, and springs rotatably mounted on said bar for attachment to the handle bars of a lawn mower.
2. A sharpening device for the rotary knives of a lawn mower, the same comprising an abrading bar, springs rotatably mounted on said bar for attachment to the handle bars of a lawn mower, said springs being formed of right and left hand coils, and pins inserted in said abrading bar between the coils of the springs and said handle bars.
