ALOIS FLAD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed February l1, 1907. Serial No. 356,672.
To a/ZZ whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoIs FLAD, a subject I of the German Emperor, and a resident of i New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propellers, of which the following is a specification. l
The present invention pertains to a cornbination rudder and propeller and particularly to some improvements on the arrangements shown and described in a separate application filed by me the same date.
The object of this invention is to provide means that will enable the application of the combination rudder and propeller to large steam boats and the operation thereof by mechanical means.
In order to make my invention more clear, the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing' in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 shows the arrangement as applied to a boat,` Fig. 2 a vertical cross section through the device; F ig. 3 a plan view thereof partly in cross section, and Fig. 4 a rear view thereof.
l/Vith reference to the drawing, a denotes the sectional propeller shaft, Z) the outer section thereof that carries the propeller c and oZ is the universal joint between the two sections.
e, e denote semi-circular guides to be secured to the aft of the .boat above and below the propeller shaft. Mounted on the outer section Z1 of the propeller shaft is a block f securedly fitted in a sector slide g capable of a reciprocating movement in the guides e. y At the upper and lower surfaces of the slide g and at the inner edges 72 Zt thereof the same is provided with conical teeth to cog wheels i, i. These wheels are borne on sloping shafts y', of the boat into the latter and borne in brackets Zr, Zr. At their inner extremities these shafts carry also cog wheels Z, Z that mesh with wheels m, m arranged on a vertical shaft n.
o denotes the steering wheel from which movement is suitably transmitted to the wheels m, m, thence to the wheels Z, Z, Z, c', whereby the slide can be moved into either direction within its guides e, e swinging the propeller sideward to steer the boat in its course.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a boat, of a sectional propeller shaft, a universal joint between the sections thereof, a propeller carried by the outer section, semicircular guides secured to the aft of the boat, a sector slide capable of reciprocating in said guides, said slide being mountedon the outer section of the shaft and having conical teeth on its upper and lower surfaces, cog wheels meshing with said sector and mounted on sloping shafts projecting through and borne in the boat and means for transmitting movement to said cog wheels and sector slide to swing the propeller sideward, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' Signed at New York this 9 day of February, 1907.
ALOIS FLAD.
