Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed September 25, 1903. Serial No. 174,562.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISIDOR ALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 1111 rovement in Horns, of which the following escription, in connection with the accompanying drawings,
' is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to horns and has for its object to provide a collapsible horn, which, when colla sed will occupy a very small space and wil be readily carried in ones pocket.
In carrying out my invention I make the horn in sections which telescope one within the other.
In my preferred embodiment the sections of the horn are frusto-conical in shape and have a progressively varying size from one end of the horn to the other, so that when extended they make a horn having a general conical shape.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view'of the horn extended Fig. 2 shows a view of the horn collapsed; and Fig. 3 shows a box or carrying case into which the horn can be placed.
The sections of the horn are designated by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively, and in this form of the invention arefxusto-conical in shape and have a progressively varying diameter from one end of the horn to the other.
The exterior diameter of each section at its larger end is slightly greater than the interior diameter of the next larger section at its smaller end, so that each section is prevented from being pulled off from the larger end of the next smaller section. This is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the horn is partly broken out to show the end a of the section 6 fitting within and slightly larger than the end?) of the section ,7. Each section is of such a size and has such a taper that the next smaller section can be telescoped within it so that the entire horn may be closed together and all the sections contained within the larger section 9, as seen in Fig. 2. When thus collapsed the horn may be placed in a suitable carrying case 10 which may be only large enough to contain the section 9. The smaller section 2 is illustrated as having applied thereto the usual mouth piece 11 containing the reed 12. The mouth-piece may be detachably applied to the smallest section 2, so as to permit said section to telescope entirely within the next largest section 3, as shown in Fig. 2. The small end of the section 3 is provided with the recess, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, in which the mouth-piece 11 may be received when the horn is collapsed.
The horn may be made with any number of sections desired. When extended, as shown in Fig. 1, the various sections are held extended by their frictional engagement with .each other.
. be obvious that my invention is not limited to this'shape, but may also be embodied in horns having other shapes.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction therefor without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y A horn comprising a plurality of frustoconical sections of progressively varying size and ada ted to telescope one within the other, al of said sections being of the same length and the smallest section having applied thereto a mouth-piece provided with a reed, and the next to the smallest section having a pocket or recess in its smaller end to receive the mouth-piece when the tele scope is collapsed whereby when the sections are telescoped together all the sections are entirely received by the largest section.
