To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, HUGH L. JONES, a citizen of the United Statesof Alnerica, residing at Ione, in the county of Logan and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a light and inexpensive gate with means for opening and closing the same upon opposite sides of the gate.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the latch end of the gate vertically to permit small animals to pass under the gate, and to lock the gate in adjusted position.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation and partial. section of the pivoted end of the gate.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the upper rail of the gate, and 2 is the lower rail, said rails being secured at one end between two end uprights 3, and near the opposite ends said rails 1 and 2 are secured to uprights 4, and disposed between the same. Wire strands 5 are connected to the uprights 3 and 4 upon one side of the gate, said wire strands being secured by staples 6 at their opposite ends. Vertical wire strands 7 are secured to the rails 1 and 2 by means of staples 8. Secured between the uprights 3 and 4 are spacing blocks 9, and a strand of barbed wire 10 is stretched longitudinally of the gate and secured by staples 11 to the blocks 9, the ter minal ends of strand 10 being bent down, as at 12, and secured to the ends of the blocks or embedded within the same to hold the strand 1O firmly in place. A barbed wire strand 13 is similarly secured to the block 9 between the uprights 3 and 4 at the bottom of the gate, these barbed wire strands serving to prevent small animals from passing under the gate or larger ones from jumping over the gate. The uprights 3, 3, are pivotally connected at their lower ends upon a bolt 14 which passes through short hinge posts 15 secured in the ground, said bolt 14 passing through said posts and through spacing blocks 16, one at each side of the uprights 3, 3 and a central spacing block 17 provided with an oil hole 18 through which oil may be projected for oiling the bolt 14. The upper ends of the short posts 15 are provided with metallic hoods 19 to shed the water and protect the pivot bolt 1.4 from the weather. Posts 20 are located at opposite sides of the gate, and pivoted to the upper ends of said posts are levers 21-, said levers being setin mortises 22 in the upper ends of the posts 20,
and metal hoods or covers 23 are secured 'to the upper ends of said posts to protect the pivots 24 of said levers. Operating rods 25 are connected at one end to the levers 21 and at their opposite ends to rings 26 secured upon opposite sides of the top rail 1.
The latch end of the gate comprises the extensions 27 of the top rail 1 and the exten sion 28 of the bottom rail 2, said extensions being confined between the parallel posts 29 by means of a pin 30 which extends through a slot 31 in the rail 2 and through any one of a series of perforations 32 in the posts 29. Thus provision is made for adjusting the gate vertically at this end to permit small animals to pass under the gate.
The operation of my gate may be briefly described as follows: When it is desired to open the gate the pin 30 is removed and one of the levers 21 is drawn downward by means of an operating cord, not shown, and the gate is raised upon the bolt 14 as a pivotal point. When the gate is being closed the bottom rail 2 is guided between the posts 29 by means of the inwardly beveled ends 33 of said posts. Whenever it is desired to permit small animals or poultry to pass under the gate, the rail 2 is raised and the pin 30 is inserted through one of the apertures 32 and through the slot 31 in said rail to hold the gate up at that end and lock the same in adjusted position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is z 1. A gate comprising top and bottom rails, end uprights secured to said rails, longitudinal wire strands extending from one of said uprights to the other, vertical Wire strands extending from the top to the bottom rails, said top and bottom rails extending beyond the gate and the lower rail provided with a slot, in combination with parallel posts provided with a series of perforations, and a pin projecting through one of the perforations in said posts, and through the slot in said rail,
the bottorn rail being slotted and the posts being provided with a series of perforations,
and a pin extending through the perforations and slots, substantially as described.
