Description

JESSE w. VANIMAN, or wionrra, KANSAS.
STEAM-PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1901' Application fileiApril 17, 190.6- serial No. 312,191.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEssE W. VANIMAN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Steam-Flows; and I do declare the following to be afull,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which "it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to steam plows, and
. one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a strong and durable frame for a gang of plows, said frame adapted to lie close same. by hand whenthe traction engine ismoved backwardly. r
A still further object of the invention isto provide a caster-wheel, ada ted to be: operated by hand to guide the p ow-frame? when the engine is moving backward.
A further ob 'ect of my invention is to provide a steam plow-frame with an angular tube or bar for the attachment of anysnumber of lows required. 5 r
hese and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whijch,-.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a steam plow made inaccordance with my ,invention, and showing a portion of a traction engine to which the plow is attached; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the low detached from the traction engine; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the plow frame, and
showing the caster-wheel and mechanism for.
operating it. Fig.4 represents a side elevation of one of the tube supporting brackets.
- Referring to the drawlngs for a more particular description of my invention, the frame of the plow, consists of a metal platebent into substantially triangular or approxi mately V-shaped form and comprising the diagonally-extending portion, the laterallyextending portion 2, and the forwardly-extending portion 3 preferably of a length greater than the bar 1. Secured to the front ends of the framemembers 1 and 2, by means of bolts 4, is a combined water-tank and coalbin '11, said coal-binibeiug provided Witha the side of the tank 11, as shown in Fig; 1'.
ets
partition 12 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to separate the lower compartment 13, for containing water, from the upper compartment 14, for containing coal. The front endof this tank. and bin is cut away to provide means for gaining ready access to the coal for the furnace of the traction engine. The
plowis mounted upon front 'wheels 5, journaled to axles 6, said axles eing bolted to Secured to the frame are a series of brac 7, said brackets each having a tubular ortion for supporting a tube 8 which is disposed dia onally paralle with the frame member 1, sai tube having forwardly-extending, spaced lugs as 9, having their free ends bifurcated as at 9 between which plow standards not shown are adapted to be secured in any desirable manne A brace 10 is secured to the frame 1 by bolts 15, and extends forward, with itsfront end surrounding the tube '8, as shown in Fig. 1. Mounted in-the frame of the plow in rear of the tank 11 is a caster-wheel 16 and mechanism foroperating the same. The casterwheel 16 is journaled in a frame 17, upon the front end of which a lug 18 is formed, said lug being pivotally connected between flanges 19, 20, on the caster-Wheel frame. A flange 21 projects backward from the caster-wheel frame, and upon the upper side of said flange a ball-bearing raceway 22 is provided; for
antifriction balls 23, the balls being held around a drum 26, secured to a vertical shaft 27, upon the upper end of which a handwheel 28 is mounted for actuating the casterwheel and-directing the movement of the plow-frame when m nning backward.
The draftattachment comprises a laterallyextending bar 29, secured to the front of the 1 water tank support or frame of theplow, said bar being secured by brackets 30 "to said frame and by a bracket 40 to the tube 8; A
5 front end of the draw-head 3]. is secured by a pin 32- to .the bar 29 and is adapted to be adjusted laterally in any of the perforations 33 to secure a-'cen tral draft line under varying conditions. The draw-head 31 is connected to the tractionengine a. are connected to the traction engine by suitable means and extend backward, cross each other, and'are secured'at suitablep'oints to the latefially extending bar 29.
39 is connected at one end to the at its other'end to the 'mediate portion connected with the axle-6.
This draft appliancebar 29 and guiding the plow so that it will trail the ehne.- 5 r I Various changes in 'theiorm, proportion and theminor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principleforsacrificin any of the advanta -es of this invention, as fined by the appended claims. Y I Having thus described my invention, What 'I claim as new ters-Patent,-is,' H I a 1; A steam plow frame providedwith' a diagonally-disposed bar having In S extending laterally therefrom with their ree ends 'bi furcated to re'ceivethe plows and extended n i ll of the fr r 2. A steam plow composedof a diagonally Draft chains 34, 35,
A. bent bar tube 8' with its 'interpermits the traction enguief to turn- 1n elther direction freelv,
and desire to secure Let- I disposed bar having a short arm extending laterally therefrom, a bar extending at right an les from the free end of said arm, an an nular member secured tothe free end of the said bars/and a plow-carrying bar attached to said diagonal bar and extending parallel therewith. I 3' A steam plow frame comprising an approximately V-shaped member having one arm 'shorter than the other and inclined, an annular member mounted between the free ends of said \l-shaped member and secured thereto land' wheels connected with said an nular member, a caster wheel mounted in the reduced end 'of said spaced brackets secured to the short inclined nesses.
