ROBERT M. TOY, OF JONES STATION, PENNSYLVANIA.
METALLIC TIE AND RAIL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed January 9, 1907. Serial No. 351,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. ToY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jones Station, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Tieand Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to combined metallic ties and rail fasteners, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel tie or rail support particularly designed for a concrete bed or foundation.
My invention aims to provide a simple and inexpensive rail support, two of which I use to form a tie or its equivalent. The metallic tie or rail support is constructed to prevent the lateral or vertical displacement of rails, and to dispense with the renewing of an entire tie or sleeper, when one end thereof has been injured or broken.
The detail construction of my improved metallic tie and rail fastener will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of referencedesignate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rail support and fastener constituting one end of a tie or sleeper, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
In the accompanying drawing, I have simply illustrated one of the rail supports and fasteners constituting a tie or sleeper, it being apparent that in order to support two rails that form a track, it is necessary to use two of the rail supports and fasteners. In connection with the rail supports and fasteners, I preferably use a concrete bed or foundation, thereby increasing the efiiciency and duration of roadbeds and dispensing with the use of ballast commonly employed for retaining ties or sleepers in position:
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a portion of a concrete bed or foundation 1 in which is embedded the lower half of the rail support. The rail support embodies a base plate 2 of substantially the shape of a truncated rectangular pyramid, a central standard or column 3 and a rail chair 4. The chair 4 is formed at its one side with an integral fish bar or plate 5 having a central opening 6 in its web portion. The opposite side of the chair 4 is formed with pierced lugs 7 between which is pivotally mounted a fish bar or plate 8 of a less length than the fish bar or plate 5. The fish bar;8
has its web portion provided with an opening 9 and adapted to pass through said opening, and the opening 6, is a bolt 10 said bolt passing through the web of a rail 11 seated upon the chair 4. An ordinary nut 12 is then used to lock the rail 11 upon the chair and theffish bar 8 in engagement with said rail. This pyramidal form is designed to impart additional strength to the structure as a firm foundation for sustaining the entire weight of the rail, through the agency of the column 3 and by the chair 4, it being noted that the chair has no contact with or support from the concrete body 1.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it will be observed that the chair 4 is of sufficient length to form a solid seat for a rail and in this connection the parts of my invention may be slightly modified, whereby the confronting ends of two rails can be readily secured upon the chair 4 by simply providing the fish bars 5 and 8 with two sets of openings.
I do not care to confine myself to the material from which the rail support and fastener is made, or to its size and minor details of construction.
Such changes as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a rail support, and fastener, the combination with a concrete foundation, of a rectangular pyramidic shape base plate, a standard carried centrally thereof, a chair carried by said standard free from contact with said foundation and having an integral fish bar adapted to embrace one side of a rail, a fish bar pivotally mounted at the opposite side of said chair, and adapted to embrace the opposite side of a rail, and means to secure said fish bars to the web portion of a rail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses:
ROBERT M. TOY.
