Description

PATENTED MAY '7, 1907.
W POWELL SAWING MACHINE. rum-{non rnnn JUNE 9, 1906.
WILLIAM POWELL, OF HUME, ILLINOIS.
SAWlNG-IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented m 7, 1907.
Application filed June 9, 1906. Serial No- 320,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hume, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sawing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sawing machines, and more particularly to portable sawing machines for sawing timber, the object being to provide a machine which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which can be folded so that it can be readily carried when desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for adjusting the stroke of the saw and means for elevating the heel of the saw so as to suit different size logs.
This invention consists of the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification; Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine in operation. Fig. 2 is a side view of the machine folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
In the drawings A indicates a pair of perforated tubes forming sockets provided with feet A, in which the ends of an inverted U- shaped frame B, provided with perforated lower ends B, are adjustably secured by a pin A carried by a chain connected to the frame B, and adapted to pass through openings in the wall of the sockets and the perforations of the frame. The uprights of the frame are connected together by a brace B so as to prevent the same from spreading.
Mounted on one of the uprights of the frame is a shaft C provided with a crank handle D and a gear wheel E meshing with a gear-wheel F, mounted on a shaft G journaled in a block G, secured to the uprights and provided with a crank arm H having an apertured end to which the flattened apertured end of a tube I is pivotally connected, the walls of which are apertured adjacent its other end in which is adjustably secured the perforated end of a bar J, by a pin J, passing through the walls and perforations of the bar. The other end of the bar J is provided with an apertured curved end which is pivotally secured on a pin K between the spaced plates L carrying a saw M.
Hollow bars N, provided with flattened apertured ends are pivoted to the uprights of the frame B on bolts N so that they can be folded. The free ends of the bars are flattened and apertured through which spikes are adapted to be driven into the log being sawed so as to hold the machine in an upright position. Upwardly projecting perforated arms P are secured to the bars by bolts P provided with braces P connected to the bars by bolts. A pin O is adjustably mounted in the perforation of the arm P on which the apertured enlarged end R of the guide bar R is mounted, the lower end of guide arm being pivoted on the pin K between plates L so that the heel of the saw can be adjusted as desired.
The tubes are provided with arms S adj acent the ends connected together by a bolt S so as to brace the rods and prevent them from spreading.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a sawing machine, the combination with tubes provided with feet, of an inverted U-shaped frame adjustably mounted in said tubes, bars pivoted to the vertical members of said frame, provided with apertured ends, arms projecting upwardly from said bars, a guide arm adjustably mounted in said arms, a saw connected to said guide-arm and means carried by the frame for operating said saw.
2. In a sawing machine, the combination with perforated tubes rovided with feet, of an inverted U-shaped ifame mounted in said tube provided with perforated lower ends, pins extending through said perforated tube and ends, a shaft mounted on one of the vertical members of said frame, carrying a crank-handle and a gear, a crank shaft mounted in a block secured between said gear carrying a gear meshing with said gear, a tube connected to the end of the crank of the shaft, provided with apertures adjacent its free end, a bar having a perforated end adjustably mounted in said tube by a pin, a saw carried by said bar, bars pivotally mounted on the vertical member of said frame, provided with apertured ends adapted to be secured to the log being sawed, perforated arms projecting u wardly from said bars, a pin mounted in t e periphery of said arms, and a guide arm mounted on said pin connected to said saw for the pur ose described.
VTILLIAM POWELL.
