POLE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
)'atented May 7, 1907'.
Application filed March 10, 1906. I Serial No. 305,347.
To all 1.071101. it ntaq concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. NE soN, a 1 citizen of the United States, residing at Waseca, in the county of WVaseca and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pole-Qupports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pole supports and more particularly to poles used on binders, the object being to mount the pole on a wheel so that the weight of the pole will be taken off the horses.
Another object of my invention is to provide a spring actuated shaft carrying the wheel so that all side draft will be prevented.
Another object of my invention is to pivotally connect the end of the pole to the pole proper, so that it can be dropped when desired.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side View of the pole. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the pole partly broken away. Fig. .3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bearing blocks. Figs. 6 and '7 are perspective views of the securing plates. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the arm.
In carrying out my invention I employ a pole A, formed of two sections B and C, of different width, having plates B and O, secured to their sides by bolts B C and provided with outwardly eXtendingcurved apertured ends B C A block D, provided with spurs D, is arranged between the plates B, provided with a transverse opening adjacent the curved end which fits in the con caved face of a block E, provided with spurs E, and arranged between the plates C. The sections are connected together by a bolt F, which passes through the apertures in the end of the plates B and O and block D. A coupling member G, is secured to the other end of the pole B, by means of which. it is connected to the binder.
Plates H, provided with spaced openings H, and slots H are secured to the upper and lower side of the section B, by bolts I,
passing through the slots and opening to each side of the pole. Openings H are formed in one end of the plates H, through which the shaft J, extends which is bent as shown at J, to form an aXle on which a flanged wheel K, is secured by a nut K. The bottom plate H, rests on a collar L, secured to the shaft by a pin and a similar collar L, is secured on the axle. The upper end of the shaft J, is formed square and apertured as shown at J on which an arm M, provided with a square socket N is secured by a cotter-pin. Openings M M are formed in the ends of the arms in which the ends of the bowed rod N, is secured by nuts N. An. apertured lug O, is secured to the upper plate through which the rod passes and the rod is surrounded by a coil-spring P, between said lug and the end of the arm M, provided with the opening M having the tendency to shove the wheel to one side thereby overcoming side draft.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple pole support so constructed that the weight of the pole will be taken off the necks of the horses and one which will prevent side draft.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pole, of a shaft mounted on said pole carrying a wheel, an arm mounted on said shaft having a bowed rod secured thereto, and a coil-spring arranged on said rod, for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pole formed of two sections pivotally connected together, of plates secured to one of said sections provided with openings, a shaft arranged in said openings provided with a collar, a wheel carried by the lower end of said shaft, an arm mounted on the upper end of said shaft, an apertured lug formed on one of said plates, a bowed rod connected to the ends of said arm passing through said apertured lug and a coil-spring surrounding said bowed rod, for the purpose described.
3. A pole comprising two sections pivoted together, plates connected to one of the sections provided with openings, a shaft arranged in said openings, carrying a wheel, an
arm secured to the upper end of said shaft I a coiled spring surrounding said rod becarrying a bowed rod, and a spring arranged on said rod as set forth.
4. The combination with a pole, of a shaft carrying a wheel mounted on said pole, an arm secured on the end of said shaft, a lug arranged on said pole, a bowed rod passing through said lug connected to said arm and tween the lug and arm. for the purpose de- 10 scribed.
ALBERT J. NELSON.
