Be it known that l, AUGUST Boos, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Time-Stamps, of which the following a specification.
My present invention pertains to stamping devices, which, being properly operated, may impress upon suitable material a record of the particular year, month, day, hour and minute when the impression was made.
The object of my invention is to provide more reliable and more effective mechanism for the purpose referred to.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of parts of recording and impressing mechanism; parts of an inclosing case being removed. therefrom; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of a part of a crown ratchetwheel and ofa part of a minute wheel; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of an hour wheel; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of an hour wheel and of a spring detent and its support; Fig. 5 is an elevation of a detent; Fig. 6 is an elevation of parts of minute-recording mechanism; Fig. 7 is a perspective end elevation of inking mechanism, and of a stand in which said mechanism is mounted; Fig. 8 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of parts of impressing mechanism; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a check-holding slide; F 10 is a side elevation of a shaft, and of part of another shaft which carries a spur pinion; Fig. 11 is a top plan view of a blank check, and Fig. 12 is a similar view of a check bearing a time record.

Incloscd within a suitable case a, is a frame I), and mounted within said casing and frame is a clock movement which may comprise any mechanism suitable for the purpose, and is indicated herein, in a. general way, by the reference mark a. The main spindle (Z, of the clock movement 0, extends through the frame I), and mounted in axial alinen'icnt therewith is a separable spindle i, on the latter of which is rigidly mounted a drum 0, adapted to rotate therewith. A spring], hcrcin shown as'helical in form, is partially incloscd in the drum e, and its outer cud contacts a crown ratchet-wheel g, and
urges it into mesh with a similar ratchetwheel h, hcrcin termed a minute-wheel," which is of the same pitch and number of teeth, but is of greater diameter than the wheel 9. The latter is slidahle axially of and is rotated by the spindle i, and the teeth of the crown ratchet-wheel g, slidingly engage those of the minute-wheel 71, which latter is loosely mounted upon the same spindle. Rigidly secured upon and rotating with the separable spindle i, is a hub j, from which project one or more radial arms is; the arms be ing, preferably, equal in number to arms m, which connect the rim of the wheel h, to the hub thereof. Mounted upon each arm m, is a resilient member, herein shown as a spring n, which contacts an arm Zr, of the hub j, and may urge the wheel 71 to rotate in the direction in which the hub j, rotates. On the minute-wheel 71-, is fixed a rim 0, on the face of which are fixed minute-type which may respectively impress numbers from l to 59, both inclusive, and a double ci her, .00. On the intermediate plate 0 the frame 6, is mounted a reciprocatable detent p, which is engageable with the teeth of the minute-wheel h, and resilient means, herein shown as a spring g, urges the detent 27, into engagement as aforesaid. On the detent p, is formed a lug 1*, which contacts the outer edge of the rim of, the Wheel g. It should be noted that the direction of rotation of the spindles (Z, i, and consequently of the drum 6,
spring f, and wheel 9, is clockwise.
In a standard 8, which is fixed to the frame Z), is fixed a stud it, upon which is rotatably mount-ed an hour-wheel u, on the rim of which are mounted twelve hour-type, each of which is adaptcd to make an impression of a numeral which represents one of the twelve hours. On one face of the wheel a, is secured a disk having recesses v, adapted in form,'di mensions and relative positions, to operate, as hereinafter related, in combination with a spring-detent w: the free end ofsaid spring-detent being adapted in form and dimensions to coact with the recessed parts. The time-sta1np mechanism thus described may be operated as follows: The main spindle d, may be rotated by the'clock movement 0, which maybe operated by any suitable power, a spring-urged drum 20, to which is lxed a spur-gear wheel 21, which meshes with a spur-pinion which is fixed upon the main spindle (1, being shown herein for the purpose mentioned. With the spindle (I, may be rotated the drum e, the spring f, and also the ratchet-wheel g; the rate of rotation being adjusted so that the wheel g, will make one complete revolution in each' hour, and will therefore rotate to the angular distance of six degrees, or of one tooth of the ratchetwheel, in each minute. The spring q, will cause the reciprocatable detent p, to engage a tooth of the wheel 72,, and thus prevent the latter from being rotated by the wheel 9. Consequently the rotation of the wheel g, by reason ofthe movement of its ratchet-teeth upon the ratchet-teeth of the wheel h, will be caused to move axially of the spindle d, and against the pressure of the spring and in :said axial movement will, by means of the lug r, move the detent in the same direction, and thus disengage t e latter from the wheel it. It is not necessary that the wheel g, should have the exact number of teeth shown and hereinbefore mentioned, as three or more teeth, which should be evenly distributed on the side of the wheel, will answer the purpose uite as well. as sixty. The check 9, which has received certam impressions as before related, may now be placed in the slide 6, which may have been slid outwardly of the ways 1] in order to receive the check 9; the latter being retained in position in the former by means of the clamps 10, 10. The slide 6, may then be slid inwardly of the stand 12, during which move-- ment the bevel faces 17, of the slide 6, will engage the bevel cleats 16, and thus force the ink pad 13, downwardly, in which position the slide 6, will maintain said ink pad for the time being. The check 9, being properly positioned under the stamps x, and n, and 1, to 5, inclusively, the hand lever 7, may be depressed, and thus, by means of the impression pad 8, press the checkQ, against said type, and the latter will thus be caused to impress upon the check 9, the letters 0 C; the time, in hours and minutes; the name of a day of the week; the name of a month, and the ordinal of a day of a month. -When the check has been impressed as before described, the handle 7, may be raised, and the impression pad 8, will thus be withdrawn from its impressing position, while the check 9, will be withdrawn by the strippers 18, from contact with the impressing faces.
I claim as new and as my invention,
1. In a recording mechanism, the combination of a clock movement which operates a main spindle; said main spindle; a springurged crown ratchet-wheel which is slidable axially of and is rotatable by the main spindle; a separable spindle which is mounted in alinement with and is rotatable by the main spindle; a minute ratchet-wheel which is loosely mounted upon the separable spindle and the teeth of which are slidingly engageable by those of the crown. ratchet-wheel; minute-type which are fixed upon the minute-wheel a radially-armed hub which is rigidly mounted upon the separable spindle; at least one resilient member which is mounted upon the radially-armed hub and urges the minute-wheel rotatably and a detent which is engageable with a tooth of the minute-wheel and is disengageable from said tooth by an axial movement of the crown ratchet-wheel.
2. In a recording mechanism, the combi nation of a clock movement which operates a main spindle; said main spindle; a springurged crown ratchet-wheel which is slidable axially of and is rotatable by the main spindle; a separable spindle which is mounted in alinement with and is rotatable by the main spindle; a minute ratchet-wheel which is loosely mounted upon the separable spindle and the teeth of which are slidingly engageable by those of the crown ratchet-wheel; minute-type which are fixed upon the minute-wheel; a radially-armed hub which is rigidly mounted upon the separable spindle; at least one resilient member which is mounted upon the radially-armedhub and urges the minute-wheel rotatably; a detent which is engageable with. a tooth of the minute-wheel and is disengageable from said tooth by an axial movement of the-crownratchet-wheel and resilient means which are arranged to urge the detent into engagement with a tooth of the minute-wheel.

In a recording mechanism, the combination of a separate spindle; a crown ratchet-wheel a minute ratchet-wheel which is loosely mounted upon the separable spindle and the teeth of which are slidingly engageable by those of the crown ratchetwheel; minute-type which are fixed upon the minute-wheel; an hour-wheel; hour-type which are mounted on the hour-wheel; and removable type which are arranged to impress on a plane with impressions of the minute-type and hour-type.

In a recording mechanism, the combination of a separate spindle; a crown ratchetwheel; a minute-ratchet-wheel which is loosely mounted upon the separable spindle and the teeth of which are slidingly engageable by those of the crown ratchetwheel,' minute-type which are fixed upon the minute-wheel; an hour-wheel; hour-type which are mounted on the hour-wheel; removable type which are arranged to impress on a plane with impressions of the minute-type and hour-type; an impression device which is arranged to press impression-receptive ma terial against the minute-type, hour-type and removable type; a stand in which the impression device is slidably mounted; and an inking pad which is reciprocatively mounted in said stand and is contactible with the minute-type, the hour-type and the removable type.

In a recording mechanism, the combination of a separate spindle; a crown ratchet- IOC wheel; a minute ratchet-wheel which is loosely mounted upon the separable spindle and the teeth of which are slidingly engageable by those of the crown ratchet-wheel; minute-type which are fixed upon the min- Lite-wheel; an hour-wheel; hour-type which are mounted on the hour-wheel; removable type which are arranged to impress on a plane with impressions of the minute-type and hour-type; an impression device which is arranged to pressimpression-receptive material against the minute-type, hour-type and removable type; a stand in which the impression device is slidably mounted 3 an inking-pad which is reciprocatively mounted. in said stand and is contactible with the minutetype, the hour-type and the removable type; and means which are attached to the inking pad and t0 the impression device by which the inking-pad may be withdrawn from the type.
