To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AR'IHUR MooRE, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at -War Eagle, in the county of Mingo and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to revolving car dumps and especiallyto that class of dumps wherein one or more cars are rotated entirely over and the contents permitted to drop therefrom.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in my 'revolvmg car dump which forms the subject matter of an application filed in the United States Patent Oflice on the 23rd. day of November, 1904 and bearing Serial No. 234,058.
It has been found that in operation the pressure exerting fluidwithin the cylinders exerting a clamping pressure upon the sides of the car, flows from one side to the other when the dump is rotated and under the pressure of the car thereby permitting the dis lacement of the car.
t is a further object of this invention to provide valves to retain the pressure exerting fluid within each of the several cylinders and prevent the flow from one cylinder to another.
It is a further object of this invention to provide means for exerting a greater and more reliable clamping pressure upon the sides of the car, and for locking the clamping member in operative osition by a compressed air actuated loc ing device.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes inthe form, proportion, size and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved car dump showing the friction clutch device in operative position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of a fluid operated locking dog, hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a detail view in end elevation of the toggle joint and the cylinder and piston for operating the same, and, Fig. 5 is a detail end view of a friction clutch, hereinafter described. 4

In its preferred embodiment, my improved carduinp consists, as shown, of a platform 61 lnclosed within a plurality of circular memhere 62- and 63 and journaled to rotate upon a shaft extending longitudinally throughout the 'dump or consisting of gudgeons rigidly secured to the ends of platform 61 and forming an axis for the circular members 62 and 63; Uponthe platform 61 are mounted railway tracks 65 upon which may be placed a car, as shown. The shaft or gudgeons 64 are mounted to rotate as in journals 67 and the dump is strengthened by a framework and braces placed therein. Within the dump are mounted beams 68 having secured thereto piston-rods 68 connecting with pistons mounted to reciprocate within cylinders 69 to exert a clamping pressure upon the top of the car, the beam 68 being capable of assuming the position 68 for such purpose: Longitudinally of the dump and adjacent to the sides of the carare disposed beams 70 capable of lateral movement. Toggle joints 71 are pivotally secured to any convenient rigid portion of the dump structure as at 72 with their ends pivotally secured to beams 70. One end 'of a piston rod 73 is pivotally secured to the hinge of the toggle j oin't and the other end of said piston-rod is connected to a piston mounted to reciprocate within cylinders 75.
A system of pipes 76 is provided adapted to admit a fluid under pressure to the several cylinders to exert a clamping pressure upon the top and both sides of a car simultaneously. A second system of pipes 77 is provided and disposed to admit the pressure exerting fluid to the opposite ends of the several cylinders for the pur v ose of releasing the pressure and returning t 1e beams 68 and 70 to their normal position. Within the system of pipes 76 are located .valves 78 operated by levers 79 to prevent the escape of pressure exerting fluid from the cylinder and more especially to prevent the flow of fluid from a cylinder upon one side of the car to a corresponding cylinder upon the opposite side of t e car.
A pinion S0 is mounted to rotate externally of but adjacent to one or more of the circular members 62 and is, provided with gear-cogs adapted to engage similar gear--cogs arranged in a circular series about one or more of the circular members. Rigidly secured to a shaft 81 upon which )inion 80 is mounted is secured a lm-nd-\vheel 82 adapted to receive and operate in conjunction with a band brake of the ordinary construction to be placed thereonj shaft 81 is a friction-band 83 adapted to rotate in unison with the pinion 80 and bandwheel 8'2. The friction-band 83 is so con strueted as to permit a friction-wheel 84 to be disposed. within but eccentric to the said friction-hand. A second friction wheel 85 is disposed without the friction-lutml 83 and both of said friction-wheels 8-1 and 85 adapted to be positively driven as by a chain 86 passing over and engaging sprockets 87 rigidly secured to the shafts upon which the 'lrietioii-\\ lieels 84 and 85 are mounted and rotated. The friction- wheels 84 and 85 together with the sprocket-wheels 87 are mounted upon a plate 88, so that normally neither friction-clutch 84 nor 85 contacts with the friction-band 83, but are capable of being simultaneously moved along plate 88 so that either of said friction-wheels maybe brought in contact with said friction band but not both. The movement of the said friction- wheels 84 and 85 along plate 88 may be controlled in any desired In anner as by a lever 89 pivoted at 90 to the plate 88 and engaging the slidable bearings '91 in which the shafts rotate and upon which the frictionwheels are mounted. The piston-rods 68 are extended through the lower ends of the cylinders 69, see Fig. 3, and are toothed as at 2 0. The free ends of the piston-rods move in guides 221. A looking pawl 222 is adapted to be forced into engagement with the teeth of the iston-rod 68 whenair is admitted to a cylinder 223 simultaneously with the admission of air to cylinders 69 to thereby lock piston-rods 68 in their retracted positions. Air supply pipes 77 provides means for admitting air under pressure to the front ends of the cylinders 2'23 when it is desired to force the locking dogs out of engagement with the teeth 220 to ermit the beams 68 to release the cars.
he operation of my invention is as follows: -With the several features of my present invention mounted upon my revolving dump shown and described in my application No. 234,058, a car 66 will be placed upon the tracks and a fluid under pressure admitted to cylinders 69 and 75. The pressure of the fluid upon the pistons within said cylinders will cause the beam 68 to assume a position 68 and forcibly clamp the top of the car. levers 79 thereby retaining the fluid within the cylinders and preventing the flow of liquid from one side of the car to the other, thus preventing the lateral displacement of the car. The dump is held in position by the band-brake shown in Fig. 2 or by band- The brakes holding the dump are now released and the dump rotated by pinion 8O positively operated through the medium of friction-band 83 and friction wheels 84 and 85. When the contents of the car have been dumped, the dump may be accurately placed for the receipt of the next car by rotating it in either direction necessary by the manipulation oflever 89 thereby throwing either friction-wheel 84 or into contact with friction-band 83 and rotating said band and pinion 80 in either direction as desired. When fluid under pressure is admitted to the cylinders for the purpose of causing the clamping beams to be actuated, fluid under pressure is also admitted to cylinder 223 to cause the locking dog or pawl to be forced into engagement with the notched lowerend of the piston rods 68, as has been hereinbefore set forth, to lock the clamping beams 8 in their operative position 8. The parts will retain this position until fluid under pressure is ad mitted to the front end of cylinder 223 to withdraw the pawl from engagement with the notched or toothed portions of rods 68.
While I have shown and described the valves 78 as being operated by levers 79, it
is obvious that they may be operated in any desired manner.
While I have shown and described a friction-clutch which is well adapted for use in connection with my revolving car dump, it is 1 of the car sinulltaneously. The valves 78 are now closed by a manipulation of the 4 obvious that any other friction clutch adapted to reverse motion may be substituted therefor if desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a dumping'a paratus the combination with arotative ump of com ressed air actuated clamping members ad clamp a car upon said dump, and compressed air actuated locking members adapted to lock said clamping members in their operative position.
2. The combination with a dump ada tedto turn a car entirely over, of corn ressed air actuated clamping members a apted to clamp a car to said dump, and compressed air actuated locking members adapted to lock said clamping members in their operative position.
3. lhe combination with a rotative dump of movable beams adapted to clamp a car to said dump, piston rods connected to said beams, teeth formed upon the ends of said apted to piston rods, and a locking pawl ordog adapted to engage said teeth.

5. The combination with a rotative dump comprising a platform, of vertically movable beams adapted to engage the tops of cars and clamp the same upon each side of said platform, and horizontally movable beams adapted to clam the sides of said cars, toggle oints located between said side beams and fixed points upon the dump, compressed air actuated piston rods adapted to impart movement to said toggle joints, vertically movable piston rods connected to the vertically movable beams, teeth formed upon said last named iston rods, and a lockingpawl or dog adapted to engage said teeth. v
6. The combination with a rotative dump comprising a platform, of vertically movable beams adapted to clamp the tops of cars and clamp a car upon each side of said platform, horizontally movable .beams adapted to engage the sides of said cars, toggle links adapted to actuate said 'side beams, fluid pressure actuated piston rods adapted to impart motion to said toggle links, vertically movable fluid pressure actuated piston rods engaging the vertically movable beams, teeth formed upon said piston rods, and a fluid pressure actuated pawl or dog adapted to engage said teeth.
7. In a dumpin ap aratus the combination with a moval ole ump of fluid pressure actuated means for holdin a car upon said dump and a positive latchmg device en'gaging an element of said means for maintaining the latter in operative position.
8. In a dumping ap aratus, the combination with a movable ump of fluid pressure actuated means for holding a car upon said dump and a fluid pressure actuated positive latching device engaging an element of said means for maintaining the latter in operative position.
