Description
PATENTED MAY 7, 1907:
J. J. FRANK. TRANSFORMER CORE. APPLICATION FILED AUG.14, 1906.
INVENTUR Usrrnn it JOHN J. FRANK, OF SCHENECTA Y,
ELECTRIC COMPANY,
I No. 852,712..
A. CORP Specification of Letters Patent.
ASSIGNCR TO G lhERAL ii NEVF YORK.
Patented may 7, 1907.
Application tiled August 14,1906. Serial No. 330,562.
1'10 atM-w/wm it mmy concern:
Be it known that l, JouN FRANK, a citiare placed, and end-pieces joining the ends of t legs and mtcr-leavcd therewith. it
has been customary heretofore to form the end-pieces of rectangular cross--seotion.-- that is, with all the laminations of equal width. With this construction i have found that there is a tendenc for the core to bend. along the line formed by the inner edge of the end-pieces.
The purpose of my invention is to avoid this bending tendency, and my invention consists in forming the end-pieces oi laminae tions of diilerent widths. With this construction, there is no one line on which the core tends to bend, as in the construction heretofore employed.
My invention will best be und rstood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation, partly in cross-section, of a transformer arranged in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 shows a plan View oi the same; and Fig. 3 shows a perspective view oi a portion of the core.
I have illustrated my invention in the drawings applied to a transformer oi the type described in Patent No. 815,729, issued to S. liioody, March 20, 1906. in this type ol" tiai'ishii'irie'i', the legs supporting the coils are fO'l'li'iOd ct laminations of diil'crent widths, so as to approximate the circular form and enable the coil to lit the core closely. My invention is particularly advantageous as applied to this type of transformer, and i have censor uently selected. this type for illustration, hut it will he understood that in. its broader aspects my invention is not limited to this particular type, but is applicable to any transformer having a lan'iinated mag btates, residing at Schcu- :ly, State of Nev.
uetic core comprising parallel legs joined by end-pieces.
in the drawings, A represent the parallel l gs of the core on which are mounted the primary and secondary coils B and C. The parallel legs are joined at both ends by endpieces it, the ends ol which are interleaved with the ends of the members A A. ihcse end-pieces, instead of being formed ol laminations ot the same width as in the construction of Patent No. 815,729, above rci'erred to, are lormed of laininations of diilerent widths; the inner iaminations being wider than the outer laminutions. s'l'ith. this construction it will be readil seen that there is no one line about which the core may tend to bend, as Q1516 case when the laminations are all of the same width. Selecting the central animations of the end-pieces as the wider laminations, and making the outer laminabetter cooling surface than would be the ii the outer laminations were'the wider. l'Vhat i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is, 1. in a transformer, a laminated closed magnetic core comprising parallel legs and cnd-pieces oining the ends of said logs, the laminations composing said end-pieces being cl d iil'erent widths.
9 v a transformer, a lan'iinated closed A. is,
niz'gnotie core comprising parallel and end-pieces joining the ends of said legs, the mcr ianiii'iations oi said endpieces being of eatei' .wi ltli than the outer laminations.
b. in a transformer, a laminated closed magnetic core comprising parallel legs and end-pieces having their ends inter-leaved with the ends of said legs, tire laminations composing said end-pieces h ing of different widths.
i. in a transformer, a laminated closed magnetic core comprising parallel legs and endpieccs having their ends inter leavcd with the ends of said legs, the inner laminations of said end pieces being ol greater width than the outer laminations.
5. In a transformer, a laminated closed magnetic core con'i 'irising parallel legs and end-pieces joining the ends of said legs, the laininations cr. mposing both said end-pieces and said being of dill'eront widths.
a transformer, a laminated closed ions narrow, has the advantage of obtaining.
, nmgnetic core comprising parallel legs and tiens of both said end-pieces and said legs 10 end-pieces p ning the ends or said legs, the being or greaterwidth than the outer laminainner lannnutrons of both said encl-p1eees trons.
and said legs being of greater width than In witness whereof, I have hereunto set the outer laminatiens. I my hand this 1 1th day ofAugust, 1906.
7. In a transformer, a laminated closed JOHN J. FRANK. mgnetie core comprising parallel legs and Witnesses: end-pieces having their ends interleaved BENJAMIN B. HULL,
with the ends of said less, the inner lnminui GRACE M. HAN-IGAN.
