To all 'LU/LO'IIL it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RooKwooD COMFORT BISHOP, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, in the Colony of New Zea] and, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Gas-Heated Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of boilers which are heated by the surplus heat or waste gases emitted by the gas burners of gas cooking ranges of hot plates and the like.
By my invention the boiler is made to accommodate the usual burners in such a manner that the boiler is more readily heated without reducing the efhci'ency of the burners for ordinary purposes than is possible so far as I am aware with the boilers at present in use. I dispense with burners underneath the boiler which is heated by burners placed ab ove, in recesses formed in the top of the boiler. The heat from the burners is utilized for heating the boiler simultaneously with the heating of a vesselplaced above the burner in the upper part of the boiler. The recesses in the top of the boiler have channels for the necks of the burners. The heat radiating in every direction except upwardly from the burners is ab sorbed by the boiler and utilized for heating the water. A water cistern has flow and return pipes communieating with the boiler, and a draw oii' cock is provided. Channels for the escape of waste products of combustion connect the several recesses and channels for burners and other channels convey the said products to the atmosphere.
The drawings herewith illustrate the in vention as applied to an ordinary gas cooking range.
A skilled workman will be able from the following description to apply the invention to hot plates and similar devices.
Figure 1 is a plan of the top of the range with the water cistern removed. Fig. 2 is a plan of the boiler and its fittings. Fig. 3 a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a plan of under side of boiler, Fig. 5 a plan of the oven top, Fig. 6 a front elevation of boiler and cistern, Fig. 7 an elevation partly in section on line AA, Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation on line BB, Fig. 2. Fig. 9 is an elevation on a larger scale of the grill burner.
Referring to the drawings,the boiler 1 boiler to receive the necks 7 of the burners.
These channels are slightly inclined clownward toward the side of the boiler so that in the event of liquid boiling over the edge of a cooking utensil the rim 5 prevents the said liquid flowing to the oven top and the sloping channels convey the liquid to a gutter 6 formed along the side of the boiler. Channels 8 connect together the recesses, and channels 8 form a communication between the said recesses 2 and the channels 6 or with the atmosphere. These channels 8 and 8 allow the waste products of combustion to escape from the recesses 2 in the event of a cooking utensil entirely covering any of the recesses.
A recess 9 see Fig. 4, in the boiler provides room for a grill burner 10, and a grid 11 under which the grill pan is placed in the ordinary manner. A perforated pipe forming the grill burner 10 is divided longitudinally, and is provided with a partition 10 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 7.
A gas iet 1O supplies gas above the partition, and another jet 10 supplies gas below the partition. By employing both jets simultaneously grilling may be effected. below the burner at the same time that the heating of a vessel is carried on above the burner, or the jets may be used'independently for either purpose.
A cistern 14 for storing hot water is connected to the boiler 1 by flow and return pipes 12 and 13 respectively. The said cistern rests preferably upon an extension 17 of the range top 17 the said extension being supported by brackets 18 fixed to the range or the cistern may be placed in any other convenient position.
Where a high pressure water supply is available an ordinary water supply pipe may be provided with an ordinary float and cock to regulate the supply of water.
The under side of the range top 17 has lugs 20, and the top of the boiler has lugs 20 which are secured to the lugs 20 by bolts 20 see Fig. 1. The top of the oven, see Fig. 5, is provided with ribs 21 wliereon the boiler 1 rests, and the under side of the boiler has lugs 22, see Fig. 4, which fit within the said ribs to keep the boiler in position, a small space 23,

see Fig. 5, being left to allow air to pass under theboiler to the openings 4:.
An opening 24, see Fig. 5, is formed in the top of the oven through which the products I with channels leading from the recesses and sloping downwardly to the side of the boiler and provided with a gutter into which the channels discharge and provided with channels for the escape of the waste products of combustion, and burners placed within the recesses, substantially as set forth.
2. Apparatus for the purpose indicated comprising in combination with a gas cooking range, a boiler having recesses and provided with openings for admission of air to the recesses and provided with channels leading from the recesses and sloping downwardly to the side of the boiler and provided with a gutter into which the channels dis charge and provided with. channels for the escape of waste products of combustion, burners placed within the recesses, lugs upon the upper side of the boiler, ribs upon the top of the range corresponding to the lugs on the boiler, bolts securing the top of the range to the boiler, lugs upon the under side of the boiler, ribs on the top of the oven and adapt ed to receive the lugs on the under side of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
3. Apparatus for the purpose indicated, comprising in combination a boiler adapted to rest upon the top of a range and having recesses and provided with openings for admission of air to the recesses and provided with channels leading from the recesses and sloping downwardly to the side of the boiler and provided with a gutter into which the channels discharge and provided with channels for the escape of the waste products of combustion, burners placed within the re-. cesses, an extension to the top of the range, brackets supporting-the extension, a water cistern resting upon the extension, flanges around the bottom of the cistern, ribs formed upon the extension and fitting within the flanges of the cistern, flow and return pipes connecting the cistern and boiler, substantially as set forth.
4. In apparatus for the purpose indicated, a burner for grilling and heating cooking vessels, comprising a perforated tube a grid fitted to the burner, a horizontal partition di- -viding the tube longitudinally into two divisions, a gas jet for supplying gas to the upper division, and another gas et for su plying gas to the lower division substantia ly as set forth.
