EARLE C. BACON/0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 85,266, ZaftetLiDe/cembcfr 29. 1868.
IMPROVEMENT n'v PITMAN.
.To cliwhomgit may concern Y Beit known that l, Eliane C. Balox, of the city, county, and State ofNew York, have invented a new and useful ,l mprovementin the Tightening of theearing-Brasses to Pitman and Ooimeeting-Rods, &c.; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereiuatti-n' referred to, forms a full and exact specification ofthe same, wherein I have set forth thc nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to mc by Letters jatent.
'lhc principal object ofthe present inveution'is to enable the two'sets of bearing-blnsses of pitman and commeting-rods, 85e., which arc loca-ted at or near each end thereof, to be tightened about their respective journals, bearings, or shafts. by means et' one gib and key, lor one set of wedges, ordinarily employed for such purpose, thus dispensingr with a gib and key, and a strap .at one end of the pitman-rod, &o.; and for this purpose, c '.lhe invention consists in extending through the pitnian-rod, from the gib and key to the bearing-brasses, at the` apposite end of the pitu'ian-rod to that at which the sa-id gib and key and strap are located, a rod, and in so combining such rod with said bearing-brasses, and the key and gib, that thereby, when the key is driven, not only will the bearing-brasses at one end, through the strap, be tightened about their journal-bearing or shaft, as .udinarily, but also the bearing-brasses at the other end about their journal, &tc., as is obvious. ln the accompanying plate of drawings my invention is illustrated,
Figure l being a side and exterior view of a pitmau or conuecting-rod from end to end, and
Figure 2, a central longitudinal section, taken in the pla-ne ofthe line :1' x, l.
A,A in the drawings, represents a pitlnan ou connecting-rod, and B, astrap placed. around one end of the same.
ln this strap B, one setof the ordinary bearingbrasses C is placed, and there confined -in the usual Illilrllllkl.
D, n gib, and E, akey, both arranged in the strap B,- aud passing from one side to the other of the same,
' as ordinarily, so that by driving the key in or out, the
brnsses C will be tightened or loosened, as the case may be, about their journal-bearing or shaft, the said key and gib acting through the strap B thereon, in
F, a rod, extending from gib l) through the pitinanrod A, that is made hollow tllerefor, to a setof bearing-brasses, H,tl1at are located at the opposite end, l, of the pit-lnanlrod .X to that having the strap B encircling it.
VVit-h a rod, F, extended from a gib and key to a set of bearing-lirasses, as above described, it is plainly obvious that as such key is driven in or out, said bearing-brasses will be consequently tightened or loosened, as the case may be, about their ,journal-bearing or shaft, such key at the saine time acting through the strap to tighten or loosen the set of bearing-brasses carried by it about their ljournal, 85e.
peused with, und consequently the necessary iitting up ofthe saine-an advantage of Iuueh importance. Y
To preventthe end of the rod F from cutting into the surface M oi' the bearing-brass whereon it acts, a steel or other suitable plate, N, is interposed between the t-wo.
Although I have herein particularly described the ,rod F, for tightening one set of brasses, as operated by the gib D and key E, which I think the most desirable and practicable for obvious reasons, still I do the. fact that the two sets of brasses are tightened by one andthe saule gib and key, that is, simultaneously, but I deem such arrangement and construction preferable.
Having thus described my improvement, I shall state my claims, as follows:
l.` The rod F, or its equivalent, in combination with ne., when the rod F, or its equivalents, is arranged within the pitlnan o1' connecting-rod, 85e., for operation upon one set of the beariug-brasses thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described. A
2. The rod F, or its equivalent, in combination with the bearing-brassess to a pitrnan and connecting-rod, 85C., and a gib, key, and strap, or their respective equiva-lents, when all arranged together for operation, sub stantially as and for the-purpose described.
3. The plate N, interposed between bearing-Masses and rod F, substantially as described, for the purpose specih'ed.

the ordinary manner.
By my invention, a gib, a key, and a strap are dis` not wish to limit myself to any one particular mode. of ibrcing the rod, nor do l. intend to limit myself to.
the bearing-brasse, to a'pitman and connecting-rod,
