Be it known that I, JESSE Gr. RosnBooM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to Sash frames and sashes; and it contemplates the provision of simple, e'l'licient and durable means for counterbalancing a sash and at the same time preventing the passage of air between the side Stiles of the sash frame and the sash.
The invention also contemplates the provision in a sash, of means whereby panes of glass of various thicknesses may be expeditiously and easily fixed in the sash.
Vfith the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understoodfrom the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a broken, sectional perspective view illustrating my im rovements in connection with portions o' a sash and a side stile of the sash frame. Fig. 12 is a horizontal section taken in a plane above the sheave `employed in the im rovedconstruction.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, etail section showing my novel means for fixing a pane of glass in a sash adapted to receive a thicker pane of glass.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is a side stile of a sash frame which is preferably made of sheet-metal in the form best shown in Fig. 2-that is, with a hollow portion a and a groove or guideway l) in the inner wall of said hollow portion. Mounted in suitable bearings on the inner wall of the stile and at the proper height is a sheave B the oflice of which will hereinafter be pointed out.
O is a vertically slidable Sash, the frame of which is preferably of sheet-metal. This sash is provided in the outer edge of its side bar c with a vertical groove or channel d; and it is also provided at its upper end -with a horizontal arm D which overhangs the groove-or channel d for an important purpose presently set forth.
Eis a counterbalance weight movable vertically in the box or hollow portion a of stile B.
F is a cable connected at one end to said Weight and passed over the sheave B and down through an opening in the arm D of sash O, and Or is a vertically movable, weatherexcluding guard disposed under the arm D of sash O and connected to the opposite end of cable F, with reference to the weight E.
i The said guard G is preferably made of metal and is of I-form in cross-section, as shown. It is arranged between the stile A and sash C, in the vertical grooves thereof, and so that both of its parallel wallsf bar the passage of air between the stile and sash, Fig. 2, and hence it will be apparent that said guard will effectually prevent the assage of a draft of air between the stile an sash.
In vassembling the parts of my improvements, the guard G is placed in the groove or guideway of the stile A and is connected at its upper end to the cable F, after which said guard is pulled down to the lower end of the sash frame. The Sash O is then placed in the upper portion of the sash frame, opposite the groove or guideway l), and the guard Gr is moved up into the groove or guideway d of the sash until the upper end of the guard brings up against the arm D on the sash, when the Structure is ready for use.
In the practical use of the improvements, it will be apparent that the sash O will ride up and down on the guard G, and consequently the guard will perform the function ascribed to it irrespective of whether the sash is raised or lowered; and it will also be apparent that in addition to preventing the passage of a draft of air between the stile and sash, the guard G will hold the sash to the stile and in the sash frame.
hile I have shown but one frame stile and one side of a sash together with the elements cooperating with the same, it is obvious that in practice my improvements will be employed at opposite sides of the sash.
The construction herein shown and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I desire it understood that in practice such changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of parts may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
In the construction showny in Fig. 3, the bar O of the sash, which is preferably of sheet-metal, is provided in its inner side with a vertical groove M, and in the said groove is arranged a pane of glass N much thinner than said groove. With a view of fastening the thin pane in the comparatively large IOO IOS
' groove, I provide the Wedge P, preferably of Wood, and the clip Q, of sheet-metal. The latter, as shown, has a U-shaped portion R to receive the edge of the pane of glass, and the angular arm S to bear against one side Wall of the groove M, and by its use it Will be apparent that panes of glass much thinner than the groove M is Wide may be securely -IiXed in said groove. The said clip Q of course extends throughout the height' of the pane of glass, and one is used in each side bar of the sash.
Having described my invention, What l claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
The combination of the side stile of a sash frame; said stile being hollow and having a vertical groove or guideway at its inner side, a sheave mounted on said stile, a counterbalance Weight movable vertically in the stile, a cable passed over the sheave and connected to the Weight, a vertically slidable sash having a groove in the outer side of its side bar and also having an arm at its upper end arranged to overhang said groove and provided with an opening receiving the ca.- ble, and a vertically movable guard, of I- orm in cross-section,` arranged in the opposed grooves of the stile 0r sash and under the overhanging arm of the latter and connected to the opposite end of the cable, With reference to the counterbalance Weight.
