The upwardly moving steam charged current of air through the space 17 also tends to prevent the over-heating of the side walls of the chamber, thereby obviating the sticking of clinkers to the wall while the body of water collected at 32 in contact with the lower end of the wall 2 tends to reduce the temperatureat the bottom of the gas producerchamber, so that the clinkers passing downward with the body of ashes remain separated and canreadily be withdrawnfrom the water sealed it 34. In a gas producer, a gas producing chamber having its side walls vertically parallel at the lower end of said chamber with a contract-edsection near the upper end of the chamber, by which the diameter of the chamber is reduced, and having its side walls gradually flaring near the upper end of the chamber, a concentric twyer entering the upper end ot'the chamber, a double cover for said chamber inclosing an air space communicating with said twyer, an annular air space surrounding the vertical wall of the c amber communicating with the space between said covers, and an opening at the bot tom of said annular air space for the admission of air.
