THOMAS M. SHROOK, OF GARDNERSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TOBACCO-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7', 1907.
Application filed July 13, 1906. Serial No. 326,154.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs M. SnRooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gardnersville, in the county of Pendleton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Hanger, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for hanging leaf tobacco in barns and the object of my invention is to provide a cheap and labor saving method of performing such work.
My invention comprises a horizontal bar on each end of which is attached a revolving iron crosspiece or jack the ends of which are forked outward at right angles and provided through the center with a hole or boxing. To each one of the crosspieces is attached an iron pawl provided with a coil spring. On each end of the horizontal bar is a spindle which is inserted into the boxing of the iron jacks. The said spindle is provided with an iron ratchet wheel which connects the hori zontal bar with the iron jacks'by the iron pawls attached to said acks in such manner as to cause the iron jacks to revolve when the horizontal bar is turned one way and to cause the iron jacks to remain stationary when the horizontal bar is turned in the opposite direction.
The horizontal bar is manipulated by a small lever attached to said bar near its center to which is attacheda drag rope extending to the operator of the device. The horizontal bar is also provided with two small iron pulleys over which ropes pass from the hanging device to the operator.
The hanging device consists of two wooden slats of the same length joined at one end by an iron hinge in such manner as to admit of being closed or folded together and secured at the other end by a spring snap.
The top slat is provided with staples to which the ropes from the pulleys on the horizontal bar are attached and the bottom slat is provided with iron loops through which pass a wooden sliding slat said slat being provided with two iron hooks.
A combination of said devices to be used for hanging leaf tobacco in barns is constructed in the following manner reference being made to the accompanying drawing.
Jacks B. B. as shown in the accompanying drawing rest firmly on the top of the racking E E of the barn and are revolved by the lever A inconjunction with ratchet wheels "M M and iron pawls N N in such manner as to cause the iron jacks B B to revolve one fourth way around at each oper ation, and thereby cause said jacks to walk or move from one end of the racking E E to the other and carry the horizontal bar C across the barn by degrees.
The ropes L L passing over the pulleys D D on the horizontal bar O to the hanging device F enable the operator'of the device to elevate or lower the hanging device F to any of the racks at will.
The hanging device F is operated by a rope "L attached to the sliding slat J thence over pulleys on the hanging device F to the operator of the device in such manner as to enable the said operator to lift the sliding slat J by a sliding motion and at the same time close or fold the hanging de vice F until the ends are secured by the spring snap G.
The stick containing Ithe tobacco to be hung is placed on the hooks K K on the sliding slat J and by properly operating the device one end of the said stick will be brought into position on the rack E by the sliding motion of the sliding slat J and the other end of the said stick will be brought into position on the opposite rack E by closing or folding the hanging device F. When the stick containing the tobacco to be hung is placed on the racks in the foregoing manner it can be disengaged from the hooks K K andthe tobacco left hanging by lowering the hanging device F to the operator.
What I claim and desire Letters Patent of the United States is.
1. In a tobacco hanger the combination of a horizontal bar C with a tilting lever A attached to said bar near its center and ratchet wheels M M attached near each end, said bar having at each end a revolving crosspiece or jack B B provided with small iron pawls N N engaging with ratchets M M, said horizontal bar C being also provided with two pulleys D D over which ropes L L pass and are arranged to elevate or lower the hanging device F substantially as described.
2. In a tobacco hanger the combination with the bar C and revolving jacks B B of a hanging device F consisting of two slats joined at one end by an iron hinge "11 in such manner as to fold together the oppo- IOC ITO
site end of one of said slats being provided With a spring snap G for securing said hanging device F When folded together and a slat J sliding through iron loops I I I on the hanging device F said slat being provided With hooks K K substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
