To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LIPSOIIUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bolsters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bolster, embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one form of filler; Fig. 3 is a view partly in end elevation and partly in cross section of the bolster shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of my invention; and Fig. 5 is a view partly in end elevation and partly in cross section of the bolster shown in Fig. 4.
This invention relates to bolsters for railway rolling stock, and particularly to that type which are built up from rolled or pressed metal members.
The object of my invention is to provide a bolster which can be manufactured at a small cost and which will possess the necessary strength to stand the strains to which it is subjected. To this end, I have devised a bolster in which the sides are formed by two flanged members, preferably I beams, channels, or Z beams, having their upper flanges connected together by a top plate. A member, bent in the form of a truss, is connected at its opposite ends to the lower flanges of the members that form the sides of the bolster, and suitable members are interposed between said side members and the trussedshaped member to impart the necessary rigidity to the bolster.
Referring to Figs. 12 & 3 of the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates channel-shaped members which form the sides of the bolster, although I beams or Z beams could be used if desired.
A continuous top cover plate 2 is connected to the upper flanges of the side members by rivets 3 and a plate 4 bent to truss form as shown in Fig. 1, is connected at its opposite ends to the lower flanges at the end portions of the side members 1. A filler which may be in the form of a single casting, as shown in Fig. 1, is interposed between the truss-shaped member 4 and the lower flanges of the side members, but I prefer to form said flller in sections as shown in Fig. 2. The central section consists oi two eliannel-siiaped pieces 5, which are connected together by a web 6, provided with a king bolt opening, surrounded by an upwardly projer ting llange 7. Flanges 8 project upwardly from each oi the channel-shaped pieces 5, and when the filler is in operative position, these flanges bear against the inner faces of the side members 1 of the bolster as shown in Fig. 8, the pieces 5 being interposed between the trussshaped member 4 and the lower flanges of the side members.
The upwardly projecting flanges 8 on the pieces 5 are reinforced and strengthened by transversely extending ribs 9, formed integral with the web 6, and also tapered ribs 10 that are formed integral with the flange 7 that surrounds the king bolt opening in the web 6. livets 11, or other suitable iastening devices, extend through the lower flanges 011 the side members and through the pieces 5 and trussshaped member a to securely fasten all of said members together; the pieces 5 being provided with perforated ribs or spacers 12, formed integral with the laterally extending legs oi said pieces to surround the rivets 11. The end sections of the filler consist of wedge-shaped channel pieces 13, whiehare secured in position by rivets 11. The inner ends of the pieces 13 and the outer ends oi the pieces 5 are so shaped that scarf joints are formed, and these sections are secured together by two of the rivets 11.
In Figs. 4 & 5, I have shown a modified form of my invention in which the cast ilillers are replaced by rolled or pressed metal L-shaped members 1 1, having their horizontal legs connected to the truss-shaped memberet by rivets 15, the vertical le s of said members being connected to the inner faces of the webs of the side members 1 by rivets 16. In this form a casting 17, provided with a king bolt opening, :is arranged between the vertical legs of the members 14, as shown in Fig. 5.
In both forms of my invention, a center bearing 18 and side bearings II) are secured to the underneath side of the truss-shaped member 1.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bolster consisting of two parallel members provided with upper and lower flanges, a truss-shaped member the opposite IIO ends of which are connected to the lower flanges of said parallel members, devices arranged at the center of the bolster and connected to said truss member and parallel members, and a top cover plate connected to the upper flanges of the parallel members.
2. A bolster consisting of parallel flanged members, a top cover plate connected to said members, a truss-shaped member connected at its opposite ends to the end portions of the parallel members, and a filler connected to said truss-shaped member, and to the lower flanges of the parallel members.
3. A bolster, consisting of parallel flanged members, a truss-shaped member having its opposite ends connected to the lower flanges of said parallel members, and a filler interposed between said flanges and truss-shaped member.
4. A bolster consisting of flanged members connected together by a top plate, a trussshaped member connected at its opposite ends to said flanged members, and a filler arranged between the lower flanges of said members and said truss-shaped member and consisting of parallel pieces connected at their centers by a web.
5. A bolster consisting of flanged members connected together by a top plate, a trussshaped member connected at its opposite ends to said flanged members, and a filler arranged between the lower flanges of said members and said truss-shaped member and consisting of channel-shaped pieces eXtending parallel to each other and joined at their centers by a web, said pieces being provided with upwardly extending flanges which contact with the inner faces of the flanged members.
6. A bolster consisting of parallel flanged members, a top plate fastened to the upper flanges of said members, a truss-shaped mem ber connected at its opposite ends to the lower flanges of said members, and fillers interposed between the lower flanges of said members and the truss-shaped members, said fillers consisting of a plurality of sections having their co-operating ends shaped to form scarf joints.
7. A bolster consisting of parallel members provided with outwardly projecting flanges, a top cover plate connected to the upper flanges of said members, a flat plate bent into truss form and connected at its opposite ends to the lower flanges of said members, and a flller interposed between said lower flanges and the truss-shaped member, said filler consisting of parallel pieces having wedge-shaped ends and a cen tral connecting web.
8. A bolster consisting of parallel mem bers connected together, a truss-shaped member arranged underneath said members and fastened thereto, and a filler interposed between said members and the truss-shaped member and consisting of parallel channelshaped pieces, each of which has perforated ribs arranged between its horizontal legs, and'a web which connects said pieces and is provided with a flange that surrounds a king bolt opening.
9. A bolster consisting of flanged memhers-arranged parallel to each other and con nected together, a truss-shaped member connected to the lower flanges of said parallel members, and a filler extending throughout the major portion of the length of the bolster and interposed between said lower flanges and the truss-shaped member; substantially as described.
