I Be it known that I, EDWARD KAYLOR, a resident of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in `-Railway-Car Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to railway car trucks, and has special reference to the side-frames for the same, such as are manufactured or pressed from wrought metal, such as steel.
The object of my invention is to' form such a railway car truck side-frame which will be sim le and durable in its construction, will be .easi y and cheaply manufactured and will have a maximum in strength and a minimum in weight.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction.' and combination of parts, as hereinafter 'more speciiically set forth and described and par-y ticularly ointed out in the. claims.

As illustrated in the drawings 1 represents my improved railway car truck of the fourwheel type, which is preferably formedv of pressed steel and 2 represents the side-frames thereof which-have a main member 2 formed I from sheet metal and first made to the proper shape or contour to provide for the central portion 3 and the end 'pieces or portions 4 thereon having the recesses or openings 5 formedtherein for the pedestals 5 to hold the journal-boxes (not shown). forming part of the top flange 8. An end opening 16 is also formed in each end piece formed 1n said end portions 4 in forming the pedestals 5. The side-edges 17 of the opening 16 in said end-piece 14 are anged outwardly to form the guide-bars or plates 17, such plates 1-7 extendin down from the lower edge of the spring-cap 15 on` said end-piece and the inner side plate 17 forms part of and connects with a small flange 18" formed on a projecting portion 18 opposite theprojecting portion 10 on. themain member` 2, while such flange 18 forms part of andl connects with an upwardly extendingflanged portion 18 formingpart of and connecting with a smalll flange 14 onthe base 14"- of said end-piece. The outer side plate 1'7 forms part of and connects with a small flange 19 formed on the base 191l of the projectmg end portion 19 opposite the projecting end portion 4 and this flange 19 forms part of and. connects with. a fia e 20 eX tending around the end-face 20 o .said endpiece 14 so as to form part of and connect with the top-'flange 20 opposite thel topflange 8 on the end portion 4- of the main member 2.
The guide-bars or plates 13 and 17 'are used to strengthen the parts and support the spring-.caps 12 and 15, .and they are also used as means for holding and confining the Wear'- ing-plates 21 in position, which wearing plates have flanges 21 thereon for fitting over the edges 21 of said plates 13 and 17 to support and secure the same in place. Slots 22 are formed in the Wearing plates 21 for the reception of a tie-bar 22 which asses through the same and between raise p0rtions 23 formed on the projecting portlons 10 andlS and projecting end portions 4 and 19 on said main member 2 and end pieces 14 respectively, while suchtie-bar 22 is held in place by means of bolts 23 which ass through said projecting portions 10 an 1S and projecting end portions 4 and 19. After the end-pieces 14 are attached to the endportions 4 on the front face of the main member 2 to form the side-frames 2 of my improved railway car truck 1, the saidfrarnesl transom or bolster 25' Z'are connected to tlextending between we -same by means of `rivets 25 which par through the-channelbars 25" of said bolster 25 and through the flanges 8 and l() on the main member 2 of the side-frames 2, vWhile such bars 25 are also adapted to carry the plate 27 which is secured thereto and on which is secured the.

`In Fig. 11 the guide-bars or plates 13 and 17 for t e edestals 5 and shown in the figures just escribed are dispensed with, and in such case the wearing-plates 21 are placed around the body 32" of the bar 31. YJ'
In Figs. 12 and 13 there is illustrated an other form of my improved railway car truck, in which the end portion 4 of the main member 2 has an integral end-piece 34 formed at the end thereof, so that by having first formed the spring-caps, guide-bars or plates, etc. thereon and in the same manner as before described, and end-piece 34 ycan be folded inwardly along the dotted line 35 to register the spring-caps, guide-bars or plates with those on the end ortion of the main member and be attache to said main memberas before described. In this case the tie-bar can pass through openings 36 formed by recesses 36 in said end-portions 4 land end-piece 36 when these parts register with each other and these parts can also be ,further secured by riveting through openings IOO vention is illustrated in which the side-frame- 2 is formed of two main members 2, 2, the one analogous to the other, except that they are right and left and the two-members are arranged to overlap or iit within the other as will be seen by reference to Fig. 17 of the drawings, in which a fiange 8a is shown onthe member 2 as fitting over the flange 8 on the member 2, and each member is provided with the spring-caps, guide-bars, tie-bar recesses, etc.
In Figs. 18 to 22`there is illustrated a sideframe for use in a six-wheel truck which contains the invention, and in such case a pedestal portion 5 is formed at each end and in the center of the main member, while the attachable pedestal ort-ions 14 are placed on the outside of said, main member' and both the portions forming each pedest v 5 have the spring-caps, guide-bars-and ot er portions formed thereon in the manner before described. y
It will be obvious that a number of pedestals can be placed in the side-frame and any suitable form of a transom or bolster can be attached to said side-frame and in any suitable manner, While a fiange may be formed on the inner edge of the attachable or connecting portions if desired in some cases, and in other cases all of the flanges shown on said portions may be dispensed With if desired. These and various other modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved car truck may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that my improved railway car truck will be provided with a side frame of great strength and simplicity, which will be capable of being strengthened at the center or any portion as may be found necessary in ractice under different requirements and wit out' adding any unnecessary Weight to the balance of the frame.
It will also be seen that such a side-frame will overcome many defective trucks now in use or manufactured caused by the distortion of the metal in the bending, pressing or other manner of forming the frame, as well as owing to the complicated and difficult bends necessary in these constructions of trucks,
and if the thickness of metal is increased additional dead Weight is added to the truck, So
that by my invention a certain thickness can be successfullyloperated upon at all times.
It will further be seen that the weakness usually incident in the outer member of the yoke or pedestal embracing the journal-boxes will be overcome by the use of a double, thickness of metal at this point of any desired gage which will be flanged and formed to give the greater strength to such pedestals and resist any pressure brought. against the same by the brakes, while if desired the central portion of the side-frame may be formed of comparatively lightv thickness of metal on account of there being a surplusage of carrying strength at this point. Y
It will also be obvious that the construction of the parts forming these pedestal portions of the side-frame gives great strength to the pedestals and rigidity to the construction between said pedestal portions and the bolster or transom, while the single thickness of metal at the center of the frame will give sufficient resiliency to said frame and allow it to conform to the curves ofthe track on whichthe truck is used.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a flanged main-member having an integral pedestal portion formed thereon, and another pedestal portion adapted to be attached vto said integral portion to form doubled sheets of metal.
2. A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a flanged main-memberV having an integral pedestal portion formed thereon, another pedestal portion adapted to be attached to said integral portion to form doubled sheets of metal, and an integral flanged portion on said pedestal portions to form a spring-cap.

A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a flanged -main-member having an integral pedestal portion formed thereon, another pedestal portion adapted to be attached to said integral portiontoiforrn doubled sheets of metal, raised portions on said pedestal portions for forming recesses between said portions, and atie-bolt orbar secured to and fitting within said recesses and'between said pedestal portions.

A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck4 comprising a flanged main-member, pedestal portions on said main-member for for being secured to and fitting around and between said pedestal portions to form wearing surfaces by its body portion, said yoke having its flanged portion cut-away at its base to receive a tie-bolt or bar.
9. A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a flanged main-member,
pedestal portions on said main-member for forming apedestal, a yoke secured to and fitting around and between said pedestal portions and wearing-plates fitting over and around said yoke.

A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a flanged main-member, pedestal portions on said main-member for forming a pedestal, a yoke formed of a T-bar for being secured to and 'fitting around and between s aid pedestal portions, and wearingplates fitting over and around the body portion of said yoke.

A sheet metal side-frame for-a railway truck comprising a flanged main-member, pedestal portions on said main-member for forming a pedestal, a yoke formed of a T-bar for being secured to and fitting around and between said pedestal portions, said yoke having its flanged portion cut-'away at its base to receive a tie-bolt or bar, and wearingplates fitting over and around the body p0rtion of said yoke.

A sheet metal side-frame for a railway truck comprising a' flanged main-member, pedestal portions on said main-member for forming a pedestal, a yoke formed of a T-bar for being secured to and fitting around and between said pedestal portions, said-yoke being cut-away at its base and having openings through its body portion'at such cut-away portion, a tiebolt or bar passing through and secured within said openings, and wearingplates fitting over and around the body-portion of said yoke.
