CARDlNG-IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application fil d December 12,1906. Serial No. 347,426.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN A. Knnon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Carding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a condenser carding-machine as to provide for maintaining, at all times, proper relation between the ring doffer and the wipe roll which co-operattes therewith, while at the same time permitting any desired adjustment of the ring dotl'er in respect to the main cylinder of the machine, or of the wipe roll in respect to the said ring dofler. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side view of sufl'icient of a condenser carding1nachine to illustrate my invention, and Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of the same.
In the drawing 1 represents part of the frame of a condenser carding-machine, on Wlllt 11 is mounted the bearings for the main cylinder, and 2 a bracket secured to or forming part of said frame and carrying the bearing for the shaft 3, of the ring dotl'er 4, and also the hanger 5, which constitutes the bearing for the shaft 6 of the wipe roll 7. Usually this hanger is secured to, or forms part of, tl 3 frame Wlllt' 11 carries the rub roll mechanism of the machine, and consequently the wipe roll is mounted independently of the ring dotl'er, and any adjustment of the latter in respect to the main cylinder affects variation in its relation to the wipe roll, an objeetion whirh my invention is intended to overcome by adjusting the ring dofl'er and wipe roll simultaneously toward and from the main cylinder without interfering with the position of the wipe roll in respect to the ring dofl'er.
Secured to, or forming part of, the bracket 2'is a plate 8 which serves as a support for a block 9, the latter constituting one of the bearings for the shaft 3 of the ring dotl'er 4, said shaft turning in a sleeve 10 which is confined within a recess of the block 9 by means of a superposed cap 11, as shown in Fig.1, said block being adjustable from and toward the main cylinder of the machine by means of set screws 12 adapted to threaded openings inlugs 13 on the plate 8, as also shown in Fig. 1.
Secured to, or forming part of, the inner side of the block 9 is an arm 14 which extends rearwar dly from said block and has a U-shaped end, the upper member of which provides a supporting bearing for a slide 15 which can be moved longitudinally back and forth by means of an adjusting screw 16, which has collars on opposite sides of a lug 17 projecting upwardly from the arm 14, a
clamping-bolt 18 passing through a slot 19 in the slide and engaging with the uppcrinember of the arm 14, so as to firmly secure said slide in any position to which it may have been adjusted.
The slide 15 has a vertical member 20 which constitutes a guide for the vertical leg 21 of the hanger 5 constituting the bearing for the wipe roll shaft 6, as shown in Fig. 1, said vertical member. having, at the top, a lug 22 threaded for engagement with a set screw 28 which bears upon the top of the member 20 and serves to effect vertical movement of the hanger leg 21 in respect thereto, a lock-nut 24 securing the set screw 23.
A clamping bolt 25 passes through a slot 26 in the hanger leg 21, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and engages with the vertical member 20 of the slide 15, so as to etlectually secure said hanger leg 21 in any of its positions of vertical adjustment. It will therefore be seen that, although the wipe roll is susceptible of adjustment from and toward the ring dofler and also of adjustment vertically in respect thereto, any movement of the ring dofi'er in respect to the main cylinder of the machine is shared by the wipe roll, hence none of the movements of adjustment of said ring do'fler will affect proper relation of the wipe roll in respect thereto, and proper work and conditions of these two rolls will therefore always be maintained irrespective of the adjustments of the ring dol'ler.
Another advantage of mounting the wipe roll on the main frame of the machine is that I reduce the vibration of this roll which was heretofore carried by the rub roll frame.
.The rub roll mechanism gives to this frame a vibratory motion or tremble, which more or less atlects the relation between the wipe roll and the ring doiler, and in many instances the teeth of the ring do'lfer are injured, but it will be seen that when the wipe roll and ring do'lfer are mounted on the same hearing, if there is any vibratory motion whatever, the
one will have the motion in unison with the other, and thus prolong the life of the card clothing.
While I have illustrated special mechanism for vertically adjusting the Wipe roll and adjusting it toward and from the ring dofier, this mechanism may be modified Without departing from my invention.
I claim 1. The combination in a carding machine, of a ring doffer and Wipe roll, a bearing carrying both the ring doffer and the Wipe roll, means for adjusting said bearing toward and from the main cylinder of the carding machine, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the main frame of a carding machine, a bearing adjustably mounted on said frame, a ring doifer and Wipe roll carried by said bearing, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the ring dofi'er and Wipev roll of a carding-machine and their shafts, With an adjustable bearing for the ring doffer shaft, and a bearing for the Wipe roll shaft carried'by said ring doffer shaft bearing, but having a member movable longitudinally in respect thereto, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the ring doffer-and Wipe roll of a carding-machine and their shafts, With an adjustable bearing for the ring doffer shaft, and a bearing for the Wipe roll shaft carried by said ring doffer shaft bearing, but having a member movable vertically in respect thereto, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the ring doffer and Wipe roll of a carding-machine and their shafts, With an adjustable bearing for the ring doffer shaft, and a bearing for the Wipe roll shaft carried by said ring dofier shaft bearing, but having connected members, one movable longitudinally in respect to the ring doffer shaft and the other movable vertically in respect thereto, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the ring doffer and Wipe rolls of a carding-machine and their shafts, an adjustable bearing for the ring doffer shaft, an arm projecting therefrom, a slide longitudinally movable on said arm, means for adjusting and retaining said slide, a Wipe roll shaft-hanger vertically adjustable on said slide, and means for adjusting and retaining said hanger on the slide, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
