ELMER M. SMITI'IBURG, OF LOCKRIDGE, IOW'A.
SHOCK-COMPRESSOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented April 30, 1907.
Application filed November 17,1906. Serial No. 343,911.
Be it known that I, ELMER M. Snrrnnune,
' ors, being designed for use in compressing or tightening a corn shock during the operation of applying a permanent tie band thereto, and has for its objects to provide a com paratively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be conveniently applied and manipulated, one whereby the shot k will be effectually compressed for application of the tie band thereto, and one which may be readily removed after the band has been applied.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of eonstruetion and combination of parts more fully hereinafter des; ribed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the improved compressing device comprises an open frame 1 presenting a rear handle bar 2 and side bars 3 to meet at their forward ends, as shown, and converge into a forwardly projecting portion or extension t,
which in turn is warped or bifurcated throughout a portion of its length to form diagonal braqing pietes or arms 5, to which there is attached a forwardly curved cross piece or head 6 having terminal bearings 7 on which are journaled grooved guide pul leys 8 for a purpose which will presently appear.
Extended transversely between and terminally journaled in the side bars 3 is a retary drum shaft 9 carrying a drum 10 having end heads 11 and an intermediate head 12, there being titted on one end of the shaft 9 an. operating member or crank 13 terminating its outer end in a handle 1 1 and at its inner end in a circular toothed ratchet 15 adapted for engagement by a gravity pawl 16 pivoted on the adjacent side bar 3, while 5 provided on the drum and preferably carried by the central head 12 is a hook 17 with which. is engaged an endless cable or other flexible compression element 18, portions of which are arranged for travel respectively over the pulleys 1n praetice, the device stands when in action with the drum 10 disposed vertically and the arm or head 6 arranged in a horizontal plane, as illustrated herein. After the corn or other l'naterial has been stacked as usual to form a shock, the cable 18 is opened and applied over the upper end of the shock to embrace the same, after which the handle 13 is manipulated for rotating the drum in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, thereby winding the cable on the drum to tightly compress the shock, it being understood that in this operation thecross head 6 will hear at one side of the shock. After the material has been fully compressed and a tie band secured therearound, as usual, the dog 16 is thrown out of engagement with the ratchet and the drum reversely rotated until the cable has been slackened sulliciently to permit its removal from the shock. In manipulating the device, the handle bar 2 is grasped with one hand while the other end is employed for operating the crank handle.
Iilaving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a frame having forwardly converging upper and lower side members and a vertically disposed end bar constituting a handle, a curved horizontally disposed cross head connected with the converging side members of the frame, a vertieally disposed drum supported for rotation in the upper and lower side members of the frame, guide pulleys supported adjacent to the ends of the cross head, a flexible member guided over said pulleys and having its ends connected with the drum, a ratchet wheel upon the shaft of the drum, a crank conneetedwvith the latter, and a gravity pawl pivoted upon the upper side member of the frame and adapted to engage the ratchet wheel.
In testimony whereof, I ai'lix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EIAIE R M. SMITHBURG.
