ad/5 W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' OSWALD S. PULLIAM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PITTS- BURGI-I EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A OOR-- PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SIDE-FRAME CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application filed January 29. 1907. Serial No. 354,678.'
Patented April 30, 1907.
To all whom it may concern.-
vBe it known that I, OSWALD S. PULLIAM, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Side- Frame Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a new and improved side-frame construction for car-trucks and to this end the present lnvention consists, of a new and improved side frame construction for cartrucks, in the novel features of construction, and in the combination of parts all as fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates an application of my invention, Figure 1, is a side elevational view of my sideframe construction; Fig. 2, a similar view of the side-frame without the bolster, bolstersprings, etc.; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a removable bolster-guide.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a side-frame proper preferably made of castmetal and as an integral structure. The
frame is formed with a centrally disposed bolster receiving'opening 2.
The form of bolster 3, as illustrated, is provided with column-guides 4 and is adapted to have its ends inserted into opening 2.
The lower portion of opening 2, is wider than the upper portion and the width of the lower portion should be at least asgreat as the width of the bolster measured over its column-guides 4. The purpose of this construction is to enable the bolster-ends to be readily inserted into the said enlarged portion of the opening. The Width of the upper portion of the opening is less than the wi th -of the bolster measured over its columnguides and this portion is bounded by a ange 5 extending along the top and sides of the smaller portion of the opening. The
side flanges5 serve as bolster-guides for. the bolster when the parts areassembled'.
6 designates removable bolster guides preferably of the form shown, that is, comprising a forked engagin earin face 8 and vertical ed es 9 all sis-pal? ticularly shown by Fig. 5. W en the removable bolsterides are assembled with the other arts, t e forked portion of each guide portion 7, a flat' stradd es the web 10 of the side-frame proper and the vertical edges 9 form a continuation of the bolsteruides or side-fian es 5 and are in contact wit the column-guides 4 formed on the bolster.
11 designates the usual bolster-springs employed in. constructions of this nature, their up er ends being in contact with the bolster an their lower ends surrounding studs 12 of a plate 13. "What I claim is:
1. In a truck side-frame construction, the
combination with a bolster having columnguides, a side-irame'proper having a bolster receiving 0 enin formed on t e si e-i'rame. adjacent to the sides of the openin and removable bolster uides below the forming a continuation thereof:
2. In a truck side-frame'construction, the
combination with a bolster having column guides, a side-frame proper provided with a bolster receiving opening havin portion at least as wide as the b0 ster measured over its columnuides and the upper portion of less width t an the bolster meas-' fixed bolster 4 guidesv its lowered bolster-guides and r
