the Province of Quebec, Canada, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Incandescent-Lamp Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to adjustable suspensions for incandescent electric lamps; the object of my invention is to provide a device which is easily attached to a base, permitting the electric connections to the feed Wire to be readily made outside of the base; a further object is so provide a canopy or casing of non-conducting material constructed to receive and hold the movable parts without the use of screws, or similar fastening means, so that the parts may be easily inserted into and removed from the casing; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the base.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an open ended canopy or casing, constructed of a non-conducting material, preferably porcelain. The canopy is provided with an open ing 2 in its bottom, adjacent which is disposed a roller 3, and in which is disposed a bushing i, so as to lessen the wear on the cord which supports the incandescent lamp. On one side on the inner face of its wall, the canopy 1 is provided with longitudinal oll'set lugs 5, projecting from the bottom of which are ledges 6, adapted to maintain an inserti ble bearing in position, without the use of screws or similar fastening means. The lugs 5 are provided with recesses 7 adjacent their upper end, in which a fastening member is adapted to project for the purpose of securing a spring contact in position, as hereinafter described. The inner lace of the wall of the casing 1 on the side opposite to the lugs 5, is provided with a recess 8 adapted to receive a bearing, and the upper edge of the casing is prov'ded with slots 9 adapted to receive teed wires.
Disposed in the upper part of the canopy 1, and adapted to support the same, is a base 1 0 of non-conducting m atcrial, provided with channels 11 in its outer face, in alincnient with the slots 9 of the canopy 1 and adapted to receive the feed wires 12. Adjacent one end of the channels 1]., the base is provided with contacts 13, secured in position by means of the screws 14, which contacts extend over the channels 11, so that a connection may be easily made with the feed wires 12 without removing the base, or without taking the apparatus to pieces. Leading from the contacts 13, are fuse wires 15, connected to contacts 16, on the inner face of the base 10. The base 10 is provided with openings 17, adapted to receive suitable fastening members such as screws, and on its inner face the base is provided with an insulating partition 18, adapted to electrically separate the contacts carried 011 the inner face of the base. Formed adjacent the opening 17 on the base, are squared recesses 19, in which are disposed the angular brackets 20, which brackets are provided with openings adapted to receive the screws 21, by means of which the canopy 1 is secured to the base 10.
Disposed on one side of the canopy 1, are a pair of spring contacts 22, held in position by bolts 22, the rats on which are disposed in the recesses 7, hcroinbclore described. These contacts 22 on the canopy bear against the contacts 16, on the inner face of the base, which contacts are in connection, as described, with the feed wires 12.
Disposed transversely of the canopy 1 is a spindle 23, having adjacent one end a ratchet wheel 24. One end of a spring 25 is seci'zred to the spindle, and the spring is coiled about the spindle and has its opposite end scciired to a pin 26 carried by a bearing plate 27, adapted to be inserted in the recess formed between the lr gs 5, and having its lower end disposed behind the projecting ledges 6, so
with a central opening 28, adapted to receive the adjacent end of the spindle 23, and to form a bearing therefor. Carried on one end of the bearing plate 27, is a pawl 29, adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 24 and the spin dle 23, so that a tension may be maintained on the spring when the spindle is rotated in one direction.
Disposed on the spindle intermediate of its ends, is a pair of disks of non-conducting material. Disposed on the end of a spindle opposite the ratchet wheel 24, is a pair of contact disks 31, separated by srtitable insulating material 32. These contact disks 31 are so disposed as to be constantly bearing against the contacts 22 hereinbefore described.
Disposed around the spindle between the disks 30, is an insulated cord bearing two wires, one wire 34 of which is connected to one disk 31, and the other wire 35 of which is connected to the other disk 31, so that an electrical connection is made from the wires to the disks 31, from thence to the spring contacts 22, from thence to the contacts 16 on the inner face of the base, throrgh the fLlSe wires 15, the contacts 13, and to the feed wires 12.
Disposed in the slot 3, on the side of the canopy opposite to the recess formed by the hgs 5, is an insertible bearing block 36, adapted to receive the opposite end of the spindle 23, so that the spindle is rotatably srpported by this bearing block 36 and the bearing plate 27, both of which are adapted to be inserted, as described, and held in position witholit the use of screws or similar fastening members.
The base 10 is provided with a recess 37, adapted to. receive the Upper portion of the spring 25 when in expanded position.
Having this fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a canopy provided with recesses, bearings disposed in the recesses, a rotatable spindle car ried by the bearings, contact disks carried by the spindle, contacts carried by the canopy and adapted to bear on the contacts and the spindle, contacts carried by the canopy and adapted to bear on the contacts on the spindle, a base secured to the canopy, and con- .tacts on the base adapted to bear on the contacts on the canopy.
3. In a device of the character described, a canopy provided with slots adapted to receive feed wires and provided with recesses, bearings disposed in the recesses, a rotatable spindle carried by the bearings, contacts carried by the spindle, contacts carried by the canopy, a base secured to the canopy and provided with channels registering with the slots in the canopy, and contacts on the base adapted to bear on the contacts carried by the canopy.
4. In a device of the character described, a canopy provided with slots, a spindle mounted to rotate in the canopy, contacts carried by the spindle, contacts carried by the canopy, a base provided with channels registering with the slots in the canopy, contacts on the base adjacent the channels, contacts on.
the base arranged to bear on the contacts carried by the canopy, and a connection between said contacts and the base.
5. In a device of the character described, a canopy provided with a recess having projecting ledges and provided with a recess on the opposite side thereof, a bearing plate disposed in the recess behind the ledges and provided with an opening, an inserted bearing in the recess on the opposite side of the canopy,
a spindle disposed in the bearings, a base adapted to srpport the canopy, and means for making electrical connection from the base to the spindle.
