I hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for plate glass and show cases.
The object of this invention is to provide constructions of the character indicated which will be strong and not subject to breakage.
My invention, therefore, consists in providing a new and improved clamp for sccur ing together the glass plates, in constructions of the character indicated, which can be readily applied, which will form a 'lirm joint and which will also have sullicient flexibility to permit the glass plates to shift or settle without breaking.
My invention also consists in the features of construction and combination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view in elevation of a portion of two plates of glass secured together by a clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line -l-4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of the inner member of my clamp detached. Fig. 6 is a view of the outer member of my clamp detached. Fig. 7 is a view of the locking me mbcr or key which socures the inner and outer members of the clamp together.
Again referring to the drawings 1 and 2 represent two plates of glass which are arranged at an angle to each other. Between the meeting edges of the glass plates is preferably arranged a filling 3 of :felt or other suitable material. The clamp comprises an outer member consisting of an angle plate 4 provided with a flat stem 5 arranged to pass between the edges of the abutting glass plates and of sullicient length to project a short distance beyond the inner faces of the glass plates. The angle plate I and the stem 5 are preferably made integral,
both being formed from a single strip of sheet metal folded or pressed into the desired form, so that the angle plate and the stern are each formed of a double thickness of the metallic strip. On the inner end of the stem 5 is formed an abutment consisting of two oppositely extending tongues 6. These tongues extend at a right angle from the stem 5 and are not arranged vertically but are given a slight inclination. The tongues 6 are preferably formed by bending over the ends of the strips which form the stem 5 and said tongues (3 therefore have a certain amount of resiliency. The inner member of the clamp comprises an angle plate 8 arranged to lit into the inner angle formed by the glass plates 1 and 2. In the angle plate 8 is formed a slot 9 which extends upwardly from the lower edge of the angle plate and is sufficiently wide to receive the stem 5, so that the angle plate 8 can be slipped down over and rest on said stem. When in its proper position the inner angle plate 8 will be exactly opposite the outer angle plate 4. The locking member consists of a yoke shaped wedge 10 which is arranged to straddle the stem 5 between the angle plate 8 and the abutment formed by the tongues 6 on the stem 5. The face of the wedge 10 toward the angle plate 8 is pref erably vertical and the face of the wedge toward the abutment is inclined corresponding to the inclination of the tongues 6. Near the lower end of the wedge 10 at each side is formed a reinforcing lug or projection 11. These lugs 11 are designed to press against the angle plate 8 near its center where the slot 9 is formed and provide a backing and reinforcement for the angle plate 8 at this point. i
The advantages of my clamp will be readily perceived as it facilitates the erection of constructions of the character set forth. and prevents the breaking of the glass plates both during the erection and also in case the plates settle or shift after being assembled and further after the clamp has been set it is impossible for the members to work loose. l/Vhen the plates of glass which are to form a show case or similar construction are set up the outer member of my clamp is placed on the corner formed by the two alnitting plates and the stem is inserted between the edges of the plates. The inner clamp nieml/er is then dropped down over the stem and shoved close against the inner faces of the glass plates and the locking member or wedge 10 is then inserted between the inner clamp member and the abutment on the stem so as to straddle the stem and on being pressed down it will draw inthe outer clamp member and press out the inner clamp member thereby clamping the glass plates tightly between the said members. It is not necessary to use any tool in assembling the clamp as the wedge can be forced into position by hand and therefore the pressure exerted can be delicately gaged, thereby avoiding any danger of breaking the clamp or fracturing the glass plates. The resiliency of the abutment will tend to prevent any harm resulting from undue pressure on the wedge as the abutment will yield before the glass breaks and also the resiliency of the abutment serves to lock the wedge in place after the wedge has been set, absolutely preventing the wedge from working loose.
In constructing a show-case, show-window or the like, as many of my clamps can be used as is desired but the fewer the number of clamps employed the better the appearance of the construction. On account of the strength and firmness of my clamp a very stable construction can be made with the use of few clamps.
What I claim is:
1. In a construction of the character indi cated, the combinat on of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer clamp member arranged on the outer faces of said plates, an inner clamp member arranged on the inner faces ofsaid plates opposite the outer clamp member, a stem connected with the outer clamp member and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner clamp member, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a locking member arranged between said inner clamp member and said abutment.
2. In a construction of the character indi cated the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer clamp member arranged on the outer faces of said plates an inner clamp member on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer clamp member, a stem connected with the outer clamp member and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner clamp member, a resilient abutment on the inner end of said stem and a locking member arranged between said inner clamp member and said abutment.
3. In a construction of the character indi cated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at angle to each other, an outer clamp member arranged on the outer faces of i said plates, an inner clamp member arranged on the inner faces of said plates, opposite the outer clamp member, a seem connected with the outer clamp member and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner clamp member, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a wedge-shaped locking member arranged between said inner clamp member and said abutment.
4. In a construction of the character indi cated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer clamp member arranged on the outer faces of said plates an inner clamp member arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer clamp member, a stem connected with the outer member and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner clamp member, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a yoke shaped wedge arranged to straddle said stem between said inner clamp member and said abutment.
5. In a construction of the character indi cated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other an outer clamp member arranged on the outer faces of said plates an inner clamp member arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer clamp member and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner clamp member, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a yoke shaped wedge arranged to straddle said stem between said inner clamp member and said abutment said wedge having lugs on each side for reinforcing the inner clamp member.
6. In a construction of the character indicated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other an outer angle plate arranged on the outer faces of said plates an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer angle plate, a stem connected with the outer angle plate and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner angle plate, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a locking member arranged between said inner angle plate and said abutment.
7. In a construction of the character indi cated the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer angle plate arranged on the outer faces of said plates, an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer angle plate, a stem connected with the outer angle plate and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner angle plate, a resilient abutment on the inner end of said stem and a locking member arranged between said inner angle plate and said abutment.
8. In a construction of the character indicated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer angle plate arranged on the outer faces of said plates, an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer IOC angle plate, a stem connected with the outer angle plate and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner angle plate, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a wedge-shaped locking member arranged between said inner angle plate and said abutment.
9. In a construction of the character indicated, the combination. of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer angle plate arranged on the outer faces of said plates an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer angle plate, a stem connected with the outer angle plate and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the inner angle plate, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a yoke shaped wedge arranged to straddle said stem between said inner angle plate and said abutment.
10. In a construction of the character indicated, the combination of two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, an outer angle platearranged on the outer faces of said plates, an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer angle plate and extending between the abuting edges of the glass plates and through the inner angle plate, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a yoke shaped wedge arranged to straddle said stem between said inner angle plate and said abutment, said wedge having lugs on each side for reinforc ing the inner angle plate l l l l l l i 11. In a construction of the character indicated, the combination o'l two glass plates arranged at an angle to each other, airouter angle plate arranged on the outer faces of said plates, an inner angle plate arranged on the inner faces of said plates opposite the outer angle plate and having a slot extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, a stem connected with the outer angle plate and extending between the abutting edges of the glass plates and through the slot in the inner angle plate, an abutment on the inner end of said stem and a locking memlter arranged between said inner angle plate and said abutment.
12. In a emistruction of the character indicated the romliination ol' two glass plates arranged at an angle, an outer clamp member comprising an angle plate and a stem integral therewith, formed from a single strip of sheet metal lolded so as to impart a double thickness to the angle plate and to the stem, tongues formed on the inner end of said stem, an inner angle plate arranged to slip over said stem and a wedge-shaped locking member arranged to straddle said stem between the said tongues and said inner clamp memher.
