Description

- No. 851.669. PATBNTED APR. 30, 1907.
` T. U. JOHNSON. GARTRIDGE DEFLECTOR FOR TOP EJEGT'ION .GUNS.
APPLIOATION PILED MAB.. 4.190?.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. JOHNSON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WIN- CHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT,
A CORPORATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aprl 30, 1907.
Application filed Ma c 4,190?. Serial No. 360.475.
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, THOMAS C. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the County of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in- Cartridge-De flectors for Top-Ejection Guns; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection With the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a view in side elevation of a gun provided with my invention. Fig. 2 a view thereof in vertical section on the line (-b of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to an improvement in Cartridge defiectors for top ej ecton-openng guns having centrally arranged telescopes, the object being to provide simple and reliable means for defiecting the cartridges laterally clear of the telescope.
With these ends in view, my invention conssts in a defiector construeted and arranged to be engaged by spent shells when ejected through the top of a gun, whereby the shells are deflected laterally, and in certain details of Construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a cartridge-defiector 2 made of sheet metal bent on its longitudinal aXis so as to form an acute angle and secured to the lower face of the telescope 3 so that the point formed by bending it stands considerably to one side of a vertical plane passing through the aXis of the telescope which is mounted in any approved manner upon the top of the gun. As shown the rear mounting 4 is Secured to the gun-barrel 6 but it might be attached to the top of the receiver 7. The rear end of the telescope is thus located directly above the cartridge-ejection opening 8 in the top of the receiver 7. It will be readily seen that Were the telescope arranged centrally over the barrel of a gun having a top ejection-opening, the cartridges in being ejected would be thrown directly against the lower face of the telescope and on the rebound Would renter the ejection-opening. My improved defiector, however, presents a defiecting surface to the cartridges which are by it defiected laterally and are hence clear of the telescope.
I claim 1. The conbination with a gun having a top ejection-opening, of a cartridge-defiector extending partly over the said opening in position to laterally defiect the spent shells ejected th erethrough.
2. A telescope provided upon its lower face with a cartridge-deflector.
3. In a gun, the combination with a receiver having a top ejection-opening, of a telescope extending at its rear end centrally over the said opening, and a cartridge-defiector carried by the telescope and located in position to laterally defiect the shells ej'ected through the said opening.
In testimony Whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS C. JOHNSON.
