COLD-STORAGE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application tiled September 20, 1906. Serial No. 335,462.
To ctZZ whom, it may COMO/3TH.
Be it known that we, NATImN II. DEVERS and EDWARD WILLLmis, citizens of the United States, residing at Vl ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cold- Storage Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in cold storage apparatus, and the main object of the invention, is the provision of a casing embodying an ice storage compartment, preferably above the storage compartment, a series of conduits bein so provided as to allow the cooled or colc air to descend into the storage compartment, at equal distances around the sides of the storage compartment.
The present apparatus is designed for the cold storage of beer or other aerated liquids, and also for refrigerating meats and the like, the apparatus being a built-up structure adapted to be built in any desired or convenient place; and maybe of any size or proportion, according to the purpose for which the apparatus is intended.
To attain these objects, the present invention consists of a cold storage apparatus, embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 1s a transverse vertical sectional view of a complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken on line wac Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing storage for beer kegs, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the trap.
Referring to the dra'wings,-the numeral 1 designates footers or concrete base, which is preferably below the frost line, and carries the concrete floor 2, which inclines slightly to one side. Supported upon this floor is the apparatus, which consists of the usual four walls, each of which is formed of vertical layer of hollow terra-cotta tiles or pipes 3, faced with a layer of cement topping or smooth tile 4, and another outer layer 5, of tiles or pipes, which provide a space 6, filled With a filling of crushed or pulverized cork 6, or other insulating material. Upon the outer face of the tiles or pipes 5, is placed a solid wall 7, which may be of any desired material, preferably a glazed or vitreous tile. The top 8, is composed of the inside layer 9,
of tile or cement topping, while the series of hollow rerra-cotta tiles or pipes 10, are held in place and supported by the cement con- CI'OLO girders 1.1, the whole being covered by cinder cement concrete 12, and cement topping 13.
Dividing the (it sing into an upper .ice compartment l t, and a lower cold storage conipartnient 15, is a concrete partition or lloor 16, having a cement topping 17, which inclines toward the same side as the lloor. In order to carry off the waste from the upper compartment, a drain 18, having an iron grating strainer is provided in the lloor 16, while a similar drain 19, is provided in the lloor 2. These drains are connected to the drain pipes 20 and 20, by means of the removable glass traps 21., the construction of which is clearly shown in Fig. 4. By this means the sediment is readily observed and the entire trap removed and cleaned. In order that the cold air will enter the lower compartment and be so disposed as to evenly distribute the same throughout the entire lower compartment, the four series of pipes or conduits 22, one series mounted in each wall, are provided. The mouths of these pipes enter the respective compartments above and. below the floor 16, and the distance above or below may be regulated accordingly as the cold air may be desired.
In each compartment is provided a door 23 and 2 1, which may be of any desired construction, and either swing or slide, as occasion requires without departing from the spirit of the invention.
As clearly shown in .Fig. 3, the waste drain water from the upper compartment is used to cool kegs of beer, the waste water being conveyed to the tank 25, which is so constructed as to contain the water and the kegs, a hoisting apparatus 26, being employed to facilitate the handling of the kegs.
The pipes or conduits 22, are preferably made of a vitreous material, so as not to corrode, that is they may either be made of vitreous lined terra-cotta or of glass, and the main portion of these pipes are mounted in the space 6, and surrounded by the cork filling 6 \Vhat is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a cold storage apparatus, the combination of a casing, the walls of which are made of two layers of hollow tile separated by a space extending from the bottom to the top of the casing, a filling of heat insulation within said space, a partition dividing the easin into an upper and a lower compartment, and conduits permitting communication between the compartments located in the space between the layers of tile equidistant apart around the wall, and having their ends projecting through the inner layer of tile into the casing above and below the partition, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a built-up cold storage apparatus, the combination of footers adapted to project below the surface, a casing having a concrete floor and a concrete top mounted thereon, and consisting of front, rear and side walls made each of two layers of hollow earthen tile separated by a space extending from the floor to the top, a filling of heat in sulation within said space, a concrete partition supported by the walls and separating the casing into an upper and a lower compartment, and conduits permitting communication between the compartments located in the space between the layers of tile in the walls, and each having their two open ends projecting through the inner layer of tile into the casing above and below, respectively, the partition, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
