To all who/rt it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WV. Larson, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and tate of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash locks, its object being to provide a simple and effective construction of lock in which the locking members are arranged upon the meeting rails of the sashes and lock both sashes against movement.
Another object is to provide means whereby the locking member upon the upper sash may be conveniently retracted to permit the sashes to be opened.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the meeting rails of the sashes and parts of the lock. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the latch member of the lock with the pawl thereof in retracted position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the keeper member of the lock.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the meeting rails of the upper and lower sashes. The latch member of the fastener is mounted upon the rail 1, and comprises a base plate 3 apertured at its ends for the passage of screws or other fastenings 4 to secure it to the rail. Rising from said plate is a pair of spaced parallel standards 5 integral there with and connected at their upper ends by a transverse pin 6. Pivotally mounted upon the pin is a pawl 7 having a head 8 eccentrically apertured for the passage of the pin and formed with a downwardly and forwardly projecting arm 9 and an upwardly projecting finger piece 10. The greater weight of the head 8 is in rear of the pivotal connection, and the arm 9 is, therefore, normally projected beyond the inner face of the rail 1 by gravity to engage the keeper member on the rail 2. A recess 11 is formed in the front edge of the plate 1 to permit the free end of the pawl to fold therein when it is desired to retract the pawl to allow the sashes to have free relative movement.
The keeper member comprises a plate 12 apertured at its ends for the passage of fastenings 13 to secure it to the upper surface of the rail 2. In the plate is formed an opening 13 at the outer edge of which is situated an upwardly projecting stop piece 14. When the said keeper member is formed of sheet metal this stop piece is made by slitting the plate and bending up the metal to simultaneously produce the opening and stop piece. The outer edge of the plate is provided with a down turned spur 15 to enter the rail 2 and add to the security of the fas tening. 'l he surface of the plate between the central portion of its outer edge and the opening 13 is depressed on an incline or beveled toward the opening, so that the free end of the pawl arm 9 may ride easily into and out of engagement with the keeper plate.
When the sashes are closed the free end of the pawl arm 9 lies immediately above the opening 13 in the plate 12 and locks both sashes against opening movement. If an attempt is made to lower the upper or raise the lower sash the arm 9 will project into the opening 13 and lock the sashes against movement. If through any cause the pawl arm should jump or be forced out of engagement with the opening, it will come into engage ment with the stop piece 14 and be held from further outward movement. By means of the "finger piece 10 the pawl may be retracted to seat within the recess 11 and allow the rails 1 and 2 to be moved past one another so as to permit either or both sashes to be opened.

The herein-described sash lock comprising a bracket adapted for application to the meeting rail of the upper sash, and comprising a base plate provided in its forward edge with a recess and having upwardly extending standards carrying a pivot pin, a gravityprojected pawl pivotally supported by said pin, said pawl being provided with a locking arm adapted to swing within the recess and normally arranged to project beyond the base plate and having a linger piece projeeting upwardly from the pivoted end of the pawl in line with the pin, and a keeper member comprising a flat horizontal plate adapted to be secured to the meeting rails of the lower sash, sa1d plate being provided with a vertlcal longitudinal openmg to receive the free end of the pawl, a beveled surface leading from its outer edge to the outer side of said opening, a stop for the pawl projecting Vertically at the inner edge of the opening, and a depending spur leading from the lower edge of the beveled face and adapted to be embedded in the sash.
