Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application tiled March 31,1906. Serial No. 309,094.
To all whom it mar/"concern:
Be it known that I,` CHARLES BERGMANN, a citizen of the burg, in thecounty of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented -certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Faucets,- of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to that class of valves, taps and the like'which are designed 'to automatically resume a closed position' after having been opened Jfor drawing off water or other liquid.
To this end the invention contemplates a simple and thoroughly practical construction of self-closing faucet which is positive and reliable in its action, While at the'samev time having an entire absence of packing or valve disks.
A further object is to provide an improved against leakage or waste of the fluid.
. With these and other objects in view which will more readily. appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists inthe novel construction, combination andarrangementsof parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. In the drawings-Figure 1 is a sectional faucet embodying'the invention, and illustrating a type of valve or draw-off device possessing special utility as a beer-tap. Fig. 2 is a modification of a horizontal orm'of tank-faucet or the like embodying the present invention.
i Like references designate corresponding arts in the several figures oi the drawings. In the preferable embodiment of the invention shown in Figj 1 of the drawings, the same includes in its general organization, a
1 provided with a smooth inteeter throughout. The said casing 1 may consist of a plain casting bored and reamed .out to Jform the slide-bore 2 and provided 3 in communicabore. The said inlet to the barrel tank or tion with the interior tube or neck is vfitted other liquid container for the purpose oi conducting the iiuid into the valve casing. The
l5o slide-bore 2 of the latter is designed to accommodate therein a reciprocal valve-plug 4 which is turned to a registering'sliding and non-leaking fit with the wall of the said bore 2, whereby extra packing valve disks or equivalent element are entirely dispensed 2 with. The said reciprocal valve-plug 4 is i provided therein with a longitudinal fluid i passage 5 opening through one end of the plug, and at an intermediate point in the )ody of the latter communicates with a side l port 6 adapted to be moved in and out of l register with the side casing ort 7 with which communicates the inlet tribe or neck 3 of the valve casing. The said valve plug 4 is Jurther provided for a portion of its length with a reduced guiding-stem 8 slidably working through the ing Anut 10, detachable screwed or otherwise fitted in the lower open discharging end of the casing 1. The said nut 10 also acts as a discharge nip le, and as an abutment for one end ot the re ractile closing spring 11 coiled about the stem 8 and whose other end exerts a closing pressure against the rest shoulder 12 'formed on the valve-plug at one end of the reduced stem 8.
The plug body 4 is formed in one side thereof with a longitudinal key-,way 13 receiving a retaining casing an serving to prevent the Valve from turning. At the same time the said key-way rovides a circulating passage for the air when the spring is compressed so that the air. may circulate into the top part of the casing and thereby avoid compression of the air in l the s ring receiving' space with a consequent inter 'erence with the free opening of' the valve.
At one end of the valve-plug is provided with a handle-stem 15 working through the i detachable casing-cap 16 at the upper end of the casing and having fitted thereon a suitable handle or hand-knob 17.
To open the valve, it is simply necessary to press th'e valve-plug inward to bring the ports l 6 and 7 in register. Upon the release of the hand pressure, the spring automatically car- 1 ries the valvelug to a closed position.
In the modification shown in Fig. exl actly the same construction and action of l parts is involved excepting that vthe valvecasing is arranged horizontally with the guide and abutment 10 formed integrally therewith and the inlet 1S provided at one end of guide opening 9 of a retaining being also provided with a side port,.a re'- .oiprocating valve .plugr slidably registering .a reduced guiding `stem sliding in the guide in the casing and the outlet 19 in one side, the l and side port, andin its external surface with latter being designed t0 register with the side port 6 of the Va1ve-p1ug- ,I circulatinggroove, 'a fixed retaining key em' What l'claim is` aging said key-way, and a, olosingsprin A self-closing faucet comprising a valve ou'sed within the casing and engaging the" casing having an interior slide-bore and provalve plug. l Y Videdvat one end with an open guide, said cas- In testimony whereof I hereunto ahX my 2o sign aturein the presencebf two witnesses.,
