Description

10.851.442 PATENTBD APR. 2s, 1907. P SGHLIGKER RMI. FASTENER.
APPLIUATION FILED PEB. 18.1907.
UNITED STATES FATEN T OFFICE.
RAIL-FASTEN ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aprn 23, 1907.
Application filed February 18,1907. Serial No. 358.110.
Be it known that I, FRANK SonLioKER, a i citizen of the United States of America, residing at I/Villock, inthe county of/Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inl vented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein t0 i the accompanying drawings. d
This invention relates to rail fasteners, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener for firmly holding a rail upon a tie and preventingl lateral displacement of the same.
My improved rail fastener is designed to l embrace the base and web portion of a rail, adding rigidity and strength to the rail and preventing the rail from creeping upon the ties.
The detail construction of my invention l will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference l designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in whiohz- 4 Figure 1 is a perspective View of the rail l fastener, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a plan of the fastener illustrating one of fthe pivoted fish bars thereof in an open position, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the fastener.
To put my invention into practice, I con- I struct my fastener of two end plates 1 having upwardly extending lugs 2. The end plates l are connected by straps 3, said straps being ,i provided with spike notches if.
Pivotally mounted between the pierced lugs 2 are fish bars or plates 5, said bars or l plates being provided with trunnions 6 adapted to engage in said pierced lugs. The fish bars or plates 5 have their outer l edges notched, as at 7, whereby when said i sh bars or plates are folded inwardly to embrace the base 8 and web portion 9 of a l rail 10, said notches 7 will register with the notches 4 of the straps 3.
Spikes 1l are driven through the notches 4 and 7 into the tie l2 supporting the rail 10. The heads of the spikes overlie the fish bars or plates 5 and firmly retain said bars or plates upon the base flanges 8 of the rail 10.
The end plates 1 serve to protect the edges of the tie 12 beneath the rail 10 While the fish bars 5 and the spikes 11 prevent lateral and vertical displacement of said rail.
What I claim and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is
l. The combination with a tie and a rail f mounted thereon, of end plates having. up-
wardly extending pierced lugs, notched straps connecting said end plates, fish bars or plates trunnioned in said pierced lugs, and adapted to embrace the base flanges and web portion of said rail, said fish bars or plates having notches formed therein adapted to register with the notches of said straps, and spikes extending through said notches into said tie and overlying said fish bars or plates.
2. In a rail fastener, the combination with a tie and a rail mounted thereon, of connected end plates adapted to embrace the sides of said tie, fish bars or plates trunnioned between said end plates and engaging the base flanges and 'we b portion of said rail, and spikes mounted in said tie and engaging said fish bars or plates.
3. In a rail fastener, the combination with a tie and a rail mounted thereon, of connected end plates adapted to embrace the sides of said tie, fish bars or plates trunnioned between said end plates and engaging the base flanges and web portion of said rail, and means carried by said tie for` holding said fislli bars or plates in engagement with said rai In testimony whereof I affix my signature the presence of two witnesses:
FRANK SCHLICKER.
