NEGKTIE FORMER AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed June 22,1906. Serial No. 322.831.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HAMILTON 1 NOONEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of WVestchester and State of New York, have invented 'ccrtain new and useful Improvements in Necktie Formers and Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for use in connection with what are known as four-inhand neckties or scarfs, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for use in connection with turndown collars so as to avoid the necessity of passing the tie or scarf around the neck, and on which the tie or scarf may be easily and conveniently formed and tied, and which may also be easily and securely connected with the collar and collar button and retained firmly in the desired position; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified on which various other forms of ties or scarfs may be made; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, con structed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompai nying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my im roved necktie former and holder; Fig. 2 a sit e view 5 thereof; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 butshowing a modification Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing one step in the process of tying a four-in-hand tie or scarf on the former and holder ,"F ig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing another step in the process of forming and tying the tie or scarf on i the holder; Fig. 6 a back view of the device but showing another step in the process of forming and tying the tie or scarf on the former and holder; Fig. 7 a front view showing the tie completely formed and tied on the former and holder; Fig. 8 a front view of another form of tie made on the former and holder shown in Fig. 3 F ig. 9 a back view of i the tie shown in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 a front view 1 similar to Figs. 7 and 8 but showing another form of tie made on the former and holder shown in Fig. 1; and, Fig. 11 a back view of the tie shown in Fig. 10.
an oblong spring frame a consisting of a top member a a bottom member a and end members a forming a longitudinal open space a through which, in practice, when a four-in-hand tie or scarf is used, said tie or scarf is passed in the operation of tying the i same as hereinafter described.
The opposite end portions of the main frame form spring wings which, in practice, are inserted under the turndown portions of the collar at the ends thereof, and the top part a of the main frame is bent forward slightly and provided centrally with a depending arm a preferably provided at its lower end with a ring a7, and .the top end portion of said arm is preferably provided with a triangular shield or keeper a". The bottom part a of the main frame is provided centrally with a downwardly directed bend a centrally of which is formed an upwardl directed loop a which opens downwardly and which, in practice, when the device is in operation, engages the shank of the collar button.
It will be observed that the arm a is set forwardly of the main frame a and of the bend a and loop a and is parallel with said frame, bend and loop.
In Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive I have shown the successive steps of connecting, tying and forming a four-in-hand tie or scarf 0n the former and holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this operation I take an ordinary four-inhand tie or scarf b and pass one end 12 thereof downwardly through the ring (L7. The other end 6 of the tie or scarf is then passed backwardly over the upper part of the left hand wing or loop of the main frame a and then downwardly and forwardly through said Wing or loop as clearly shown in Fig. 4, after which the end b is passed around the arm a of the former and holder as shown at I) in Fig. 5, and underneath the bottom part of the bend a and loop a as clearly indicated in Fig. 6, and said end is then passed up- :I wardly' through the right hand wing or loop of the main frame a and then forwardly and downwardly through or under the loop I) of the scarf as clearly indicated in Fig. 7. This operation completes the tie as shown in Fig. 7 and the loop I) may, as will be understood,
be drawn as tight as desired so as to make the top portion of the tie formed by said loop, or enclosed by said loop, substantially round in lIO form if desired, it being understood that in this way, and by means of my improved former and holder a four-in-hand tie or scarf may be formed and tied exactly in the same manner, or so as to give the appearance common to, said ties or scarfs when the latter are passed around the neck and tied in the usual lnan'ner.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing I have shown another style of tie or scarf made on the former and holder shown in Fig. 3, the only difference between the former and holder shown in Fig. 3 and that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being that the ring portion a at the bottom of the arm a is bent outwardly or forwardly at right angles to said arm. v
The scarf or tie shown in Figs. 8 and 9 may bemade of any desired material and in practice one end of the material is passed downwardly through the ring a and the other end thereof folded around the main frame a, and then downwardly through said ring a, that part of the material of the tie or scarf above the ring a being folded or draped around the top portion of the arm a.
and the main frame so as to completely cover said parts, the upwardly directed loop memher a" being always left free as shown in Fig. 9 so that it may be connected with the shank portion of the collar button in the usual manner, and in theform of construction shown in Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive it will be seen, as indicated in Fig. 6, that the bottom part of the main frame and the loop member a)" are left free and uncovered in the tying or forming of a four-in-hand tie-or scarf on my improved former and holder.
In Figs. 10 and 11 I have shown another style of tie or scarf which may be made on my improved former and holder as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 10 being affront and Fig. 11 a' back view of said tie or scarf, and a little practice will enable any one to make the tie or scarf shown in Figs. 10 and 11, as well as many other forms of ties or scarfs.
In practice the end members a of the main frame are passed under the turndown end portions of a turndown collar at the front and the loop member a is sprung up wardly and conneeted with the shank of the collar button in thc manner of other devices of this class. It will be observed that the .distance between the loop member a? and bottom portion of the main frame a operates to securely hold the device 111 connection with the collar and the collar button when once attached thereto, said spring force serving to force the loop member a downwardly forced upwardly and the spring force of the i and cause it to closely engage the shank o the collar button.
The arm a of the device serves as an aid in the forming and tying of the tie or scarf on the former and holder, and also serves to hold the tie or scarf in proper position at all times and to prevent the same from slipping laterally on, or in, the former and holder- My invention is not limited to the, exact form of the arm a herein shown and described nor to the use of the ring a at the lower end thereof, but I prefer to employ the said ring for the reason that it aids in holding one end of the tie or scarf in the operation of forming and tying the same when "what is known as a four-in-hand tie or scarf is employed, but any depending arm eonnected Wlllll the top part of the main frame in the position of the arm a. and extending down wardly the necessary distance would aid in the forming and tying of the scarf and prevent the lateral movement thereof on the main frame when so formed and.tied.
Having fully described my inve11tion,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. A necktie former-and holder, comprising an oblong spring frame the top part of which is provided centrally with a forwardly set and downwardly directed arm, and the bottom part of which is provided centrally wiib a dmmwardly directed bend having an upwardly (llIC-(Jl.(-(l loop which opens downwardly, said arm extending below said bend, and the iop partof said arm being provided with a triangular shield.
.2. A necktie ,former and holder, composed of spring wire and comprising an oblong spring frame \heiop part of which is provided centrally with a forwardly set and downwardly directed arm,and the bottom part of which is provided centrally with an upwardly ('llI'PCtOd loop which opens downwardly, said arm extending below said loop and being provided at its lower end will] a ring.
3. Alnecktieformer and holder comprising an oblong spring frame ihe top part of which is provided cemrally with a forwardly set and downwardly dirccied arm, and ihe bottom' part of which is provided centrally ill) a downwardly (llI'OCLCd bend having an upwardly dilQCtGd loop which opens donnwardly, the space between the top and hotlom part of said frame being free and 1mobs'lructed, and the lower end of said arm being provided it h a ring.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 20th day of June 1906.
