and which consequently,-require to be very strongly and solidly constructed, in order to support the heavy loads and withstand the rough usage to which they are subjected.
Heretoiore, reels for the described, and other similar purposes, have been constructed so far as I am aware, either wholly of wood, or partly of wood and artly of cast iron. Such reels are necessari and consequently clumsy, satisfactory in practice.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of reels of the class described b making the heads, which are necessarily 0 large diameter and must be capable of supand do not prove porting a great weight, out of sheet-metal,-

heads, and to impart great rigidity and stiffness to the latter as well as to the whole structure. The heads are also rovided with means whereby the reel may e mounted on bearings, so that it can be rotated, as for instance, while the wire or cable is being wound onto, or unwound from the reel.

My im roved reel consists primarily in a hollow cy indrical hub 1,made of sheet metal,
' pzeferably steel, the same beingformed by nding a plate of suitable size into cylindrical form, the longitudinal seam between e same being preferably secured by a butt-riveted joint, shown in Fig. 2, the same-comprising a longitudinal strip 2, secured to both ed ace of the seam by rivets 4. The edges or )eripheries of the disks may be left flat, but i prefer to turn the same over 1 to form aflange 13, which serves to strengthen i the reel as well as to'form a bearing surface for the same when it is not pivotally supported.
