Be it known that I, CnAnLEs BRENT, residing at Brandon, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improve-v ment in Methods of Extinguishing Fire, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
It has been customary heretofore in fire extinguishing apparatus to use carbonic acid gas in a compressed state as a medium by which water or other fire extinguishing agents may be projected upon, or driven to, a fire or burning material. In these instances some free gas might be carried with the water to assist it in its fire extinguishing characteristics. In most of theseinstances, however, there has been merely a combination of free gas and water so that upon the setting free of the stream of liquid, or fluid, thefree gas is immediately liberated into the open air and before the stream of water has reached the fire, with the result that under the most favorable circumstances a very small amount of gas, if any, actually reaches the fire, so it might be said that in all of these instances, 1
as before stated, the gas is simply used as a medium for driving the liquid to the fire. It is a fact, as deduced from actual practice, when water is mixed with carbonic acid gas it will absorb such gas in time to the point of saturation, but the element of time is abso lutely necessary in order to effectively saturate thewater with such gas. In fact, in practice it has been found to take several hours before the gas and the water are in solution and even then the water is not saturated to the point where it will hold any great amount of gas and certainly not enough for eifective fire fighting.
It is the primary fact of this invention therefore to provide a method of extinguishing fire by carryin to such firethe greatest possible amount 0% carbonic acid gas and to carry it in a way which is thoroughly practical and which will be commercially useful.
This invention therefore relates to a method of extinguishing fire by the use of a saturated solution of water and carbonic acid gas whereby the water will act as a conveyor for the gas so that the greatest possible amount of such gas will be taken directly to the flames or burning material and there set free to form a blanket over such burning ma- Specification of Letters Patent. terials by reason of the heat acting upon the water and causing the rapid liberation of the gas which has up to this time been in solution. This blanketing of the fire is well understood when the fact that carbonic acid gas is heavier than air, is taken into consideration.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the method set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Any suitable apparatus may be used for practicing the method, but in the drawing I have shown one construction which meets the requirements very effectively.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a water tank which is adapted to be supplied with water to any desired point. This tank 1 is provided with asuitable discharge pipe 3, leading to the bottom of the tank 1 and has a valve 4 and a hose pipe 5. Connected to the dome of this tank 1 is a pipe 6 provided with a valve 7 and leading tb a regulating or pressure reducing valve 8 provided with a gauge 9 for indicating the pressure of the gas which is to be supplied to the tank 1. A pipe 10 is connected to the regulating valve and is provided with a valve 11. Another pipe 12 leads from this pipe 10 to the plug 13 of the gas container 14. This plug 13 is provided with a valve 15. The gas container 14 is preferably filled with carbonic acid gas in liquified form, whereby it will have great cait is used. As suggested the gas is supplied to the tank 1 while the extinguisher is not in use, at which time the valve 4 in the pipe 3 is closed, so that the gas is free to act upon the water and will be absorbed by the same to the point of solution, so that when a fire occurs the extinguisher will be ready to supply a completely saturated solution of water and carbonic acid gas.
Having described my invention, I claimi 1. A method of extinguishing fire, which consists in projecting upon the burning ma; terials a saturated solution of carbonic acid gas and water.
2. A method of extinguishing fire, which subjected to carbonic acid gas a sufficient len th of time to form a saturated solution of car onic acid gas and water upon the burning materials.
3. A method oi extinguishing fire, which consists in subjecting Water in an enclosed receptacle to the action of carbonic acid gas to form a saturated solution of carbonic acid gas and water under pressure, and projecting such solution upon the burning materials.
\ 4. A method of extinguishing fire, which consists in treating water With a constant supply of carbonic acid gas under pressure to form a saturated solution of carbonic acid gas and water and projecting such solution upon the burning materials.
5. The herein described method of extinguishing fire which consists in projecting a liquid thoroughly saturated with a fire extinguishing gas upon the burning mlaterials ,wherebythe liquid may act as a conveyor for carrying the gas to the fire. I
