DHAFTWREGGlN-L Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23.93, 196'?.
Application filed July lLBQILQOB.' Serial No. SZGAlQ.
'.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, `JOHN OSCAR N EIKIRK, a citizen 'of the UnitedStates, residing at Chicago, in the county of. Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andv use- -fl11 .Im` rovements in Draft-Rigging, of
' Incarr which t e following is a specification.
My invention relates to draft ri ging L adapted to be -used in anyusual form o rail- `way. car; and has as an o ect the sim lification of the construction of such evices, whereby reat strength and durability issecuied and the possibilit of the parts of the device becoming dissem led or broken is decreased.
My invention further relates to the details of construction hereinafter described and.
claimed; and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a lan of the device with the supporting mem ers shown broken away; Fig. 2', a section ofthe device taken upon the line'2` of Fig. l showing the means of attachdevice taken upon the line 3 ofFig. 1; Fig. 4, a perspective drawing of the spring-seat Fig. 5, a sectional elevation of a referred modiiication of my invention 5 and *'ig. 6, a,
detail sectional view, `taken upon the line 6 of Fig. 5.
` g out my invention--as shown in Fig. i* provide the Slotted draft-beams b ortedjat one end upon the bolster c and supp1 I at t e other upon the'end sill d. Extending horizontally through the slots e, f, g and h, in said draft-beams, are the metal keys t and j having secured between them the usual twin sprin s c and l, by means of the spring-seats m and n, which are provided with the slots o and p" into which the said keys closely iit.
In. the usual manner I provide the inclosing yoke gsecured at one end to the draft-bar r' and so arranged that the spring seats m and n iit snugly. against its inner shoulders at each end.
In Figs. 5 and 6 i haveshown a preferred modiiication in which the .similar draftbeams, one only of which is shown, areprovided with metallic braces s upon their inner faces, such braces being provided with slots registering with the previouslymentioned slots e, f, g and hin -the draft-beams. `The Vbrace here illustratedgisdprovided at its for ward end with an upwa'r y extending shoul- -der t adapted to en age the end sill d in such manner that the 'orward thrust 'uponthe brace will be directly communicated with the end sill, and at its rearward end with the broadened portion u adaptedto abut against the bolster to directly communicate rearward thrustupon the draw-bar through the said brace to the bolster. This brace is also provided with extensions o forming an inner casing for the portion of the slots upon which the keys are adapted to slide-and alsoforming solid shoulders for the keys, whereby the pull or thrust upon such keys is communicated directly to the end sill or the bolster, as the case may be. cured -to the draft-beams by a plurality of bolts w which extend through the draftbeams.
When the draft-bar 'r isplaced under tensionfrom the draft-bar of the adjacent `car suiiicent to overcome the normal force of the springs c and l, the key j is caused to slide forward in the slots g and 7L and the rearward end of the draw-bar is caused to slide away from its contactwith the forward spring seat m. When the draft-bar is undercompression suflioi'ent to deflect the springs k and l, the key i' is caused to slide rearwardly in the slots e andf and the inner face of the yoke g is forced from its contact with the spring. s eat n at the point It will be noted that by this construction the strain, whether it be tension or compres sion, falls directly, through the medium of the keys, upon the extreme faces of the rojections o of the brace s on the interior o the l'slots c, f, g'and h, thus applying the-force through the medium of suclibraces to the draft-beams to which the braces are tightly secured bythe bolts w, and thence to the end sill and bolster. The braces, however, are so shaped as to also directly apply the force exerted upon them through their abutting end,
the end sill and bolsters, thus furnishing very positive `and rigid structure. between the keys and the car body.
In this speciiication only such parts oi the illustrationhave been described asit is thou ht necessary to clearly disclose the invention and to enable it to be practiced by those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that certain arts herein sh own and described may be of ot er form without departing from the scope of. my invention. lf cla1m: l.; ln a draft-rigging for railway cars, the
combination with an: end sill and bolster,
This brace is also rigidly se- ICO IXO
slotted'draft-beams, ,braces secured to such beams andabutting the end sill and bolster and having slots therein registering with the slots in the draft-beams, keys mounted between the draft-beams and extending into the'slots therein, a spring between said keys, a coupler, and means for connecting the keys to the coupler.
2.' In a draft-rigging for railway cars,` the combination of slotted draft-beams, keys movably supported in such slots, metallic brace plates secured to the draft-beams and abutting the end sill and bolster, portions thereon extending into such slots and formn ing shoulders therein against which said keys normally abut, a coupler, and means, for transmitting the thrust up'onsuch coupler to such shoulders.
3. In a draftrigging for railway cars, the
combination of slotted draft-beams, keys movably supported within said slots, metallic brace plates secured to the draft-beams and abutting the end sill and bolster, portions thereo extending into such slots and forming shoulders and wear plates for such keys, means for normally forcing the keys against such shoulders, and means for normally connecting the keys to a coupler.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars the combination with an end sill and bolster of, slotted draft beams; keys supported by the draft beams having sliding movement in the slots, a coupler, a yoke secured to the coupler and embracing the keys, a spring between the keys and within the yoke and slotted brace plates secured to the draft beams, said brace plates having at their forward ends portions abutting adjacent sides of the end sill and attheir rearward ends portions abutting the bolster.
5. ln a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with end sill and bolster, of slotted draft beams secured thereto, slotted metallic brace plates secured to the draft beams and formed with portions extending into the slots in the draft beams. and upwardly extending end portions abutting the end sill and bolster, keys carried by the brace plates and having sliding movement in the slots therein, a coupler, a yoke secured to the coupler and embracing the keys, spring seats esr secured to the keys within the yoke, and a Y spring between such spring seats.
