Patent 812,912, dated February 20, 1906, and has for its object to provide means for operating the stop-motion of the machine" adapted to be controlled by the pa erwrinkling between the feeding device an the'cut- P p breaking between the paper-carrying roll and the feeding-device. 1n the machine shown in said patent the web of pa er taken from the paper-carrying roll is fed orward by suitable feeding-devices to a cutting-device, and the latter operates to sever the web of paper, and the severed end portion serves as and constitutes the wrapper which is to be used in wrapping the orange or other article.
It sometimes happens that when the paper is fed forward to the cutting-device it does not pass freely between the cooperating members of said device. and in such event it wrinkles between the feeding-device and cutting-device, and a wrapper is not produced. It also sometimes happens that when the web of paper breaks at some point between the paper-carrying roll and the feeding-device, and in such event no wrapper 1s produced, and in either case it is very desirable to instantly stop the machine.
My present invention com rehends the provision of an electro-magnet or operating the stopsnotion to sto the machine, and means for operating the circuit of said electro-niagnet adapted to be controlled by the paper wrinklim beti'veen the feeding-device and cutting-device, and means for also operating the circuit of said electro-magnet adapted to be operated by the breaking of'the web of paper-carrying roll and Figure 1 shows in side elevation a sufficient portion of a wrapping-machine to illustrate my invention, having a stop-motion and.

The stop-motion of the machine is substantially the same as shown inLetters Patent 812,912, aforesaid, and consists of a lever 217, pivoted to the frame, to the extremity of which is loosely connected an upright bar 218, bearing at its lower end a wedge-block 219, which projects laterally therefrom'and which is moved into and out of engagement with one end of a short horizontal slide-bar 220, having a shoe or end piece 221 at its opposite end which is formed or provided with a curved engaging-face. The'short bar 220 slides in a stationary bearing rovi'ded for it. The sliding bar 220 is moved orward in a direction toward the loose driving-wheel 222 by a spring 224, and is held against rearward motion by the wedge-block when said wedge block is brought into engagement with the rear end thereof for the purpose of stopping the machine, otherwise it is not held against rearward motion. The sliding-bar serves as a yielding restraining-device for the clutchmechanisi'n, and the wedge block serves as the controlling-device for the stop-motion.

When the arm 217 is raised the wed ge-block will be likewise raised and will engage the vielding re-' straining-device and hold it and check further movement ofthe clutch-arm, and when said arm 217 is permitted or caused to fall the wedgeblockwill be removed from engagement with the restraining-device and the clutch-arm will be permitted to pass by it.
A cam 250 is pivoted to the frame which has a hand-piece 251 for turning it, which latter serves as the starting-lever, and said camis located close tothe wedge-block so that the wedge-block will occupy a position between said cam and the rear end of the sliding bar, and the cam thus supports against lateral movement and guides the lower end of the vertical bar 218, and said cam has a projection which is adapted to enter a slot 252 formed at the lower end of the bar 218, which is made long enough to provide for an independent movement of said bar, and when said cam isturned, as by lifting the lever 251, the bar 218will be drawn down and the yielding restraining-device will be disengaged and the 'cIutch arm relieved to thereby start the machine. When the ma-' chine is thus started the cam will be immediately returned to. its normal position by-the weight of the hand-lever, and 'the wedge block will remain' in its lowermost position by gravity until positively raised. When the arm 217 is raised to lift thefwedge-block, the latter will resume its position at the rear end of the sliding-bar, and as soon as the end piece 221 on said bar is engaged by the clutch arm, said bar will be moved rearwardly, and

Thus it will be seen that whilethe tendency is for the to close the circuit and thereby energize the electro -magnet and lift the arm 217.
One of'the circuit operating devices may consist of an ordinary press-button m", ad apted to be operated by hand, and located at any part of the machine. Theother circuit operating device is herein shown as adapted to be operated by two different means, namely, by the paper wrinkling bet-ween the feeding-device and the cutting-device, and by the web of paper breaking between the paper-carrying-roll and the feeding-device i represents the paper-cairying roll; 41 and 42 represent thefeeding-rolls, which are operated intermittingly to feed forward the paper from the paper-ca ingroll to the cutting device, and which, t erefore, constitute the feeding-device for-thepaperj" and-306 represems a knife, which-is herein shown as a vertically reciprocating blade. 'Between the bite of the feedingrolls 41, 42,'and the cutting-device aflat bed 302 is provided over which the paper is fed. The upper feed-roll 41 is-held pressed down by a pressure-block 50, bearing upon it at a point intermediatexits length, and said .block 50 is set in a suitable frame and is thrust down by a spring 51, see Fig. The block 50 has a stem passing up through the top of the frame to the upper end of which a cap 52 is secured which maybe engaged by the fingers to lift the pressure-block and disengage it from the feeding-roll. The stem has a laterally projecting in 53, which, when the pressure-block is raised passes through a slot in the top of the frame, and then by turning said stem said pin may be brought into position above the top of the frame to engage therewith when; the stem is released and thereby hold the pressure-block elevated. The frame bearing the pressure-block is pivoted at 54 to the machine frame, and may v qbe'swung on its pivot to thereby. permit the upper feed-roll i-o'be removed from 11-5 bearings. The frame has a lat-erally extended arm 55 at the extremity of which a contactscrew 56 is secured, which forms the stationary member of the circuit-operating-device, one of the circuit-wires being attached to said screw. This member is stationarily support ed in a predetermined position by the frame whenthe pressure-block, borne bysaid frame, is in engagement with the feed-roll, said pres+ sure-block, therefore, serving as a locking device for holding the frame in such position. An arm 60 is pivoted at 61 which is curved in the direction of its length and extends over the upper feed-roll and terminates at a point between the feed-roll and the knife,a short distance above the flat bed over which the aper is fed. This arm falls by gravity unt it strikes a reduced portion of the up er feedroll or some other fixed stop which imits its downward movement. The paper is fed forward by the feed-rolls to the cutting-device beneath the extremity of said arm, butif the paper shouldvnot be correctly fed forward it wi l wrinkle between the feed-rolls and cutting-device, as shown in Fig. 6, and the wrinkled portion-thereof willengage the end of the arm 60 and lift it. The arm bears a contact 62 which is adapted to close upon the end of the contact-screw 56, to thereby close the circuit of the electro-magnet m, and one of the circuit wires is connected to the pivotshaft of said arm to provide a path for the current. Thus if the paper should not be fed correctly to the cutting device .and consequently should wrinkle between the feed- I rolls and the cutting-device, the arm 60,
which serves as the circuit-operating-lever, will be lifted, and the contacts 62, 56 closed, to thereby close the circuit of the electromagnet m, which, upon being energized will operate the stop motion and stop the machine. Also pivoted at 61 is an arm which extends rearwardly, and bears at its extremit a flat bar 71, of any suitable length, which rests by gravity upon the web of paper back of the feed-rolls, that is to say, between the feed-rolls and the paper-carrying-rolls, and is held in elevated osition by the web of paper as it is being fed forward by the feed-rolls,
but if said web of paper should break the arm 70.will fall by gravity, being no longer supported in elevated position. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a paperfeeding-device, a paper-cutting-device to which the paper is e by the feeding-device, a stop-motion for the machine, an electro-magnet for operating it, a circuit for said electro-magnet, an operatingdevice for said circuit comprising a stationscribed, a single circuit-operatingdevice may I arily supported member, and'a pivoted arm be employed which is adapted to be operated lbearing a contact which serves as the movable member, said arm occupying a position between the feeding-device and cutting-device and terminating close to the paper which is fed forward by the feeding-device to the cutting-device, to be engaged and lifted by said paper wrinkling between said devices, substantially as described.

Ina wrapping machine, the combination of a paper-feeding-device, a pa er-cutting-device to which the paper is fe by the feeding-device, a stop-motion for the machine, an electro-magnet for operating it, a circuit for said electro-magnet, a circuit-0perating-device comprisinga stationary member and a movable member, the latter overlying the paper between the feeding-device and the cutting-device and adapted to be engaged and lifted by the pa er wrinkling between said devices, a movable frame bearing the stationary member and a locking-device for holding said frame in a position for the two members of the circuit-operating-device to cooperate, substantially as described.

In a wrapping machine, the combination of a paper-feeding-device, a paper-cutting-device to which the paper is fed by the feeding-device, a stop-motion for the machine, an electro-magnet for operating it, a circuit for said electromagnet, a circuit-operating-device comprising a stationary member and a movable member, the latter overlying the paper between the feeding-device and the cutting-device, and adapted to be engaged and lifted by the paper wrinkling between said devices, a movable frame bearing the stationary member, and a lockin device, engaging the upper feed-roll, for hol ing said fra me in proper position for the two members of the circnit-operating-device to cooperate, substantially as described.
7 In a wrapping machine, the combination of a stop-motion for the machine, a starting lever for operating said stop motion to start the machine, an electro-magnet for operating said stop motion to stop the machine and to bring one of the cooperating members thereof into frictional engagement with the-starting lever, by which it is held and an operating device for the circuit of said clcctro-magnet which is controlled by the paper, substantially as described.

In a wrapping machine, the combination of a stop-motion for the machine having a controllingdevice, a starting lever for operating said controlling-device to start the machine, an electro-magnet for operating said controlling-device to stop the machine and to move it into position to be engaged by the starting lever and an operating-device for the circuit of said electro-magnet which is controlled by the paper, substantially as described.

In a wrapping machine, the combination of a stop-motion for the machine having a controlling-device, a starting lever for operating said controlling-device to start the machine, an electro-magnet for operating said controlling-device to stop the machine and to move it into position to beengaged by the starting lever, a circuit operating-device for the circuit of said electro-magnet, and an operating-device for said circuit operating-device ada ted to be lifted by the paper wrinkling, su stantially as described.

In a wrapping machine, the combination of a stop-motion for the machine having a controlling-device, a starting lever for o erating said controlling-device to start t e machine, an electro-magnet for operating said controlling-device to stop the machine and to move it into position to be engaged by the starting lever, a circuit operating-device for the circuit of said electro-magnet and an operating device for said circuit operating-device which rests u on the web of paper and is adapted to fall y gravity when the web of paper breaks, substantially as described.

In a wrapping machine, the combination of a stop-motion for the machine having a controlling-device, a starting lever for operating said controlling-device to start the machine, an electro-magnet for operating said controlling-device to stop the machine and to move it into position to be engaged by the starting lever, a circuit operating-device for the circuit of said electrO-magnet, an operating-device for said circuit operating-device adapted to be lifted by the paper wrinkling and another operating-device for said circuit operating device which rests upon the web 0 paper and is adapted to fal by gravity when the web of paper breaks, substantially as described.
