Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented April 23, 19 07.
si iioatim filed February 10, 1905. Serial No. 245,022.
To all whom, it 771/04 oncern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ Josnr HUGO I MAXIMILIAN BERBERICH, a citizen of Geri many, residing at Kiel, Germany, have inparatus for Mechanically Mixing or Combining Liquids and other Fluid Substances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for mechanically mixing or combining liquids and other fluid substances. The apparatus may be used for combining skim milk with oils and fats to form fodder, for mixing salves, for mixing fats and milk to form margarin, for combining watery, oily, fatty In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mixing apparatus; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section t ereof on line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detail side view of the grooved plug, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal sectionthrough the preliminary mixing body.
To a pipe 14 is connected a socket 15 pro vided. with a lateral branch 16 through which are discharged the liquids, after they have been thoroughly 'mixed. A spindle v17. passes through the end of socket i5 and is tightened by means of a stuffing box 18. A plate-2O secured to socket 15 by bolts 19, is providedwith an inner screw thread for receiving the screw-threaded portion of spindle 17, on the rear end of which is mounted a hand wheel 21. In front of spindle 17 there is mounted in pipe 14, a cylindrical plug 22 having a coned front end 22*, such end being ground against a conical seat 14 of pipe 14. The cylindrical body of the plug is provided with one or more screw threads orspiral grooves 22 The plug is. adjustably held The screw thread or threads 22 form in pipe 14, one or more passages through which the liquids are made to pass. These liquids cause the plug 22 .to rotate, so that the liquids passing as narrow as possible, are triturated between the inner wall 14 of pipe 14, and plug 22, this trituration naturally effecting a thorough mixing of the liquids, so .that separation of the mixture into its constituent parts is prevented.
With fats, or fatty or thick substances, the operation must be carried on at a temperature at which the fats or other substances are very fluid. With milk this temperature should be at least 50. C., but must not exceed to (1., as otherwise the albumen would coagulate, which would render the mechanical mixing difficult.
In' order to effect a still more perfect and intimate mixture or combination of the liquids, they may bepassed over the surface of a body 41 arranged in pipe 14 in front of plu 22. This body is provided with any desire number of projections 42, preferably formed by one or more intersecting right and left screw threads. After passing this body, the liquid is split up and finally mixed and combined by plug 22.
What I claim is:
- 1. In an apparatus for mixing liquids, the combination of a pipe having a coniform seat, with an enclosed rotatable plug having a cylindrical threaded section engaging the pipe, and a coniform section engaging the seat, substantially as specified.
I 2.; In an apparatus for mixing liquids, a pipe and means for forcing a liquid through said pipe combined with an enclosed body 'rovided with intersecting right and lef iiand threads, substantially as specified.
3. In a machine for mixingliquids, the combination of a pipe withan enclosed rotatable grooved plug having a coned end, an independent body having projections and arranged in front of the plug, and means for conveying liquids under pressure to the pipe,
substantially as specified.
Signed by me at Li'lbeck, Germany this 25th day of November 1904.
