Specincation of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23,l 1907'.`
l Application filed December 13, 1906. Serial No. 347.624.
To alt whom t may concern:
. Be it known that I, ANDREW WErss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of 0h10, have invented new and useful Im.
provements in Washboards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to washboards and has for its object to provide improved means for preventing water from running behind kthe face plate of theboard, and also for preventing the collection of dirt between thel face late and back;
A urther object of the invention is to provide improved means for holding the top edge of the corrugated face plate, so Ias to prevent possible injury to the hands of the 4-4, Fig. 3.
Referring specificallyto the drawings, the frame o f the Washboard consists of side pieces 6, a head board 7, a top rail 8, and a bottom bar 9, all secured together .by nailing or dove-tailing or in any other suitablemanner. The` feet of the side pieces are preferably rounded as indicated at 1.0 so as to have no sharp corners to tear the clothes and to allow the board to be more easily moved around.
The inner sides or faces of the side pieces`6 are grooved to receive the edges ofthe corru-V gated metal faceplate 11, and also recessed or mortised at the ends of said groove to receive the ends of the bottom bar 9 and a top bar 12, which latter is located just below the lower edge of the head board 7. The corrugated metal. plate is supported by a plurality of longitudinal back bars 13, the endsof which are set in rebates 14 in the edges of thetop and bottom bars. These bars 13 are also supported at the middle by a middle cross bar 15 the ends of which are set inmortises in the Aformed as stated, serves side pieces 6 and which have recesses at 15 f through which the lengthwise bars 13 extend.
At the upper end of the face plate 11 is a guard or retaining plate consisting of a piece of sheet metal indicated at 16 which lies over orV upon the upper edge of `and serves to hold said plate down against the top bar 12, the lower edge of the plate 16 being fitted into the upper corrugation in the face plate 11 so that said edge will not catch the hands or the clothes during the act of rubbing. The side edges of the plate 16 are set in the grooves in the side pieces 6. At the top of the face plate the guard 16`is folded upon itself at 17, formlng an up-standing and .the face plate .11
outwardly projecting flange which serves to retain soap placed uponfthe `head board 7. The iiange is perforated at 18 to allow water to flow from the soap holder down onto the front of the board. From the flange the plate 16 is bent to extend toward the back o'f the board and through the slit or space between the head board 7 and the top bar 12, and the back edge of said plate is then turned up at 19 to fit behind the board 7, extending up behind said board asufficient distance to prevent water from' fiowing throu h behind the head board. Any water w ich ma?r y splash upon the front of the head board Wi be collected in the plate at the bottom thereof-and escape through the o enings 18 onto the front of the face plate. his will prevent water'leaking throughthe board and wetting the clothes of the washwoman.
It will. be seenthat the plate 16, bent and to hold the upper edge of the corrugated face plate,v and also to. form a soa holder at the bottom of the head board, an also to form a shield which prevents leakage through behind the head board. The skeleton back or constructionv produced by the bars behind the face plate prevents the collection of dirt, asbetween the ace plate and the ordinary solid back in common use.
I claim: 1. A Washboard having a head board, a top bar below the same, with a narrow openingr therebetween, a face plate the top edge of, late and extends behind the head board and which rests upon the bar, and a guard plate Iias a perforated flange under the said board, which laps the said edge of the face plate and forming a soap holder. extends through said opening between the I In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 lower edge of the head board and top bar and name to this specification in the presence of 15 up behind said board, and in contact 'with the two subscribing Witnesses.
said edge and the baek of the board. ANDREW WEISS.
2. A washboard having a head board, a Witnesses: 'face plate supported below the same, and a JOHN A. BOMMHARDT,
1o guard plate which laps the top of the face EDITH D. COMER.l
