To all whom it TILKI/Z/ concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GoonsnLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fairiield, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay, Wood, and Stock Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in racks for wagons, and has for its special obj ect to provide a simple, durable and efficient construction of this kind which may be readily converted into a hay, stock, or wood rack.
The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon box with my improved construction attached thereto, one side being positioned to form a stock rack and the other side positioned to form a hay rack, and Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are end elevations of the rack sides with the same in the positions of a hay, wood and stock rack, respectively.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a wagon-box, the bottom of which is provided at each side of the box with a plurality of lateral extensions 2, each having a socket 3 therein.
Each rack side comprising my invention consists of a plurality of brackets 4, to the upper end of each of which, as at 5, is pivoted an arm 6, which is supported in adjusted position relative to its bracket by bracing-bars 7 7. Each bar 7 is pivoted at one end to the associated arm 6 and has its other end secured to the bracket by a bolt 8, which passes through a slot 9 therein. The slots 9 are disposed longitudinally of the brackets and have their upper ends hook-shaped, thus forming two seats 9 and 9 in different horizontal planes upon which the bolts 8 may rest, whereby the arms 6, and slats or bars 10 secured thereto and forming a rack side, may
be supported at different angles to the sides l of the wagon-box to more advantageously support a load according to its nature, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The brackets 4 are detachably secured to the wagon-box by providing their upper ends with the hooked portions 11 adapted to engage the upper edges of the box sides, and their lower ends with tenons or projections 12 adapted to fit in the sockets 3 in the extensions 2 of the box. WVhen in upright position the rack sides are so retained by any suitable means as the hooks 13, which are pivoted to the bracing-bars 7 and are adapted to engage the upper edge of the box side, as shown at the left of Fig. l and in Fig. 4.
14 14 represent ladders or end portions of the rack, which are attached in any suitable manner to the ends of the wagon-box.
As shown at the right of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2 the racks are in their lowest position, that is, with the bolts 8 resting in the seats 9, as when adapted to carry hay; Fig. 3 shows the same in intermediate position with the bolts Sresting in the seat 9 whereby to form a wood rack, while at the left of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 4 the same are shown in upright position or as stock racks.
It is thus apparent that I have provided a simple and strong construction of rack which may be easily and quickly secured to or removed from a wagon-box, or readily placed in any of the three positions of adjustment relative thereto as the condition and nature of the load to be carried may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A device of the class described, comprising brackets adapted to be detachably secured to a wagon box, said brackets each being provided with a vertically disposed elongated slot having its upper end formed in hook-shape to provide seats at both terminals thereof, arms pivoted to said brackets, slats secured to the arms, and bars pivoted at one end to said arms and provided at their other end with means for operating in said slots and seating in one or the other terminal thereof.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising brackets provided with hooked portions adapted to engage the edge of the side of a wagon body and projections adapted to .vided with vertically disposed slots having :[it in sockets in extensions secured to the wagon body, said brackets also being protheir upper ends angled to form seats at such ends corresponding to the seats at the lower ends of the slots, arms pivoted to said brackets, slats secured to said. arms, and bracing bars ivoted at one end to said arms and pro vided at their other end with devices for seating in one or the other of the slot terminals, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising brackets adapted to be detachably secured to the sides of a wagon body, said brackets being provided with hook-shaped slots forming terminals seats in dilierent horizontal planes, arms ivoted to said brackets, slats secured to sai arms, bracing bars piv oted at one end to said arms and provided at their other end with devices for engaging l said seats in said brackets, and devices on said bracing bars for engaging the sides of the l wagon body to retain said arms in an upright position, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described, comprising brackets fashioned to be detachably secured to a wagon box and provided with hook-shaped slots the ends of which termi-v nate to form seats in different horizontal planes, arms pivoted to the brackets, slats carried by the arms, and means cooperating with the arms and slotted portions of the brackets to maintain the arms and slats in different positions of adjustment relative to the bracket said means exerting a downward thrust upon the slot seats.
