Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented April 23, 1907.

Application filed November 16, 1906. Serial No. 343,668.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAES H. COFFMAN, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at -Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State side, seat and back members of said chair,

may be separately upholstered and when these parts are fastened together, the tacking which secures the upholstering in position will be invisible.

A further object of the invention is the provision of achair constructed in the manner described, together with improved means for securing the several parts of said chair together.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be Set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a chair constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section upon line x x of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the joint between the back and one of the Side members, Fig. 4 iS an edge elevation of the back, and Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of one of the side members, illustrating the upper rear corner of said side member.

Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the seat member of the chair. This seat member is in the nature of an inverted box. Tacked to the upper rear edge of this seat member as at 6, is an upholstering fabric T which extends over the front edge of the seat portion and is tacked under the lower front edge 8.

The side members 9 and 1() of the chair, carry rockers 11 and 12 and these side members are secured to the box-like seat portion by Screwsl. These side members are covered with an u holstering fabric v15 which is tacked beneat the lower edge of the side members as at 16 and extends over said side members and is tacked as at 17 to said side members at the point of their juncture with the seat portion 5.

The back 18 has offset portions 19 which overlie the upper rear corners of the side members. 'lhese side members are recessed as at 20 (see Fig. 3) and the inner side of said recess is closed by a plate 21 which is secured in position by screws 22. This recess 20 therefore, forms a Socket adapted to receive tenons 23 which are carried by the ofl'set portions 19 of the back 18. This back is covered by an upholstering fabric 24, one end of which is secured beneath the lower rear edge of the back as at 25 and the other end of which is secured to the back at its juncture with the upper rear corner of the seat portion as indicated at 26. The lower ortion of the back is secured by screws or ot er fastening devices 27 to the seat portion 5.

By virtue. of the foregoing construction, it will be seen that the two side members, the seat member and the back member may be separately upholstered before the chair is put together. This is very desirable, for it enables the workmen to handle the parts more readily than would be the case if the chair were upholstered after it had been put together.

In putting this chair together, the two side members are first secured" to the box-like bottom portion. A transverse strip 31 is then secured in position between the two sid'e members. The back is then slipped into such position that the tenons 23 enter the sockets 20 of the side members. A second tenon 30 which is carried by the lower end of the back, enters `a recess formed in the strip 31, the outer edges of the overhanging portions` 19 then lying flush with the outer faces The fastening devices 27 are then placed in position, thereby securely tying all of the parts in position and bringing all of the tacking into Such position that it will not be visible.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and eilcient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are Well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to e understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such 'changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
