CONNECTlNG-ROD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented April 23, 1907.
Application filed April 16, 1906. Serial No. 311,864.
T L2/'Z wiz/0171, it 'lflutylconccrn' Be it known that l, JOHN F. VILLEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of l engines in which one end of the connectingrod is connected directly to the piston and the opposite end of said connecting-rod is connected directly to the wrist-pin. Because one end of connecting-rods now in use upon engines of this character lie Well within the cylinder it has been found to be impossible to tighten the brasses at that end of the connecting-rod Without disconnecting the opposite end of the connecting-rod from the wrist-pin and pulling the piston partly out of the cylinder. It is to obviate this difficulty that the present invention is particularly designed. V
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a connecting-rod constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 designate longitudinally-disposed tubular members, the opposite ends of which are connected by integral heads 7 and 8. The
. numeral 9 designates one of the brasses carried by the connecting-rod, the base of which bears against the head 7. This brass 9 together with the brass 10 are located at the end of the connecting-rod which is connected directly to the piston of a gas or gasolene engine. Brasses 11 and 12, similarly disposed at the opposite end of the connecting-rod, are adapted to engage the wrist-pin of the engine in the usual and well-known manner. For binding all these parts together and to provide means for simultaneously tightening the brasses at both ends of the connectingrod an elongated U-shaped member is provided, This U-shaped member comprises the legs 14 and 15 and the connecting member 16. This connecting member 16 lies in the recessed portion 17 of the brass 10, and the legs 14 and 15 pass through the brassesQ and 10, the tubular members 5 and 6, and the brasses 11 and 12 and are threaded at their outer ends 18 for the reception of nuts 19. It will be readily understood that when these nuts are tightened the brasses located at both ends of the connecting-rod will be simultaneously tightened thereby. The frame formed by the tubular members 5 and 6 and the heads 7 and 8 imparts strength and rigidity to the structure as a whole, while, as has been hereinbefore stated, it is possible by virtue of the construction set forth to quickly and easily adjust the brasses which connectr the connecting-rod to the piston without removing the piston from the cylinder.
While the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but in- `cludes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim isln a device'of the character described, a frame composed of a pair of tubular members which lie side by side, heads at each end of said tubular members formed integral therewith and connecting said members, a pair of brasses located at each end of said frame, a U-shaped member the legs of which pass through all of said brasses and through the tubular members, and nuts threaded upon the ends of said legs, the head of said U-shaped member lying upon the exterior of the outer brass at the opposite end of the connecting-rod from said nuts.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v JOHN F. WILLEKE. `Witnesses:
