To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. OULLING- WORTH, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Engine Cross- Heads, of which the following isa specification.
My invention is generally applicable to engines which have a forked or yoked cross-head and a rod which enters or extends through the fork or yoke in the crOsshead, and is pivotally connected therewith; but the invention more particularly relates to cross heads for aircompressing engineswhich have the steam and pump cylinders arranged in line, and have connecting-rods extending between the ends of the cross-head and the cranks upon the crank-shaft. In such air co mpressing engines the piston-rod is usually made continuous, or is composed of two portions which are connected with ablock in the crosshead, and this block, which forms a part of the piston-rod, is commonly pivoted in the fork or yoke of the cross-head, so as to provide. for a slight swinging of the cross-head relatively to the piston-rod, in order to compensate for any slight difference in the length of the two outside connecting-rods, either when they are first made and adjusted, or after their boxes are tightened up to compensate for wear.
The invention consists, essentially,in the combination, with a yoked or forked crosshead and a rod extending into the yoke or fork, of a tubular wrist-pin in the cross-head, composed of segmental sections inclined lengthwise on their inner faces and an interposed wedge or key adjustable lengthwise between said seotions for the purpose of expanding the pin to compensate for wear, or to produce a snug fit of the pin in the eye of the rod.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a forked or yoked crosshead and a piston-rod extending through the same, of a wrist-pin comprising an adj usting-wedge,oonstructed as above described, and on which the piston-rod is pivoted.
In the above combinations the segmental sections of the wrist-pin are preferably provided at their upper ends with outwardlyprojeoting flanges, which overlap the top of the cross-head and hold the sections stationary in the cross-head, while the taper key or '3 is a transverse section of the cross-head and a longitudinal section of a part of the pistonrod which is in the cross-head, thesame being taken on the plane of the dotted line y y, Fig. 2. Adesignates the cross-head, which has at the outer ends wrists b, to which the ends of the connecting-rods are to be fitted, and which has at the middle of its length a yoke or fork, A. In the yoke or fork A the rod which is connected with the cross-head is pivoted. The piston-rod, which is here represented as pivoted to the cross-head, comprises two portions, 13, which are each secured by a screw-thread and jam-nut, b, to a block, B, which is fitted in the yoke or fork, A, of the cross-head,and which itself forms a component part of the piston-rod. The block B has an eye which receives a wrist-pin, G, fitted in the cross-head,
and this wrist-pin connection of the cross-head and piston-rod provides for a slight swinging of the crosshead relatively to the piston-rod. The wrist-pin is composed of two segmental sections,0,inclined on their inner sides, and a wedge or taper key, D, interposed between them and adjustable lengthwise of the pin by means of a screw-thread and nut, d, or other means, in order to spread the sections 0 and expand the pin. The nut d bears on a washer, d, which overlaps the under side of the crosshead, as shown in Fig. 3, and the segmental sections 0 of the wrist-pin are each provided at the upper end or head with a flange, c, which overlaps the cross head, and prevents it is turned for adjusting the key or wedge D between the sections.

I V 4 What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a yoked or forked 1o cross-head and a rod extending into the yoke or fork, of a wrist-pin in the'cross-head, composed of segmental sections inclined on their inner faces and a wedge or taper key interposed between them and adjustable length-- x 5 wise to spread the sections and expand said pin, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, with ayoked or forked cross-head and a piston-rod extending through the same, of a wrist-pin in the cross head on 20 which the rod is pivoted, and which is composed of segmental sections inclined on their inner faces, and a taper key or wedge interposed between them and adjustable lengthwise to spread the sections and expand the pin, 25 substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with the forked or yoked crosshead and the block B, arranged therein and having the portions of the pistonrod extending from it, of the wrist-pin composed of the segmental sections 0, inclined on 0 their inner faces, and the taper key or wedge D, adjustable lengthwise to spread the sections and expand the pin, substantially as herein described.
4. The combination, with the forked or 3 5 yoked cross-head and the piston-rod extending through the same, of the wrist-pin composed of the segmental sections 0, inclinedon their inner faces and having at their upper end the flanges 0 bearing on the cross-head, 40 and the taper key or wedge D, interposed between the sections and adjustable lengthwise to spread the sections and expand the pin,substantially as herein described.
