MACHINE FOR BALLING YARN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed May 14:, 1906. Serial No- 316,710.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK RUssELL DENISTHORPE, residing at The Friars Mills, Sarah street, and ANDREW CHAMBERS, residing at No. 11 Bismark street, both in the county borough of Leicester, England, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, subjects of His Majesty King Edward the Seventh, have invented new and useful Improvements in or' Relating to Contrivances in Connection with Machines for Balling Yarns, Twine, or theLike, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in contrivances in connection with machines for balling yarns, twine, or the like; and the obiect 0 our improvements are to provide in -Jlf acting ball -winding machines a ballwinding instrument that labels or tickets the ball at each end and makes the ball at one operation. We attain these objects by the aid of the contrivance or instrument illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in wb ch Figure 1 is a view of the double label or ticketing ball-winding instrument in the diagonal position as used in the machine, the bottom of the instrument being screw-threaded to fit upon the rotating spindles of the ma- ..ine. Fig. 2 is a frontal View of the previius ne; and Fig. 3 shows one end of a swinging frame of one form of ball-winding machine, showing the rotating spindle and part of driving-gear.
In self-acting .ball-winding machines the difficulty has been that the labels or tickets could only be introduced or inclosed at the outer end, leaving the inner end bare and showing the tube or cylinder upon which the ball is built or wound. By this our invention any one is enabled to build up or ball yarns, twines, or other like materials used in mendings, knitting, sewing, 'embroidering, and other like purposes, so that both labels or tickets can be inclosed within the ends of the ball at one operation before the ball is removed from the instrument.
We make the metal boss A with the collar or flange (1, said boss being bored right through and screw-threaded, so that it can be screwed onto the nut 'b on the screwed end of the spindle B of any ball-winding machines. The front of the flange a is provided at equal distances with pianoforte or other longer than the winding tube or cylinder E,
which is placed between the two labels d d. (Seen in Fig. 1.) The inner end of the wires or other springs are bent outward at a and at this point are held by the ,plate D in the form of a cross, Fig. 2, or disk, upon the outer face of which, before the winding tube or cylinder E is placed within the wires C, the label or ticket (I is placed with the printed matter downward, the winding tube or cylinder following neXt. Then the other label or ticket (1 is placed on the top of the winding tube or cylinder E. The winding then immediately takes place all along the winding-tube. Each ball can then be drawn off the instrument or dofled, the springs giving way sufficiently at their outer free ends so that the operator can release the ball when it is turned out complete. Said instrument labels or tickets the ball at each end and makes the ball at one operation.
By the aid of the above-mentioned con trivance or instrument we are enabled in selfacting balling-machines to dispense with two motions therein.
We claim- 1. In a self-acting ball-winding machine a rotating spindle having a double label or ticket ball-winding instrument fitted thereto, consisting of a metal boss and flange, the outer face of the latter carrying four wires bent outward and secured at the bond by a late or disk, the outer free ends of the wires orming a spring for inclosing the winding tube or cylinder and holding the labels or tickets, substantially as described.
2. An instrument designed to label or ticket each end of a ball of yarn, twine or the like, and facilitate the making of such ball at one operation, composed of a screwed boss with flange, having four Wires-fitted at equal distances therein, and bent outward carrying a plate upon which the first label or ticket is placed before the winding-tube, the other label or ticket being then put thereon, sub stantially as described.

Correction in Letters Patent No. 850,908.
It is hereby certified that the name of the first-mentioned patentee in Letters Patent No. 850,908, granted April 23, 1907, for an improvement in Machines for Belling Yarn, was erroneously written and printed Frederick Russell Denisthorpe, Whereas said name should have been written and printed Frederick Russell Donisthorpe; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Oflice.
Signed and sealed this 22d day of October, A. D., 1907.
