- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN T. CLAPP AND PHILBURT W. BANCROFTOF GOUVERNEUR, NEW YORK.
DRAWER GUIDE AND SUPPORT FOR KNOCKDOWN FURNITURE.
Patented April 23, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALLEN T. CLAPP and PHILBURT W. BANCROFT, citizens of the United States, residing at Gouverneur, in the county of St. Lawrence, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Drawer Guide and Support for Knockdown Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generallyto bureaus, dressers, and similar articles of furniture in which drawers are employed; and the object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of this kind which can be shipped in knockdown form and which can be quickly and easily set up at its destination.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the various parts that the drawers will slide freely and easily in the casing after it has been set up. As a rule an article of furniture in which one or more drawers are employed require the draw-guides to be so accurately arranged as to preclude making the case as a knockdown case; but by means of our invention we avoid this difficulty and provide the drawer with an adjustable support by means of which accuracy and ease of movement can be had after the case or cabinet has been set up.
With these and certain other objects in view the invention consists in the novel fea tures of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bureau constructed in accordance with our invention, one corner thereof being broken away to disclose the features of our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the guide-rods and one end of the drawer and the adjustable support connected Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a bureau or dresser embodying our invention. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the top, B the back, C the sides, and D the front of thebureau or dresser, said parts being constructed substantially the same as heretofore-that is, each part consists of end posts and panels, said posts being dovetailed or otherwise connected to provide the usual form of case or cabinet.
E indicates the drawers, which are constructed the same as usual and rest at their forward end upon the front rails D, which constitute a part of the front of the bureau. F indicates guide-rods, preferably round in cross-section, said guide-rods being arranged adjacent each end of each drawer and are held between the end posts of the front and back of the bureau or case.
The rear end of each drawer is supported by-means of the supports G and H, said supports being made of wood or metal, as preferred, and are notched at their outer ends, as shown, in order to embrace the guide-rods F. The support G is preferably permanently attached to the end of the drawer by means of screws; but the support H is adjustably connected, so that it can be moved laterally in order to accurately fit the adjacent guide-rod F, and in order to accomplish this adjustment we provide a longitudinal slot E in the back of the drawer adjacent the end, and through it a bolt H is adapted to pass, a
winged nut H being fastened upon the inner end of the bolt. for the purpose of securely connecting the support to the end of the drawer.
It will thus be seen that we provide a novel means for support and guiding the drawer, and it will also be understood that by means of this construction the case or cabinet can be shipped in a knocked down condition and can be quickly and easily set up at its destination and each drawer adjusted with reference to a the guiderods, so as to slide freely and easily within the said case or cabinet.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a case having a drawer, of parallel rods arranged in the case at opposite ends of the drawer, supports secured to the rear side of the drawer and parallel thereto, said supports extending beyond the ends of the drawer and notched at their ends to engage the rods, the rear wall of the drawer being longitudinally slotted, a bolt passing through the slot of the drawer and through the support, and a winged nut arranged on the bolt within the drawer.
