Be it known that I, JOHN E. FOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and tseful Improvement in Vehicle-VVheels; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and i'se the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in vehiele-wheels shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly set forth in the following specification and cl aitiis.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view throz gh a wooden vehicle-hub provided with encircling sheet-metal bands. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one portion of the inner band encircling the hub and through which the spokes project. Fig. 3 is an ele Vation of the two parts composing the inner band, showing the parts assembled. Fig. 4 is an end view of the hub with parts broken away to show the location of the bolts in the spokes, whereby the spokes are secured without being weakened, while the bolts engage the outside bands. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a detail of the hub, showing a variation in the form of the outside bands at the point where they overlap the inner band.

The object of this invention is to provide an inner band capable of inclosing that portion of the hub from which the spokes project, the construction being such that the parts constituting the inner band may be assembled over the hub, after which-the outer bands are forced on from either end, thus completely inclosing the wooden hub and at the same time securing the inner band against displacement.
I have shown in the drawings several modifications in the form of the outer bands at the oint where these parts overlap the inner liand, the object being to present a finished appearance and to overlap the parts in such manner as to guard against the entry of moistit re. 1
Referring to the letters of reference shown in the drawings, A is a wooden hub of a vehicle-wheel, and B are its spokes.
C and O are sleeves or encircling bands of sheet metal, each having an rptiirned flange c, the edge of the i inwardly, as indicated at c.
D is an inner annular channel-band formed in two parts and provided with apertures d for the passage of the spokes, being embraced between the ipstanding flanges c of the outside bands C and O. E are bolts engaging the inner and outer bands. As shown in Fig. 4, the bolts E project through apertures in the spokes at a point whee the opening will not weaken the spoke, the bolts serving also to secure the spokes to the hub.
F are wooden dowel-pins alternating with the bolts E for fastening the spokes to the hub. IVhile a sulficient number of bolts E may be employed to engage all of the spokes, it is not necessary to use this number to bind the outer hands together, hence the employment of the dowel-pins alternately with the bolts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a vehicle-wheel, a hub, an encircling band formed in two parts provided with apertures through which the spokes project,
outside bands with upstanding flanges 10- cated on either side of the fi:st-named band, and means for connecting the upstanding flanges of the outside bands with the firstnalned band, substantially as described.
2. In a vehicle-wheel, an encircling band channel-shaped and formed in two parts, said band provided with apertures through which the spokes project, in combination with outer bands sleeved on the hub, said outer bands provided with upstanding flanges adapted to overlap the walls of the channelshaped flange, and bolts for securing the bandstogether and upon the hub, substantially as described.
3. In a vehicle-wheel, a hub, bands sleeved upon the hub from either end provided with upstanding flanges, a channel-shaped band housed within the upstanding flanges, said channel-shaped band provided with openings through which the spokes of the wheel project, and bolts securing the outer and inner bands and spokes to the hub, substantially as described.
4. In a vehicle-wheel, a hub, a channelshaped band formed in two parts and provided with openings through which the spokes project, encircling bands adapted to ptrrned flange being bent IIO be sleeved upon the hub from either end p1 0- vided With upstanding flanges, said flanges having an inwajdly bent annular rim to p:o ject over band when assembled, and bolts for securing the hands together upon the hub, substantially as desc'ibed.
