ALFRED A. DAY, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
' EYEGLASSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application filed October 3,1906. Serial Nb. 337,208.
of which the following'is a'specification;
The invention relates toeyeglasses, and
has for its purpose or object to provide an eyeglass possessing an improved arrange. ment ofnose-bridge and noseqnece, whereby a very 'simple,econo1nical, secure and-cili- Vith. the foregoing and other ob view the invention consists of the novel construct'io'n', combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth, andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred em bodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resortedto Wliich come Within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail'reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference'characters denote corresponding. parts throughout the severalviews, and .in which- Figure 1 is an elevation'of a part of eyeglasses in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the nose-bridge detached,
, somewhat enlarged. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the nose-bridge, somewhat enlarged. Fig. 4 is a detail showing. one of the nosepieces. Fig. 5'is a view. of one of the nose-pieces carrying a nose-guard, andv Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail showing the manner of securing a nose-bridge and a nose-piece to one of the lenses. 7 Fig. 7 is adetail perspective of the nose-bridge and noseiece.
Re erri'ng to the drawings by reierenc characters, 1 2 denote the-lenses, and 3 the lens-posts, each having a bifurcated end-5 to receive the lens, the latter securedtp the bifurcated end of a post through the medium I of a holdfast device 6. Each of the lensposts at the beginning of the bifurcated end 18 formed with a pair of laterally-extending curvilinear flanges 7, which conforin in contour to the edge of the lens, and interposed between the flanges 7 and the lens is a bowshaped spring-washer 8, of a size substantial y equal to the pair of flanges 7, so-that 1 12 engaging in the post from the rear.
the washer will not project beyond. said flanges, and thus prevent an unsightly a pear- 1 ance.. The spring-washer 8'holds the ens in a rigid manner and minim zes liability of the lens'working loose. It often occurs that the opening through the lens for the holdfast (lee vice 6 is out too near the edge of the lens, and when the lens is mounted it permits of play of the lens, which is very objectionable, as the flanges 7 will not firmly press'against the ,edge' of the lens. If such be the case, the ob: jection is readily overcome by the interposition of the washer 8, the latter taking up and compensating for the play of the lens, and thereby causing the lens to become absolutely rigid relative to its mounting. Each of the lens-posts 3 4 at what may be'termed its inner end is squared, as at 9, with the said squared portion channeled from top to bottom, as .10, so asto provide a pair. of ribs 1 1, between which one end of the nose-bridge and one end of the nose-piece is secured" throughthe medium of the holdfast device The nose-bridge 13 is formed ofa coiled- 8 strip of spring metal, the coil being in'contact or closed against each other, and preferably the, coils overlap, so thatthere will be no} danger whatsoever of the bridge pinching the j flesh of the nose at any time, as owing to the closing or-overlapping of-the coils when'the bridge is bowed the coils will not separate to such an extent that the flesh of the nose can bowed to the'des'ired position and-will, furthermore, comfortably bridge the nose ofthe wearer, yet seat with the 'spring-p-ressureg5 requisite to retain the glasses in position Each end of the bridge 13 is formed with a depending arm 1 1, notched, as at 15. {The arms 14 are positioned in the channels LQZ'and fixedly secured to lens-posts?) 4 by the holdfast devices 12. The notches 15 of the arins 1ft permit of the passage of the holdfast idev oes 12. I
The nose-pieces 16, whichmay or may not be provided with'the guards 1-7, each consists of a piece of spring-Wire bent to form a depending arm' 18, having a -h'ooked-shaped upper end 19, which isadapted' to be seated, between the' ribs 11 and engaged by a hold-- fast device 12 for fixedly securing the nose iio , piece to a lens-post. .The lower end of the with respect to said arms, said depending arm 18 terminates'in a spring-coil 20, which arm having a hooked-shaped upper end.
extends atright angles with respectito said 3. A pair of eyeglasses comprising a pair of- ,avm, 18 ,and terminates in an upwardlv-ex-f lens-posts, a lens secured to each of the posts, tending inverted-U.-shap.ed arm 21,0ne of the a closely-coiled spring member constituting a members thereofpreferably being shorter [nose-bridge and having a notched arm at 1 than the other. The inverted- U shaped arm each end, and a pair of nose-pieces each pro- 21 extends at right angles with respect to the vided with a pair of arms one of which havcoil 20. Owing to the manner in which the ro nose-pieces are set up the maximum of flexibility and resiliency is'obtained so as to afe ford a gentle spring-pressure against the nose pieces in positio v,
. and at the same time firmly engage the nose 4. In an eyeglass a pairof nose-pieces each to assist in maintaining the glasses in posiformed of a depending arm and .an upwardly-v 15 tion in use. extending invgrtd-U-shaped' ar'm,'- and a 50 A lthough the nose-pieces and the nosespring coil connecting the arms together, a bridge are shown-as being formed of three inspring nose-bridge consisting of coiled matedependent elements, yet it is obvious Within rial, and lens-posts to which said nose pieces the scope of my invention they can be formed and bridge are connected. 2c as a unitary strncturewith the nose-pieces as 5-.
