Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
STEWART HOLMES, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
EAGKING.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEWART HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New 'York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Packing, lof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved packing for pistons and the like which is sim le and durable in construction and very e ective in Operation.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this; specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
.Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied to a Asteam-pump piston, parts being shown in section on the line 1 1 O Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a'transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The acking-ring A is loosely fitted on the bodyV of the piston, and the inner vend of the said packin mi@ A abuts against an annular shoulder yfijfiteglral on the body B, andthe outer end o'f t e said acking-ring A is en aged by a washer C, hel in lace by a nut screw' on the outer en of the central piston-r plainly indicated in Fig; '1. he ackin'g-ring dia Ona y-extending wa s beveled and enga d by the sidesof a spreader-bar F,pproffera ly made triangular in cross-section, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, the base of the spreder-bar being engaged and pressed outward by a spring G or a similar means held on a, seat A, formed integrally On the inside of the packing-ring A at the split A.
By reference A is provided with a split A', having its ai rig; 2 it warb@ Seen-nia y the seat A2 is s lit in the direction of the split A', and instea' of the spring G above mentioned liners or like devices may be employd for forcing the spreader-bar' F out ward, with a view to open the split ring A, so as to firmly engage the inner surface of the cylinder in which the piston is used. Now in Specicaton of Letters Patent. Y Application filed January 19,1907. Serial No 353,073.
Patented April 9, 1907.
order to accommodate the seat A2 the body B is iiattened, as at B2, (see Fig. 2,) it being expressly understood that the seat A2 is an integral part of the ring A and supports the spring G or other means for` forcing the spreader-bar F outward.
The packing described is very sim le and durable in construction, can be cheap y manufactured, and readily applied.
By constructing the packing inthe manner above set forth, and shown in the draw' ings, ,it is evident that the Outer surface of the ring snugly fits the inner surface of the cylinder in which the piston is used, the ring being spread apart with suflicient force by the spreader-bar F so as to prevent all leakage from one side of the piston to the other.
The ring A is preferably made Of steel, while the sp`readerbar F is made of softer metal, preferably brass, to revent the outer corner of the s reader-bar om cutting into the surface of t e cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patent 1. A packing for pistons and the like coniprising a ring having a diagonal split, the walls of the split being beveled inwardly and said ring being rovided with an integral seat on the inside o thering at cach side of the split, and extending in the direction of the' the said scat and engaging the base of thc spreader-bar to force the latter Outward.
In testimony whereof I have'signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
