HORSE-RELEASER.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. OAswELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of Phillips, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Releasers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. w

This invention relates to vehicles, and more particularly to means for releasing the horses therefrom, and has for its object to provide a horse-release'r which will be simple and which will be arranged to operate efiiciently.

It is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

In thedrawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the mechanism within the wagonbody. Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 1,

taken longitudinally of one .of the whifiietrees. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view in side elevation of the runner attached to the vehicle-pole.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown the forward portion of a wagon which includes a body 5 and which is provided with a doubletree 6. A metallic plate 7 is bowed upwardly between its ends, as shown at 8, and has its ends secured upon the whiflietree, the plate lying approximately at the center thereof.

Wings 9 are formed integral with the plate 7 and extend upwardly therefrom at opposite sides of its center, and ournaled in the upper ends of these cars there is a horizontal rod 10, connected by means of a universal joint 11 with a rearwardly-extending arm 12, which consists of telescoping members. 13 and 14, respectively. A screw 15 is engaged in the outer member 13 and enters the inner member 14 to hold the members at different points of their telescopic adjustment.

The plate 24 of each whifiietree. has a forwardly-extending finger 26, upon which there is pivoted between its ends a lever 27,

and a strap 28 connects the upper end of this lever with the rod 10 between the ears 9, there being thus two of these straps 28, and they are connected with the rod 10 in such a way that rotation of the rod in one direction will wind both of the straps thereupon.

Each of the swingletrees has engaged in its outer ends the threaded shank 29 of a forwardly-extending ear 30, and engaged with the whiffletrees inwardly of these ears'there are sleeves 31, having forwardly-extending ears 40, which lie parallel with the cars 30. Sleeves 32 are engaged with the ends of the whiflietrees inwardly of and in spaced relation to the sleeves 31 and have forwardlyeXtending ears 33. .The several ears at each end of each whiflletree are provided with alining openings which receive a sliding bolt 34, and these bolts are provided with crosspins 35 between the ears 33 and 40, each of which rests against one end of a helical spring engaged with its bolt and resting at its other end against the ear 33, the springs being arranged to hold the bolt yieldably with their outer end in the openings of the cars 30.

Rods 36 connect the bolts with the levers TOO runner 37 at its forward end, which strikes the ground when the team is released to prevent the pole from digging into the earth.

hat is claimed is J A horse-releaser comprising a whifl'letree, ears having stems engaged in the ends of the whiffletree, sleeves engaged with the ends of the whiflletree inwardly of the ears, ears carried by the sleeves, a trace-engaging bolt e11- gaged in the sleeves at each end of the whiflietree, for movement into and out of operative position, means for holding the bolt yieldably in operative position, a plate secured upon the whiffletree, a finger carried by the plate, a lever pivoted upon the finger, connections between the lever and the bolt for simultaneous movement of the bolt against the action of the spring when the lever is moved, a bracket, a rod journaled in the bracket, connections between the rod and the lever for movement of the latter to move the bolts when the rod is revolved, a longitu- (finally-adjustable arm connected with the rod for rotation thereof, means for holding the arm at different points of its adjustment, an end piece carried by the arm, and a vertically-adjustable support for the arm.
