lMPROVEMENT IN PLOWI NG-HOES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MASON, of Harmony, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Plowing-Hoe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved plowing-hoe. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved plowing-hoe simple in construction, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, easily repaired, and which will do its work well and thoroughly, requiring no plow or cultivator to be previously used; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.

- A andB are two cross bars of unequal length, slotted longitudinally and securely bolted at their middle parts to the ends of the short plank 0. Each of the slotted bars A B may be made in one or more pieces, as may be desired or convenient.

D and E are two bars bolted to each other near their centers, and the upper ends of which are secprely bolted to the longitudinal bar F. The bars D E F form the side frames of the machine, which said side frames are adjustably secured to the bars A and B by bolts passing through the bars F and through the slots of the bars A and B, so that the said side frames may be moved closer together or farther apart, as may be desired. The side frames, D E F, are secured against side strain by the braces G, the lower ends of which are securely bolted to the bars D near their lower ends and their upper ends are adjustably secured to the forward or longer slotted bar, A, by bolts passing through the upper ends of the said braces and through the slot of the said bar A, so that the said bracesG may be adjusted in accordancewith the adjustmentof side frames, D EF.

H is the plow-point, the lower part of which should be made of steel, and which is securely bolted to the forward or lower part of the bar D.

I are the scrapers or hoes, the forward ends of which are securely pivoted to the forward or lower part of the bars D, and to the rear ends of which are pivoted the rear ends of the brace-levers J, by bolts passing through slots in the rear ends of the said scrapers I and through the rear or lower ends of the levers J,

will be raised or lowered, according to the form which it is desired the ridge formed by said scrapers should have.

.K is the tongue, which is hinged to the forward part of the plank O, and the rear end of which passes back through the loop or'keeper L, attached to the rear slotted bar, B. The breadth of the keeper or loop L equals the breadth of the rear end of the tongue K, but the depth of the loop isgreater than the thick ness of the rear end of the tongue, so that the said rear end of the said tongue may be raised or lowered to regulate the depth to which it is desired to have the plows H enter the ground. The rear end of the tongue K is raised and lowered by adjusting the position ofthe wedgeshaped block M, which passes through the loop L beneath the tongue K, with which it is adjustably connected by a setscrew passing through a slot in the said tongue, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tongue K is securely and rigidly held against any side strain by braces N, which are connected with the said tongue K and withv the forward side of the ends of the forward slotted bar, A, as shown in Fig. 1.

P are the draft-hooks, which are securely attached to the end parts of the forward slotted bar, A.

It should be observed that by moving the rear ends of the side frames, D E F, inward until the rear ends of the scrapers I meet the with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3; The combination and arrangement of the hinged tongue K, loop or keeper L, adjustable wed ge-block M, and braces N, with each other and with the frame A B O, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur pose set forth.
