To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SoHoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Photographic- Print-Testing Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide simple and effective means of a novel nature for ascertaining the proper length of time for exposing a negative and developingpaper to the light in order to insure proper exposure and secure the best results, at the same time avoiding the wastage of paper.
Two embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the accompanying drawings, Wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of said embodiments. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a top plan view. Fig. 5 is a horizon tal sectional view. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the carrier, showing the conduit partially in section. Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating the character of the test-print secured. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of another embodiment of the invention, showing the same applied to a printing-frame and Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the same.
Similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in the first six figures of the drawings, a printing-frame is employed that is in the form of a casing, comprising afront shield-plate 10, a rear plate 11, and a web 12, connecting the lower edges of said plates. The rear plate 11 is of less width than the front plate, and hinged to its upper end is a lever 12 A clamping-plate 13 is pivoted upon the upper end of this lever, while the lower end is borne against by a spring 1 1, interposed between said lever and the rear plate 11. The upper margin of the shield-plate is cut away to provide an open portion 15, the edge along said open portion being serrated, forming projections 16. The margin of the plate directly adjacent to said projections is provided with two sets of indicators, one of these sets being preferably Roman numerals, as shown, and being designated by the reference-numeral 17, the other set being fractions 18. The indicators are cut from the plate, and each is associated with one of the projections 16, as will be clear, particularly by reference to Fig. 2. A pintle 19 projects centrally from the front side of the shieldplate 10, and pivoted thereon is a coverplate 20, having a series of spaced tabs 21 along its outer edge. These tabs are so located that they may be moved to positions over either set of indicators, leaving the other set exposed between them, as shown in Fig. 1. One corner of the cover-plate is provided with a slide 22, having a series of numerals 23 cut therefrom, and the shieldplate 10 directly in rear of the slide 22 has an opening 24. The movement of the coverplate 20 upon the shield-plate 10 is limited by a pointer 25, struck from the shield-plate and projecting through a slot 26 in the coverplate. Suitable designations 27 and 28 are located at the ends of the slot, preferably the letters M and S, designating, respectively, minutes and seconds. A carrierdisk 29 is journaled upon the pintle 19 and has an annular seat 30 in its peripheral margin. In this seat is located a circular conduit 31, provided with a restricted portion 32. WVithin this conduit is loosely placed a body of freely-flowing material 33, such as quicksilver. The conduit is held in place on its seat by lips 34, carried by the disk 29 and embracing said conduit. A shutter is movable with the carrier, being frictionally e11- gaged therewith, said shutter being rotatable upon the pintle or spindle 19 and projecting beyond said carrier. It is provided with a handle-knob 36 and is movable across the open portion 15 of the shield-plate. The weight of the shutter is overbalanced by a weight 37, mounted on the carrier. The shutter is adjustable to different positions upon the carrier, and said positions are determined by a pointer 38, carried by the shutter and projecting through a slot 39 formed in the disk. The designations M and S are located at the ends of this slot.
The operation of the structure may be briefly described as follows. If it is desired to determine the proper length of time for exposing a negative, such negative is placed in the holder and a strip of testing-paper is placed behind it, the whole being secured by the clamping-plate 13 and the test-paper being located behind the portion of the negative which is in rear of the open portion 15 of the shield-plate and the sets of designations. Il the negative is a thin one or one that will print rapidly, the cover 20 is adjusted so that the pointer 25 is at the end of the slot 26 having the "8 or second designation thereon, in which case the Roman numerals will be exposed, as shown in Fig. 1. The shutter 35 is also adjusted so that its pointer 38 is at the end of the slot of the carrier-disk having the designation S. The handle 36 is then grasped and given a partial revolution, which will place all the mercury 33 on one side of the constriction 32. The device is then exposed to the light, and as the mercury passes through the constricted portion 32 ol? the conduit the weight 37 will be permitt-ed to act so as to raise the shutter 35 and gradually carry it across the open portion 15 of the shield-plate. The parts are so timed that the shutter will travel to the designation V in live seconds, to X in ten seconds, and soon across the opening. Thus the test-str p behind the negative will be exposed t'orvarying periods of time, and said periods of time will be printed directly thereon after the strip has been developed. Therefore the operator has only to decide which is the proper time in order to secure the desired results. If the negative is a dense one, the shutter 35 is moved so that its pointer 38 is at the opposite end oi the slot, and the cover-plate 20 is moved until the fractional designations are exposed. hen the parts are thus adjusted and. the shutter has been revolved, such shutter will be located at a considerable distance away from the adjacent end 01? he open portion 15 of the shield-plate, this adjustment in the present embodiment being such that it will require one-quarter of a minute before the shutter begins to pass across said open portion. It will thus be evident that dense negatives can be tested in substantially the same manner, and it said negatives are unusually dense the shutter may be turned a number of times. In this latter instance the slide 22 is employed, in which case the number showing the number of revolutions is also printed, as will be apparent.
Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9. This device is intended for application to an ordinary printing-frame, a portion oi such printingframe being shown in Fig. 8 and. designated 40. A hanger-frame 41 is employed and engages over the printing-frame and is suitably secured thereto by any means-as, for in stance, a clamping-screw 42. The front plate 43 of this hanger constitutes a shieldplate and has a lower cut-away portion 44 provided with projections 45. Sets of designations 46 are in this case formed in a cover 47, that is pivotally mounted on the pintle 48, carried by the plate, while the shield has a series of openings 49 in rear of said cover. A
carrier-disk a0 is rotatably mounted on the pintle 4S and has a conduit 51 corresponding to that already described. A shutter 52 is i'rictionally engaged. with and carried by the carrier, being movable across the open portion 44 oi" the shield-plate and. being adjustable on the carrier in the manner already described. In this embodiment of the invention the weight of the shutter carries the same downwardly, and therefore no overbalancing weight is necessary, as in the firstdescribr-id embodiment. It will be evident that this device operates substantially as the first embodiment and no further description thereof believed. to be necessary.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details 01 construction may be resorted. to within the scope oi the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

A photographic testing device of the character described, comprising a shieldplate having an open portion with projections extending into said open portion, indicating characters cut through the plate adjacent to the projections, a shutter rotatably mounted on the plate and movable over the open portion and the characters, and means for limiting the movement of the shutter.
9. A photographic testing device of the character described, comprising a light-shield having a plurality of sets of indicating char acters out through the same, a cover movable to a position over either set of characters, leaving the other set exposed, and a shutter movable over said characters.
10. A photographic testing device of the character described, comprising a shield having an open portion, and a plurality of sets of indicating characters cut through the shield directly adjacent to the open portion, a cover movable to a position over either set of characters, leaving'the other set exposed, and a shutter movably mounted on said shield and movable over the open portion thereof.
11. A photographic testing device of the character described, comprising a shield hav ing an open portion in one margin with pro jections extending into said open portion, and a plurality of sets of characters cut through the shield-plate and associated with the projections, a pintle carried by the shieldplate, a cover movably mounted on said pintle and movable to a position to cover either set of characters, leaving the'other ex posed, a shutter rotatably mounted on the pintle and movable over the open portion of the shield-plate, and means for limiting the speed of the shutter.
12. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield having an open portion to permit the passage of light, of a shutter pivoted on the shield and movable across the open portion.

In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield, of a rotatable shutter mounted thereon, a substantially circular closed conduit movable with the shutter and having a restricted portion, and a body of material loosely located Within the conduit and arranged to flow through the restricted portion thereof.

In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield-plate having an open portion, and a series of characters cut through the plate and adjacent to the open portion, of a rotatable shutter movable across the open portion, a circular conduit rotatable with the shutter and having a restricted portion, and a body of freely-flowing material that is located in the conduit and arranged to pass through the restricted portion thereof.
17. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield having an open portion, of a shutter movable across the open portion, and a carrier on which the shutter is mounted, said shutter being adjustable to different positions on the carrier to vary the time of passa e of said shutter across the open portion.

In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield having an open portion, of a shutter movable across the open portion, a carrier on which the shutter is mounted, and means for effecting a predetermined movement of the carrier, said shutter being adjustable to different positions on the carrier to vary its time of passage across the open portion.
19. In a photograpic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield, of a carrier rotatably mounted thereon, and a shutter movable with the carrier and movable to different positions thereon.
20. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield having a plurality of sets of indicating characters, of a carrier movably mounted on the shield, a shutter movable with the carrier and movable to different positions thereon, and a cover movable to positions over either set of characters.
21. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a shield-plate having an open portion and a plurality of sets of indicating characters cut through the shield-plate and associated with the open portion, of a pintle carried by the shield-plate, a cover mounted on the pintle and having portions movable to positions over either set of characters, a carrier rotatably mounted on the pintle, a substantially circular conduit mounted on the carrier and having a restricted portion, a freelyflowing body of material located Within the conduit, and a shutter carried by the carrier and movable across the open portion of the shield-plate, said shutter being adjustable to different positions on the carrier.
22. In a photographic testing device, of the character described, the combination with. negative and paper holding me ans having an open portion to permit the passage of light through the negative to the paper held thereby, ot a shutter movable across said portion.
23. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with negative and paper holding means, including a shield having an open portion, and a clamp associated with the shield, of a shutter movable across the open portion.
24. In a photographic testing device of the character described, thev combination with a negative and paper holding device including a shield-plate having an open. portion, and a clamp-plate movable toward and from the shieldplate, said shield-plate having indicating characters, of a rotatable carrier journaled on the shield-plate and having a circular conduit provided with a contracted portion, freely-flowing material located in the conduit, and a shutter mounted on the car rier and movable across the open portion of the shield-plate.
25. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with means for admitting light through a photographic negative, of a shutter movable across the same, and means for indicating the time occupied by the shutter in reaching different points in its path of movement.

In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a light-shield having a portion that admits light to a photographic negative placed behind the shield, of a shutter movable across said portion, and means for indicating on the print, the time occupied by the shutter in reaching dii'l'erent points in its path of movement across said portion.
27 In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with means for admitting light through a photographic negative, of a shutter movable across the same, and means for limiting the speed of the shutter in its said movement.
28. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a light-shield having a portion that admits light to a photographic negative placed behind the shield, of a shutter movable across said portion, and means for limiting the shutter to a predetermined speed in its passage across said portion.
29. In a photographic testing device of the character described, the combination with a light-shield having an open portion that permits the passage of light to a negative placed behind said. shield, and also having a series of indicating characters associated with the open portion comprising a stencil that permits the passage of light, and a shutter movable across the open portion.
